STORY 1: Gwinnett preparing to open Eastern Regional Greenway Trail

Residents of eastern Gwinnett County are anticipating the opening of the Eastern Regional Greenway Trail, part of a larger infrastructure project. Scheduled for a July 22 ceremony, the initial 5.25-mile segment will stretch from the Harbins Road trailhead under State Route 316. The remainder of the trail, still under construction, will open later this summer. Designed to enhance the Rowen "knowledge community" development, the trail will feature boardwalks, bridges, and a paved path, with amenities like a pavilion, play area, and parking. Costing $19 million, the project is a collaboration between Gwinnett County’s Community Services and Water Resources departments, funded by special purpose local option sales tax revenue.

STORY 2: Brookwood student who battles childhood cancer now running strong

Jackson Fenchak, a rising junior at Brookwood High School, achieved a significant milestone by winning his age group at the Lauren’s Run 5K, completing the race in 23 minutes and 45 seconds. This victory holds special meaning as Jackson battled Stage IV neuroblastoma as an infant and later overcame congenital vertical talus. Supported by CURE Childhood Cancer throughout his journey, Jackson's family now gives back by raising funds and participating in events. Despite challenges, including multiple surgeries, Jackson excels in cross country, track, and wrestling. He approaches each day with gratitude, seeing every opportunity to compete as a gift.

STORY 3: A Duluth Man Drowned in South Carolina Last Week

Last week, 61-year-old Duluth resident Kemal Alic tragically drowned in the Atlantic Ocean near Myrtle Beach, according to reports from South Carolina. The Horry County Coroner’s Office determined Alic’s death was due to drowning, with asphyxiation cited just before 1 p.m. on July 3. Alic, a Bosnian war veteran who had resettled in the U.S., leaves behind a wife and three children. A GoFundMe campaign started by his friend, Hardit Singh, aims to support Alic's family during this difficult time, highlighting Alic’s dedication as a hard worker and his pursuit of opportunities in America. The campaign has raised $1,721 of its $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.

Lawrenceville police issued a warning about a scam involving fraudulent calls where the caller claims to be a police officer. The scammer demands money, typically in the form of gift cards, to resolve fictitious warrants or legal issues. The police emphasize that they never solicit payments over the phone for warrants, citations, or any violations. They also caution residents about spoofing, where scammers manipulate caller ID to appear as if calling from the Lawrenceville Police Department. Residents are urged to verify suspicious calls by contacting the police directly at 770-962-4173 and to inform friends and family, especially the elderly, about this scam.

The operator deemed at fault fled the scene and remains at large. The second incident occurred at Burton Mill Park, involving a person jumping into shallow water from a vessel, resulting in a fractured rib and hospitalization. Inspired by her youngest daughter’s fascination with pears, Marshall found her new path after observing Klaire's innocent curiosity at the breakfast table. The book blends simple storytelling with poetic elements to engage young readers effectively. Marshall's future projects include books featuring her other children, such as "Malcolm the Astronaut" and "Shylah Plays the Trombone", each tailored to their unique interests. Police say Road rage led to shooting near Lawrenceville Square Body of missing Gwinnett County man found in truck, police investigating Buford Lineman Marcus Major to Play for Air Force

All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe!

    Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Police: Road rage led to shooting near Lawrenceville Square

Yaqarah Bennett, a 26-year-old Lawrenceville woman, is facing serious charges, including aggravated assault, after allegedly shooting a 28-year-old man in a road rage incident near Lawrenceville Square. The victim was struck in the knee by a bullet while sitting in his vehicle at an intersection on June 27. Police swiftly secured the scene, recovered shell casings, and identified Bennett based on the victim’s description and specific tattoo markings. She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime, and cruelty to children in the 2nd Degree. The motive remains undisclosed, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lawrenceville Police.

STORY 2: Body of missing Gwinnett County man found in truck, police investigating

Gwinnett County police are investigating the death of Guadalupe Garcia Rodriguez, a 40-year-old Lawrenceville man reported missing by his wife on July 1st. Rodriguez was found deceased inside his truck early Wednesday morning in the 200 block of Paden Cove Trail. His wife had last seen him leaving in his truck earlier that day, and he did not return home. Authorities suspect foul play and are treating the case as a homicide, working to determine the circumstances leading to Rodriguez's death. The motive behind the incident remains unknown. Anyone with information is urged to contact Gwinnett County Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

STORY 3: Buford Lineman Marcus Major to Play for Air Force

Marcus Major, a rising senior from Buford and previously Central Gwinnett, recently committed to the United States Air Force Academy football program. As an offensive lineman, Major stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 305 pounds.

