Picture this: You're 51 years old, and instead of slowing down, you become a professional jazz artist, embracing the imperfections that once held you back. Or you left a career in academia, became a chaplain, then an emotional intelligence coach and energy healer. Those are the stories of Elvira V. Hopper and Jami Carlacio, respectively. In this episode, Elvira shares how she transformed her life by letting go of perfectionism. Leaving behind two successful but unfulfilling careers, she embraced her inner jazz artist to become a beacon of authenticity and inspiration. Together, Elvira and I uncover how trauma and our pursuit of perfection can stifle our potential, and how releasing these pressures can lead us to our true purpose.

Elvira and I delve into the power of vulnerability and authenticity, sharing candid personal stories that illuminate the path from perceived inadequacies to genuine connection and growth. We recount transformative experiences, including a life-altering retreat in Tuscany that taught Elvira the value of being open and real and learning to embrace a major mistake and see its value, which reverberated beyond the Italian countryside. Through our conversation, we illustrate how adversity can be a powerful catalyst for personal development, allowing us to better support and uplift those around us.

As we wrap up, we celebrate the joy and wisdom that come from embracing our flaws. Our conversation radiates with positivity and emotional intelligence. We encourage you to silence negative self-talk and embrace your journey with love and gratitude. This heartfelt episode is a reminder to live authentically and joyfully. From Inner Critic to Inner Ally: Enhancing Emotional Intelligence

How do the words we use shape our emotions, beliefs, and behaviors? Join Ruth Lamberti , founding coach of Adult Prep, and me as we discuss the transformative power of language on our emotional and positive intelligence. We dive into the concept of the inner critic or "Judge," explaining how this negative voice can distort our self-perceptions and affect our everyday interactions. To develop our emotional intelligence, we cultivate the key skills of self-awareness and kindness, and we learn to maintain a positive internal dialogue to enhance emotional well-being and foster healthier relationships. And when it comes to our saboteurs, we are encouraged to acknowledge them--they're here and aren't going away anytime soon--but we can befriend them, thank them for the information they provide for us, and ignore the negative messages that can derail our serenity and take us down the rabbit hole of self-loathing and despair. In short, we provide practical strategies for managing our inner critic and cultivating empathy and compassion toward ourselves.

Some other key takeaways from this episode include practicing respect for others and keeping kindness in the forefront of our minds. For example, Jami recounts how she was going to be late to a dance lesson and by making a simple phone call, her stress level diminished and her dance instructor appreciated the heads-up, all of which emphasizes the importance of clear communication and courtesy. Instead of allowing her "stickler" perfectionist take over, she accepted responsibility for being late and practiced a little self-forgiveness. After all, we are perfectly imperfectly humans! Speaking of dance, we explore the joy of dance as a powerful form of self-care! This episode is packed with actionable advice for anyone looking to improve their emotional intelligence and live a more intentional, value-based life. And it starts with the words we use—the way we talk to ourselves and the way we speak to others. Language matters.

  • I'd love to hear from you!

Imagine a world where we all use our emotional, positive, and spiritual intelligences to create the life we would all like to live. In this episode of Emotional Intelligence: Your
Greatest Asset and Key to Success, I explore how understanding and integrating these three types of intelligence can help you become a happier person, a more effective leader, and a person who has so much good to contribute to the world.

If you've been paying any attention to the trends in "intelligence" lately, you'll know that smarts and college degrees and such just aren't "all that" anymore. People who possess the big three, as I call them--EQ, PQ, and SQ--have demonstrated that they are better leaders, more resilient, and frankly, the kind of people that others want to be around. And guess what? We can *learn* these skills just as we would any other kind of intelligence. Sure, there is aptitude, but the truth of the matter is that if we want to become better people, we need to be self-aware, intuitive, and guided by the Source within us that is love, goodness, and compassion. Most, if not all people say that they want their lives to *mean* something. We seek connection, meaning, truth. Spiritual Intelligence gives us that.

I also discuss the ten saboteurs that might be silently undermining your potential, from the harsh inner judge to the relentless people pleaser. Learn practical strategies to counter these negative forces by shifting to your brain's sage mode, where empathy, curiosity, and positive action reside, along with that still small voice that guides you to a path of wholeness, love, and self-compassion. As we examine the growing trend of people identifying as spiritual but not religious, you'll see how spiritual intelligence can guide you toward a more authentic life. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insights into developing these vital intelligences—emotional, positive, and spiritual—to enhance your everyday interactions and overall fulfillment. Engage with our community by sharing your thoughts, and join me at the PQ Gym for ongoing support and enriching insights.

Join us as we unpack this crucial topic with Dr. Margaret Barrow, a seasoned professor, author, and small business owner. How does our society’s definition of happiness fall short of what truly fulfills us? Join me for a thought-provoking conversation with Julie Cowles, a former therapist who has transitioned into a spiritual life coach. Inspired by Stephanie Harrison's "The New Happy," we dissect how cultural conditioning and individualism contribute to our feelings of dissatisfaction and emphasize the essential role of building relationships and tapping into inner wisdom to find genuine happiness.

Is happiness something you have to chase, or might it already be within you? We explore the idea that happiness resides in the present moment. Julie and I break down the foundations of true happiness—self-love, self-acceptance, and self-compassion. Through mindfulness, you can capture the small moments of joy in everyday life. We also touch on recognizing your personal values, setting boundaries, and overcoming the inner critic.

This episode underscores the power of community, generosity, and forgiveness as essential components of personal happiness. We shed light on the societal reluctance to ask for help and reframe it as an enriching opportunity for all involved. We also touch on the importance of grounding yourself in nature to achieve a state of calm. We wrap up with a powerful message of love and gratitude, encouraging you to connect with your inherent love to experience the joy of life. Join us for an enriching episode that promises to change the way you think about happiness.

“Self love is all you need to be happy. Imagine how amazing your life would be if you created an internal world in which you were always good enough, always wanted, always welcome, no matter what others are doing or saying on the outside. A world in which you allowed yourself to make mistakes without shaming you. A world in which you weren’t responsible for everybody else’s wants and needs and feelings. . . . A world in which you were always allowed to love and forgive yourself and offer yourself compassion no matter how badly you messed up. A world in which you saw every difficulty as a learning experience. A world in which it was okay for you to say no, to set boundaries, to have your own preferences, your own values, your own priorities. . . . A world in which you took time and space for yourself to dream, to connect with others with similar interests and values. . . . A world in which you felt safe enough to be authentic, to be vulnerable and ask for help. To just be you." - Julie Cowles

  • I'd love to hear from you!

Do you ever feel like an impostor among your colleagues and peers? Do you wonder whether your degree, qualifications, and experience are just “not enough” to achieve the success you want? In Episode 17, host Jami Carlacio and guest Siobhán (“Shivaun”) Murphy discuss the concept of imposter syndrome, that nagging feeling of being a fraud despite your accomplishments. We explore how this phenomenon disproportionately affects high-achieving women, leading to self-doubt, anxiety, and a reluctance to take on new challenges.

Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern where individuals believe they are overhyped and their success is due to luck or external factors, not their own competence. This can manifest in various ways, from downplaying achievements to attributing positive feedback to mere politeness.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a powerful weapon against imposter syndrome. Drawing on the power of your Inner Sage, you can challenge negative self-talk, build confidence in your abilities, and conquer this pesky problem. The long and short of it is, YOU BELONG! You come to embrace and believe in the value you bring to your peers, colleagues, and everyone else where you feel the need to perform at your best. EQ empowers you to silence the imposter voice within and embrace your rightful place as the awesome, amazing, talented, and accomplished person you are. Believe it.
