  • Welcome back everyone it's Joe Hotai and Brian Osman Co-founders of Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast!

With a New addition to the team Mr Richard Fallow (Video editor/Producer/Good Dude).  Going forward we'll be looking to improve our visual and audio content with Richards help, so please bear with us.   In this episode Joe speaks with Phil 'Hoki' Hokianga Former New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS) Operator & Leader / Company Director about a number of topics including:

Phil's desire to serve in the military and the SAS, some of his upbringing, his strong whanau (family) heritage in the defence force, some of his regrets, challenges, learnings, observations, guidance and counsel to/for others, his acknowledgement/recognition and thanks for those who laid the foundations for the NZSAS unit in particular, his transition into the civilian sector, becoming a company director of  @Vertical Horizonz New Zealand   - his love for his wife and children, his battle with prostate cancer plus so much more.

Sadly, but gratefully for me, this was a one and done opportunity for me to have Phil on the podcast - His decision which he made very clear, and which I was eager to grab with both hands. Phil, is a very intelligent, reserved & humble man. I've wanted to have him on the podcast for a long time. Extremely grateful that he decided to take me up on the open invitation.

Phil was one of those Men you just didn't muck around with in the unit. I remember seeing him during my selection and his name being mentioned in 'hushed' tones by some of the senior soldiers on my selection. I could tell just from his presence and the way he carried himself he was someone who commanded and had the respect of those around him.  What privilege this was for me to share some time and space with this incredible Man.

On behalf of Brian, Richard & myself we appreciate you stopping by and giving us some of your valuable time. We sincerely hope and trust that you will find value in this episode leveraging the lived experiences of our special guest today Mr Phil Hokianga or Hoki to those who know him best.  Please be sure to leave us your comments, questions or suggestions that you'd like us to know about.

  • Welcome back everyone it's Joe Hotai and Brian Osman Co-founders of Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast! And in this episode Joe has the opportunity to speak with Gregg 'Pup' Johnson. Former NZSAS Operator/Team Commander. As part of the "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins"  My co-host/co-founder Brian couldn't make it today, but we didn't let that hold us back.  During this conversation Pup speaks openly about some of his fears/concerns that were holding him back from applying to do the NZSAS selection in the first place.  The catalyst which helped him follow through and ultimately apply. He speaks honestly about his decision to voluntarily withdraw from the British SAS selection course. Working in the private security sector, going back to the NZSAS and deploying on a number of operations whilst back in the unit.  He shares some hardcase (funny) stories in typical Kiwi fashion and highlights some of the other SF units comments around "if it isn't nailed down the Kiwi's will take it" 😂.

Pup speaks about his transition journey, going back to school, going back to the infantry battalion and working in the training wing/department and his passion for helping veterans and others who may be struggling and needing help.  He shares some heart warming stories about Dougie Grant and John McNut - 2 former NZSAS Operators who were/are still to this day "Highly Regarded, Respected and Missed" by ALL who knew these incredible Men.  Disclaimer: He mentions a few well known characters within the unit either by first name ONLY or by INITIALS. Where possible I've tried to mute out those names and/or initials - however, I may have missed some at different points as I wasn't taking notes of when that happened.  That aside I hope you enjoy hearing Pup speak about some of his journey and that if possible, you're able to take something positive away from it which might help you on your path.

Pup has a genuine respect and love for the unit and his desire is that hopefully through sharing some of his experiences (where he can) on a podcast like this, might help inspire the next generation of operators seeking to serve in the SAS.

  • WDW | With Tracy Cooper | Police Officer | S&C Coach | Loving Wife & Mum. What a privilege to reconnect, with this incredible, highly capable and inspiring Woman.

Wife of Former Australian SAS Operator/Team Commander and previous guest on this podcast EP51 - Dan Cooper. Director and founder of https://komanchi.com.au/

During this conversation with Tracy, we spoke about a number of things including:

How her and her husband (Dan) made their marriage work.

    How they met.

How Dan proposed to Tracy - He's definitely set the bar high for other operators. Who said SAS operators aren't romantic 😆

Tracy speaks about how she managed her worries and concerns and provides her tips for other partners who may be in the same situation.  She shares how she kept herself busy and focused especially when feeling isolated and alone.

I get to find out more about Tracy's background and her love of children. Tracy is asked what advice she would give to operators when it comes to considering their significant other....And then she's also asked what advice she would give to significant others whose partners are operators in the unit.

She talks about her journey and passion for health and fitness.

Starting a successful business - some of the challenges faced during those stages.

Wondering if she would ever have children of her own due to the nature of her husbands work at the time.

Tracy graciously shares her thoughts, insights and perspectives on the role reversal which they as a family now find themselves in, with her being in a more tactical role in the early stages of her Police career and her husband being at home and looking after the kids while running his business and continuing his study. Plus a bunch of other discussion points in between.

Tracy is fantastic! And I know you'll gain a lot from her down to earth, easy going, family focused and service approach to others as you hear what she has to say.

We appreciate you stopping by and giving us some of your valuable time. We sincerely hope and trust that you will find value in this episode leveraging the lived experiences of our special guest today.