STORY 4: New warrant reveals dolly, gardening tools seized from home where Gwinnett teen vanished

A new warrant reveals several items were seized from the home of missing 16-year-old Asata Amun in Gwinnett County. Asata was last seen on a doorbell camera in February. Her father, Kwabena Amun, has been uncooperative and is accused of abusing his children. Detectives seized a dolly, gardening tools, shoes, and his SUV, suspecting child cruelty. Asata’s mother, Jasmine Dominique, finds the warrant's contents disturbing and believes Kwabena is hiding something. Kwabena denies abuse claims. Police are still searching for Asata, but Kwabena has not been named a suspect or person of interest.

STORY 5: The color of their swimsuit could save your child’s life

Before hitting the beach or pool, it's crucial to prioritize water safety, especially for children. One widely discussed tip is the "swimsuit color rule," emphasizing the importance of brightly colored swimsuits, particularly neon shades. These colors make individuals much easier to spot underwater, potentially preventing drownings which tragically remain the leading cause of death for children under 4, as per the CDC. Water can distort perception, making it crucial to avoid mistaking people for other objects. Organizations like ALIVE Solutions underscore the need for highly visible swimwear to ensure swift identification in emergencies. Alongside this rule, other precautions, including close supervision and basic water safety education, are essential for a safer day by the water.

    Break 3: INGLES 2

STORY 6: What’s filming in Georgia July 2024?

Recently, several major productions wrapped up filming, including "Fight Night" with Kevin Hart and Samuel L. Jackson for Peacock, J.J. Abrams' "Flowervale Street" featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, and a reboot of "Naked Gun" starring Liam Neeson. Also completed were Kevin Bacon's Amazon series "The Bondsman," David Corenswet's "Superman" movie, season four of Netflix's "Sweet Magnolias," and the final season of "Cobra Kai." Currently, few notable projects have begun production since late May, including reality shows, independent films, and unannounced series like "She the People" on Netflix and "G.R.I.T.S." for ALLBLK. The Georgia film office lists active productions, often under pseudonyms like "Cedar Lodge" for "Stranger Things" and "Oops All Berries" for the Disney film "Thunderbolts."

STORY 7: LAKO: Smart financial moves: Managing children’s earnings and inheritance

When children earn money, whether through chores, jobs, or other means like acting or modeling, parents often manage it until the child reaches adulthood, typically 18 or 21. Banks may allow minors to have accounts with adult cosigners, but custodial accounts are necessary for owning stocks or mutual funds. A custodial Roth IRA is a smart investment option for children with earned income, capped at $7,000 annually or 100% of earnings, whichever is less. Parents often start with savings accounts, potentially growing into substantial investments like CDs or mutual funds by the child's teenage years. Transferring funds to a 529 Plan for education or a Roth IRA for retirement can optimize long-term financial growth, ensuring tax benefits and strategic asset management. Seeking advice from a financial advisor can help parents navigate these decisions and secure their child’s financial future responsibly.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.

Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on buy one get one free.

    Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Police: Pair of women went on shoplifting spree at Mall of Georgia

Two women from southeast Georgia, Nakenda Janea Thompson Fevrier of Pooler and Shacarrie Deasia Heyward of Savannah, are facing a total of 54 charges for allegedly stealing approximately $8,000 worth of merchandise from nine stores at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. The incident occurred on June 22, when they were caught attempting to steal large quantities of items from Dick’s Sporting Goods. They fled on foot, leaving behind their vehicle, which was subsequently searched under a warrant, revealing six large trash bags filled with stolen goods from multiple stores. Charges against each woman include felony theft, possession of tools for a crime, loitering, and misdemeanor shoplifting. Police are seeking information on their whereabouts and urge anyone with details to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a potential reward.

STORY 2: Trump seeks to toss NY felony conviction after immunity win

Former President Donald Trump is seeking to overturn his New York hush money conviction following a Supreme Court ruling that grants substantial immunity to presidents for actions taken while in office. Trump's lawyers are preparing to request that a New York judge set aside the jury's verdict against him and are proposing to delay his July 11 sentencing to allow for briefing and arguments. The Supreme Court's 6-3 decision overturned lower court rulings that rejected Trump's claim of absolute immunity for federal charges related to efforts to influence the 2020 election results. The case revolves around payments made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, with Trump arguing that these actions were related to his official duties.

STORY 3: Girls Tennis Player of the Year: Wesleyan’s Sophie Gibbs

Sophie Gibbs and the Wesleyan girls tennis team celebrated their third consecutive state championship, capping an undefeated season with a 20-0 record. Gibbs, who played No. 1 singles, led the team with a 17-3 personal record and reflected on her final season with nostalgia and pride, noting the bonds formed and the achievements shared with her teammates. Her success on the court earned her recognition as the Gwinnett Daily Post’s Girls Tennis Player of the Year. Looking ahead, Gibbs will continue her tennis career at Berry College, motivated by her love for the sport and the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at Wesleyan.

STORY 4: Peachtree Ridge’s Bryson Lawston Commits to Central Georgia Tech

Bryson Lawston, a recent graduate of Peachtree Ridge High School in 2024, announced his commitment to the Central Georgia Technical College football program. A formidable defensive lineman standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 248 pounds, Lawston played a crucial role for his high school team, the Lions, during their state playoff run. In his senior year, he recorded impressive stats with 50 tackles, including 31 solo tackles and 12 tackles for loss, along with two sacks.

STORY 5: Where will Atlanta Braves turn for help at the trade deadline?

As the first half of the season wraps up, the Atlanta Braves are facing critical roster decisions ahead of Major League Baseball’s July 30 trade deadline. With injuries depleting their outfield, including losing Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II, newcomer Jarred Kelenic has stepped up admirably, batting .328 since taking over the leadoff spot. Meanwhile, veteran Adam Duvall has struggled with a .169 average against right-handed pitchers, despite his strong history against lefties. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos, known for pivotal moves in 2021, seeks to bolster the team’s outfield depth amid competitive wildcard standings across both leagues, potentially complicating trade negotiations.

STORY 4: Georgia Gwinnett College’s FAFSA center now open through Aug. 1

Georgia Gwinnett College's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Center will extend its operations until August 1 due to high demand. Since its launch in late April, the center, located conveniently on campus, has assisted over 400 students with their FAFSA applications. The FAFSA is crucial for determining federal aid eligibility, though the streamlined form introduced by the U.S. Department of Education in late 2023 has posed challenges. Kimberly Jordan, GGC's Executive Director of Financial Aid Services, highlighted the center's role not only in aiding applications but also in providing personalized support to students. The center remains committed to helping students start or continue their academic journey smoothly.

STORY 5: One Man’s Efforts to Stop Mulberry Cityhood Continues. What We Know.

Stephen Hughes, an eastern Gwinnett resident, has filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia in Fulton County Superior Court, challenging the constitutionality of legislation that established the city of Mulberry and scheduled its city council elections. This marks Hughes' third active lawsuit related to Mulberry's cityhood. His attorney, Allen Lightcap, argues that Senate Bill 333, which crafted Mulberry's charter and set the cityhood referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. Hughes seeks declaratory and injunctive relief to halt the city council elections and prevent Governor Kemp from participating in any city transition. The core of Hughes' legal challenge focuses on provisions preventing Mulberry from levying property taxes and mandating specific municipal services, which he contends should be addressed through general legislation, not local mandates. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood assert these lawsuits are backed by developers opposing urban growth initiatives, following voter approval of the city in response to local development proposals.

STORY 6: Community Fundraisers for New O’Kelly Memorial Library in Loganville

The Friends of the O’Kelly Memorial Library group is actively fundraising to support the construction of a new library facility in Loganville, planned by the Azalea Regional Library System. With contributions from the state, Walton County, and Loganville totaling $5.7 million, the Friends group aims to raise an additional $2 million. This ambitious goal is crucial as the current library, recognized as Georgia’s Library of the Year in 2021, has outgrown its 6,700-square-foot space. Challenges include insufficient room for programs and events, underscoring the need for the planned 12,000-square-foot facility which promises expanded services and community engagement opportunities. The Friends group recently received a $10,000 donation from Peach State Federal Credit Union, boosting their efforts towards this transformative project for Loganville.

STORY 7: Supreme Court grants Trump partial immunity in Jan. 6 case

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, granted former President Trump significant immunity from criminal charges related to his actions during his presidency, effectively derailing a trial linked to the January 6 attack. While rejecting absolute immunity, the Court ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official acts performed while in office. This decision sends the case back to lower courts and likely postpones any trial until after the November election, where Trump hopes to regain the presidency. Critics argue this delay hampers accountability, while Trump continues to face legal battles in multiple jurisdictions, including delays in Georgia and a pending sentencing in a separate case related to hush money payments.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.