This conversation took place at the end of a beautiful day in Whakatāne New Zealand at Willie Apiata VC's home. We spoke about Anzac Day with Willie and some of his Bro's.  We particularly spoke about the events from the Day - Saturday 23rd April 2022. The day before (22nd April) Willie Apiata VC contacted some of his Brothers and invited them to join him in getting out in the community and handing out some poppies in preparation for ANZAC Day.  ALL accepted - Hopefully this conversation helps you get a bit more of an understanding of what drives Willie to do what he does, and at the same time get a bit of an insight into some of the relationships and bonds that connect servicemen and Women and their families, regardless of where they served and/or for how long.  We have a bit of a laugh at each other expense - but to be honest the biggest laughs were had when I didn't have the camera rolling.  Kia ora Willie, Willie's Son Barton, (Willie's Mum - Mum), Hayley and her Mum, Karl or Carl 😂 Sorry bro didn't ask you how you spell your name, Aaron, and Mac.  Also BIG Thank you to the Whakatāne RSA and to the incredible and generous people of Whakatāne. Your support and generosity was simply amazing to behold.  Special thank you to Nikolao, Dion, Todd and Allan for their brief and personal messages on what Anzac Day means to them. We thank you so much for doing that. Next year we'll look to give more notice. 💯 👊   Much love and respect to ALL who are currently serving and your families - Thank you Likewise to those who have served and your families for supporting you to be able to serve.  Thank you to all those who are preparing to serve 🙏   They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.  Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,  We will remember them We will remember them.    E kore rātou e kaumātuatia, Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei. LEST WE FORGET!  Apologies - We couldn't use "The Last Post" without breeching copyright.

It's well overdue primarily because both Brian and I being time poor and myself personally lacking confidence in my ability to learn some of this stuff.  Sorry I got excited when I learned a couple of new things lol - that's why the bits at the start of the video. It's probably normal to those who know how to do this sort of animation stuff - but it was a HUGE achievement for me 😂 😂   But, I just needed to push that to the side and punch on and get amongst it.  This video is purely to express our thanks and appreciation to all of those who have been kind enough to support us through your comments, messages, emails and calls. THANK YOU ALL.  We've said all along that we'll get better and we will continue to try and do that. Thank you for your patience with us to date - standby, we're just getting started.  Apologies for missing all the other messages that have been sent - I just didn't have time to take and download all the screen shots, edit the relevant and then compile everything - so I just grabbed literally a handful and tried to create something that is hopefully semi-ok.  Appreciate you ALL,  Joe & Brian Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Co-Founders  WDW!

  • In this episode Joe had the privilege of connecting with and having a conversation with Anthony Gadenne (aka Gads). A former member of the Australian Special Air Service who has turned his passion of serving others through his military service and actions in to becoming a practicing Medical Doctor.

We invite you to tune in to this conversation and have a listen to Gads as he speaks about some of his experiences during selection, cycle while serving as an operator and life after the Regiment. Along the way he provides some great advice to not only potential aspiring SAS applicants, but the information he shares is applicable and helpful for anyone.

We have no doubt Gads' comments, thoughts, messages (spoken and unspoken) will resonate with many regardless of your profession, experience and/or aspirations.

Thank you Gads for your service / continued service, and for taking the time to share a bit about yourself. We know and appreciate that it's not a common thing for people like yourself who have served in these types of units, which makes us even more grateful that you would take the time to come on our podcast in the hopes of helping someone else out there who might need to hear what you have to say.

    Cheers Mate

  • This is part 2 of the conversation with Philip 'A cheeky Samoan lad' Taulelei. A former Australian Special Air Service Operator and Current Security Risk Specialist.

Check out part 1 first if you haven't listened to that yet.

Philip joined 6 Field Squadron (TF) Royal New Zealand Engineers before heading over to Australia and joining 3RAR (Parachute Regiment). He was then posted to the Australian Parachute Training School before he submitted his application to do selection for the Australian Special Air Service Regiment.

There was far too much information to delve into during our brief time together - so we'll connect with Philip again later in 2022. In the meantime we've broken this conversation up into 2 parts purely because of the amount of information to try and take in and digest.

Rather than waffle in this write up - we'll leave it to you to have a listen and take away those things that you, we hope you enjoy part 2.

  • In this solo update you unfortunately only have myself as Brian is busy with work.

In this quick update I talk about some of our guests prior to and post Christmas and those who have been on so far in this New Year.  I speak about our intentions to try and shorten our episodes to 1hr max (Wish us luck 😂 ).

I speak briefly to one of the points which Bill Bestic spoke about in my conversation with him to try and put another lens on a topic that has generated a fair bit of feedback and conversation with former members.

I mention our upcoming guests on the podcast and also update you on my comments to my co-founding partner Brian Osman lol.

Finally, I mention our focus to keep thrashing and inviting our former Kiwi SAS members to come on the podcast. It's slow going in that department and will probably stay that way - but all good, we respect their decisions and reasons.

We're gonna keep going regardless. :-)  I also managed to stay within the 30-40min window which I had told myself I would try to do. Yes!

Stay awesome, Keep Smashing & Thrashing - hopefully you get something out of this and we'll see you next week.