STORY 1: Gwinnett police: People in moving van were not trafficking victims

A viral video on social media this week showed people inside a Budget Rental moving van, sparking concerns of human trafficking as the original poster claimed they were tied up. The incident occurred on Interstate 85 north from midtown Atlanta until Gwinnett police intervened. However, Gwinnett County Police Sergeant Collin Flynn clarified that the individuals were not trafficking victims but were two families relocating with their belongings. They were healthy and not in distress, heading from Alabama to Maryland for new job opportunities. Despite no evidence of trafficking, police cited the driver for Georgia's seat belt law violation as the occupants were riding in the van without seat belts. The group was safely dropped off to find an alternate means to continue their journey to Maryland.

STORY 2: Ousted Gwinnett School Board Member Criticizes Runoff System

Karen Watkins, Vice Chairman of the Gwinnett County school board, has decided not to seek a recount after narrowly losing to Rachel Stone in last week's runoff election. Stone won by 17 votes, securing less than a 0.5% margin over Watkins. Although Watkins could have requested a recount under state law, she opted not to, criticizing Georgia's runoff election system instead. Watkins highlighted concerns that requiring candidates to surpass 50% of the vote in a runoff can suppress voter turnout and dilute the impact of voters. In the primary election, Watkins led with 41.8% of the vote, leading to the runoff with Stone who garnered 30.6%. The runoff saw significantly lower turnout compared to the primary, with only 3,719 votes cast. Watkins' campaign labeled the runoff system as voter suppression, emphasizing its costliness and potential to diminish voter participation.

STORY 3: Biden, Trump swap barbs in no-holds barred debate

In Atlanta, a 90-minute presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, moderated by CNN with no live audience, aimed for civility with microphones turned off when not speaking. Despite this, both candidates traded accusations, blaming each other for inflation and trading personal attacks. Trump faced legal challenges, including indictments in Georgia and a recent New York conviction. He attributed these to Biden targeting him politically. Biden criticized Trump's inaction during the Capitol riot and highlighted Trump's legal troubles and personal scandals. Both called for the other's imprisonment, Trump for legal issues and Biden for immigration policies.

The park, under construction next to Lawrenceville Lawn, aims to unite the community through dog-friendly activities. STORY 1: Mystery Snails Are Invading Lake Lanier and State Officials Say They’ve Got to Go

Lake Lanier is facing an invasive species challenge with the emergence of the Chinese/Japanese Mystery Snail. Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials are concerned about this snail's presence, confirmed to be a reproducing population rather than an isolated case. The origin of these snails in Lake Lanier remains uncertain, but possibilities include their sale in food markets and ownership as pets, despite recent regulations against possessing them in Georgia. These snails pose ecological threats by displacing native species and economic risks by damaging boats and equipment, potentially hindering water access. DNR urges the public, especially anglers and boaters, to prevent further spread by ensuring boats and equipment are clean and by not releasing non-native species into Georgia's waters.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Schools Budget Includes Higher Raises for Employees

Gwinnett County Public Schools recently approved a $3.2 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, which includes substantial increases in teacher salaries beyond initial expectations. Originally slated for a $3,000 raise, teachers will now receive $4,000, reflecting additional state funding and community feedback. The budget also boosts the cost-of-living adjustment for other employees from 4% to 4.25%. This $32 million in new funding also supports initiatives like more instructional coaches, SAT For All program funding, graduation coaches, and enhanced resources for multilingual and ESOL programs. Additionally, the district plans a slight reduction in its property tax millage rate, pending public input at hearings scheduled for July.

STORY 3: Clydesdales Appearance in Gwinnett Promises to Be Second To None

The Budweiser Clydesdales, symbols of American tradition, will be in Norcross on July 5th. Their visit supports Folds of Honor, a charity providing educational scholarships to families of fallen service members. Vasquez plans to study international affairs with aspirations of becoming an immigration attorney, inspired by his family's experiences with immigration. Beyond the Gates Scholarship, Vasquez has received numerous other honors and scholarships, reflecting his academic and extracurricular achievements in wrestling and community service.

He abandoned the vehicle, leaving a two-year-old child behind, but was swiftly apprehended by officers. STORY 1: Two Men Arrested as Gwinnett Police Shut Down Illegal Casino

On June 18, Gwinnett County Police Department conducted a raid on Sosa’s Billiards located at 6070 S. Norcross Tucker Road in unincorporated Norcross. This operation followed a year-long investigation initiated after a traffic stop where the occupant revealed visiting a local "casino." Undercover officers confirmed illegal gambling activities at the establishment. Steven Bae Kim, the owner, and Seth Ryan Abernathy, an employee, were arrested for charges related to commercial gambling. Eight others were also arrested for gambling offenses. The raid resulted in the seizure of drugs and cash. GCPD encourages anyone with information to contact detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 404-577-8477.

STORY 2: Kevin Costner: ‘Horizon’ Saga Is a Four-Movie ‘Film Novel’ About The American West

He has revisited the genre in notable projects like "Hatfields and McCoys" and "Yellowstone," which reflect his fascination with the lawless drama of the frontier. Now, Costner returns to his passion with "Horizon: An American Saga," a four-film series he directs and stars in, chronicling the westward expansion during and after the Civil War. Costner emphasizes that each film in the series tells a complete story while advancing a larger narrative, avoiding cliffhangers. He views the cinematic scale as essential for portraying the vast landscapes and epic journeys integral to the western genre, aiming to create a timeless saga that explores themes of survival, community, and the pursuit of dreams amidst historical upheaval.

STORY 1: Gwinnett College’s Juneteenth Celebration Focuses On Fellowship, Family

Georgia Gwinnett College celebrated its second annual Juneteenth with a focus on unity and community. Coordinated by Ryan Smith from Student Life, this year's event aimed for a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the previous year's structured program. Attendees, including student Jasmine Primo and her family, valued the opportunity to reflect on Juneteenth's significance in African American history and culture. For Primo, a psychology major, the event provided a chance to honor ancestors and deepen her understanding of the holiday's importance. Her grandfather, Patrick Grant, emphasized the importance of Juneteenth in connecting younger generations with their heritage and fostering pride in their identity.

STORY 2: Recount Likely in Close For One Gwinnett School Board Seat

In Gwinnett County, the school board election runoff for District 1 saw Rachel Stone narrowly defeating incumbent Karen Watkins by 16 votes, with Stone receiving 50.23% of the votes compared to Watkins' 49.77%. Watkins has the option to request a recount, as the margin falls within Georgia's half a percent threshold for such requests. Meanwhile, in District 3, Steve Gasper secured victory with 60.81% of the vote over Shana V. White. These elections are nonpartisan, and the winners, including Tarece Johnson-Morgan from a previous election, will start their terms on January 1, 2025, facing decisions such as whether to retain Superintendent Calvin Watts, whose contract expires in mid-2025.

STORY 3: Gwinnett Wants to Leave Milage Rate Unchanged

Gwinnett County commissioners are proposing to maintain the general fund millage rate at 6.95 mills, unchanged from last year. This decision, if approved after public hearings, could lead to higher property tax bills due to increased property values. While the rate itself remains stable, higher property assessments mean higher taxable values and potentially higher taxes owed. Homestead exemptions can mitigate increases, but property owners must ensure these are in place. The county's proposed rate is slightly above the rollback rate of 6.5 mills, which would maintain revenue neutrality. Public hearings on the proposed millage rate will be held, with online public comment accepted until July 15.

STORY 4: North Gwinnett Grad Selected for Television Academy Foundation Internship

Kerri Stephenson, a recent graduate of Emerson College, has been chosen for the Television Academy Foundation Internship Program, a prestigious opportunity for college students nationwide. She was selected as one of 40 interns for the 2024 Summer Internship Program, offered by the Foundation annually. Stephenson, a media arts production major, will intern as a comedy writer at Phony Content in Los Angeles, California. This program provides hands-on experience at top Hollywood studios, mentorships, and professional development seminars. Stephenson aims to become an executive producer, inspired by television's ability to provoke dialogue and change, influenced by figures like Shonda Rhimes and Issa Rae. The Television Academy Foundation aims to nurture future television professionals through education and industry engagement.

STORY 5: Tuwanda Rush Williams Wins Vacant Gwinnett Superior Court Seat

Tuwanda Rush Williams secured victory in the runoff for Gwinnett County Superior Court, defeating Magistrate Judge Regina Matthews with 53.1% of the vote. Williams, a former county attorney, will replace retiring Judge Karen Beyers in January, joining Magistrate Judge Kimberly Gallant as the new Superior Court judges. Gallant previously won against Juvenile Court Judge Rodney Harris. These were the only contested Superior Court races in Gwinnett this year, alongside State Court Judge Shawn Bratton's re-election. As nonpartisan elections, no further voting is required this year for these judicial seats.

Leadership Gwinnett Alumni Hosting Ted Event Generations Expo Draws in Seniors on The Hunt For New Information Juneteenth is a Significant Date in African-American History. Here's Why

All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe!

    Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Leadership Gwinnett Alumni Hosting Ted Event

TEDxAlexanderPark, the second annual event featuring nearly a dozen speakers sharing "ideas worth spreading," will take place at the Gas South Theatre in Duluth on Saturday. Organized by Darryll Stinson, the event aims to inspire and empower with talks on diverse topics under the theme "Awe & Wonder." Speakers include notable figures like Jen Gottlieb and Carey Theil, covering subjects from media presence to ending dog racing. With a projected audience of 400 to 500 attendees, up from last year's 100, the event promises networking opportunities and global reach through live recordings. For more details and tickets, visit www.tedxalexanderpark.com.

STORY 2: Generations Expo Draws in Seniors on The Huntt For New Information

The Daily Post's annual Generations Expo drew over 400 attendees this year at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville, focusing on senior needs like home care, estate planning, and healthcare. Jennifer Montalvo, a regular attendee, finds valuable information each year and even discovered her primary care provider there. Organized with support from Northeast Georgia Health System and Publix, the expo features booths from healthcare providers, senior living facilities, and more. For longtime participants like Marrell and Velma Rice of Loganville, the expo offers a chance to connect with friendly experts and explore new services. The event also includes activities like Bingo, food trucks, and gift bags filled with useful items, enhancing its appeal to seniors seeking practical advice and community engagement.

STORY 3: Juneteenth is a Significant Date in African-American History. Here’s Why

Shannon Singleton, a Loganville resident, has attended the Daily Post’s Generations Expo for years, seeking educational resources about heritage and history for her children. Singleton, like many, only learned about Juneteenth when it became a federal holiday three years ago, highlighting gaps in historical education she experienced growing up in Louisiana. She praises the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett for their annual Juneteenth Celebration, held at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville, which educates about the holiday’s significance in African-American history, marking the end of slavery. The event, featuring vendors, music, and cultural exhibits, underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth nationwide and globally. Additional Juneteenth events in Gwinnett County, like Norcross’s celebration with performances and Snellville’s Unity Day, further promote cultural awareness and unity across communities.

STORY 4: Surgeon General Calls for Warning Lables on Social Media Sites

Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, has advocated for mandatory warning labels on social media platforms due to their potential harm to teens' mental health. He highlighted that adolescents spending over three hours daily on social media face heightened risks of anxiety and depression. Murthy likened these risks to other public health hazards like unsafe cars or contaminated food, urging swift action akin to past interventions such as cigarette warning labels. Despite teens' increasing social media use, congressional approval is required for such labels, with no current legislation introduced. Murthy emphasized the urgency of addressing these risks, urging parental vigilance and societal action to safeguard young people's well-being.

STORY 5: Would Banning Vapes Lead to a Resurgence of Young People Smoking?

A new study warns that banning disposable vapes could lead young people to revert to smoking tobacco, as they view smoking and vaping as interchangeable. Led by the University of East Anglia, the research highlights how disposable vapes have become popular among youth due to their affordability, accessibility, and appealing designs and flavors. Despite awareness of vaping's potential harms, many youths use it for stress relief and as a social activity. The study underscores the unintended consequences of strict regulations like bans or price hikes, which could drive young people to illicit vape markets or back to tobacco.

STORY 6: Study Finds That if Your Mom Had Alzheimer’s You’re More Likely to Develop Dementia

New research suggests that individuals whose mothers had Alzheimer’s disease may be more likely to develop dementia due to increased levels of amyloid, a protein linked to the disease. This study, involving 4,400 cognitively unimpaired adults aged 65 to 85, found higher amyloid levels in those reporting maternal Alzheimer’s symptoms. Both maternal history and paternal early-onset symptoms were associated with elevated amyloid. However, late-onset paternal history did not show this correlation. Researchers stress the importance of considering sex-specific parental history in identifying dementia risk and potential implications for future prevention trials. The study was led by Dr. Hyun-Sik Yang and collaborators at Mass General Brigham, Vanderbilt, and Stanford University.

STORY 7: Many Parents say Anxiety Keeps Their Kids from Sleeping Well

A new study involving 781 American parents of children aged one to six reveals that one in four parents find it challenging to get their child to sleep, with over a third of children waking up upset during the night. More than 40% of parents report their child ends up in their bed at night, and about three in ten children under seven insist on having a parent in their room. The study, conducted by the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, emphasizes the importance of consistent bedtime routines to mitigate sleep difficulties, such as anxiety delaying bedtime or night awakenings due to bad dreams.

STORY 1: Gwinnett-native Quavo, Vice-President Kamala Harris will discuss gun violence at summit next week

On Tuesday, Quavo, of the rap group Migos, will join Vice-President Kamala Harris in Atlanta to discuss gun violence as part of the inaugural Rocket Foundation summit, commemorating what would have been his late uncle Takeoff's 30th birthday. Takeoff, whose real name was Kirshnik Khari Ball, was tragically killed in 2022 in Houston, Texas, with Quavo present during the incident. The Rocket Foundation, established in 2022, aims to honor Takeoff's memory and combat gun violence, emphasizing his innocence as a bystander in the shooting. The summit will also feature the distribution of $10,000 grants to 10 organizations working to end gun violence in metro Atlanta.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Bus Hijacker Took Gun Used in Incident from Another Passenger

Joseph Grier, a Stone Mountain man, faces numerous charges, including murder, after hijacking a Ride Gwinnett bus in Atlanta. He's charged with 32 crimes, including hijacking, assault, and kidnapping. Grier allegedly shot and killed passenger Earnest Byrd Jr. during the incident. Police report Grier disarmed a citizen on the bus, leading to the tragedy. The hijacking resulted in a chaotic police chase spanning multiple counties. Mental health issues may have played a role, as Grier claimed to have bipolar disorder. Authorities are investigating the incident, which unfolded after a reported fight on the bus. Grier has a history of criminal offenses, including prior arrests. The bus, part of Ride Gwinnett's commuter service, was intercepted by law enforcement, and Grier was apprehended. The investigation continues, with passengers providing crucial information.

STORY 3: Composting Partnership in Gwinnett Schools Keeps Food Waste Out of Landfills

Third-grader Maya Terrazas from Baggett Elementary School has been composting at home for a year, and recently, she joined the school's Compost Connectors group, which diverts food waste from lunches to make compost for gardens. The program, part of a partnership between the Food Well Alliance and local schools, educates students on sustainability. Baggett, along with other Gwinnett schools, saw over 2,700 pounds of food waste diverted to composting. Through hands-on involvement, students learn about science and environmental issues like pollution. The initiative extends beyond school, inspiring students like Georgia Molina to compost at home. It's a practical, educational approach to fostering eco-consciousness in young minds.

STORY 6: Persistence Is Key in Ridding Yourself of Fire Ants

Dealing with fire ants can be a challenge according to Eric Marlowe. As his family found out when their toddler encountered them firsthand. While fire ants may prey on certain pests, they're generally unwelcome guests in our yards. Chemical treatments, like baits and pesticidal dusts, can be effective but require careful application and consideration of environmental impact. Frequent mowing can disrupt their colonies, encouraging relocation. Additionally, encouraging competition from other ant species may help control fire ant populations. Proper identification and persistence are key in managing these formidable pests, whose sting packs a serious punch.

STORY 7: Ex-Cop Convicted of Kidnapping, Murdering Norcross Teen

Former Doraville Police Officer Miles Bryant has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Susana Morales from Norcross nearly two years ago. A jury found Bryant guilty of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and false report of a crime charges, though he was acquitted of attempted rape. Morales' sister expressed gratitude for the verdict, acknowledging that nothing can bring Susana back. Judge Tamela Adkins imposed the life sentence, emphasizing the severity of Bryant's actions, especially given his former law enforcement role. Bryant apologized to Morales' family before sentencing. The investigation relied on evidence including cell phone data and the recovery of Bryant's handgun near Morales' remains.

STORY 1: Police investigating murder of woman shot at south Gwinnett shopping center

A woman was fatally shot Saturday night at a shopping center in Snellville. Gwinnett Police officers responded to the incident at 3541 Stone Mountain Highway around 7:30 p.m. and found the suspect being subdued by witnesses. The suspect was arrested, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved or a motive, but it may be domestic-related. The suspect is being questioned. Police urge anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, referencing Case No. 24-0042372.

STORY 2: New Lawsuits Filed to stop Mulberry city council elections

Stephen Hughes is trying to stop the new city of Mulberry's council elections following his unsuccessful attempt to block the city's creation. He has filed lawsuits against Gwinnett County and its elections board, arguing that Senate Bill 333, which established the referendum, violates the Georgia Constitution. The lawsuits aim to halt the November 5 council elections. If successful, a judge's ruling could prevent Mulberry from becoming Gwinnett County's 17th city on January 1, 2025. Mulberry supporters argue the lawsuits are driven by developers opposed to the city's formation, while Hughes challenges the bill's provisions on taxation and city services.

STORY 3: Kemp heading to Korea on trade mission

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp are leading a trade mission to South Korea with state legislators and representatives from various state departments. The trip, focused on strengthening existing business relationships, will include meetings with executives from Hyundai, Kia, CJ Foodville, LG, SK, and Hanwha Qcells, many of which are part of Georgia’s growing electric vehicle industry. The mission aims to reinforce partnerships that bring investments and jobs to Georgia, emphasizing the importance of connectivity and open communication for economic progress.

Funded by the Operation Round Up program, the Foundation has given over $20.6 million to local communities since 2005. Applications for grants are open to individuals and organizations in the 10 counties served by Jackson EMC.

STORY 5: Two Gwinnett Schools Name New Principals

Gwinnett County's school board has appointed new principals for Creekland Middle School and Duluth High School. Tyese M. Scott, former principal of McKendree Elementary School, will replace the retiring Kimberly Gillette at Creekland Middle. Cynthia "Cindy" A. Kinchen, previously principal at Duluth Middle School, will take over from Eric Davidson, who has been promoted, at Duluth High. Scott has 29 years in education, including 16 in Gwinnett, while Kinchen has an 18-year career within Gwinnett County Public Schools. STORY 4: Gwinnett County Police are getting a new headquarters

Gwinnett County officials have approved a $5.8 million contract with Precision Planning Inc. to design and provide construction administration services for a new Gwinnett Police Department Headquarters facility. The current headquarters, built in 1977 and expanded in 1988, no longer meets the department's needs. The new facility, expected to be completed in 2026, will consolidate off-site police teams and include a parking deck. The site, located at 800 Hi Hope Road, will replace the existing headquarters and E911 facilities. Funding for the project comes from the 2023 SPLOST Program.

STORY 5: Moderna Announces Good Results From Trial of Combo COVID/Flu Vaccine

Moderna has announced positive results from trials of its experimental mRNA-1083 vaccine, which targets both COVID-19 and influenza. The vaccine showed promising immune responses in older adults, equal to current vaccines targeting either flu or COVID-19. While not ready for this flu season, the vaccine could provide more convenient immunization options and improve compliance. It combines components from Moderna's seasonal influenza vaccine candidate and next-generation COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Safety profiles appear similar to single-virus vaccines. The potential challenge lies in encouraging vaccine-weary Americans to embrace the dual-purpose vaccine.

During a speech at the Georgia Press Association’s annual conference, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones forecasted that inflation would bolster support for former President Donald Trump's potential 2024 White House bid. Coria faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit tracked Coria to Acworth, where he was arrested without incident after being monitored leaving an address in Dunwoody. STORY 2: Seven men face RICO charges for allegedly breaking into 492 cars in Gwinnett

A joint operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office resulted in the indictment of seven men on racketeering charges for breaking into 492 cars and stealing some of them over 17 months. The suspects, including residents from East Point, Fairburn, and Conley, face RICO charges. The investigation, starting in November 2022, involved fingerprint analysis, DNA evidence, surveillance videos, and cell phone data. Five suspects have been arrested, while two remain at large. The DA’s office aims to hold the defendants accountable, with each facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Using artificial intelligence, an international research team identified 863,498 promising antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from the natural world to combat deadly drug-resistant superbugs. Published in the journal Cell, this study addresses the urgent need for new antibiotics as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant public health threat, killing 1.27 million people annually. Researchers verified AI predictions by testing 100 peptides in the lab, finding many effective against resistant bacteria. The study involved analyzing over 60,000 metagenomes globally. The resulting AMPSphere database is now publicly available to aid antibiotic discovery.

STORY 7: Women overweight as teen or young adult more likely to have stroke: study

New research reveals that women who were overweight as teenagers or young adults are significantly more likely to suffer a stroke by age 55, while men do not share the same risk. The Finnish study followed over 10,000 participants for 40 years and found women overweight at ages 14 or 31 had a higher risk of ischemic stroke, even if they lost weight later. Overweight women at age 31 were also more likely to suffer bleeding strokes. Men had increased risk only if obese at age 31. The study emphasizes the long-term health effects of early obesity and suggests health professionals address weight issues in a non-stigmatizing manner.

STORY 1: Ex-Cop Accused of Kidnapping and Murdering 16-year-old Girl Heads to Trial

Former Doraville police officer Miles Bryant is on trial for the kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Susana Morales in July 2022. Morales disappeared while walking home, and her remains were found months later. Bryant is charged with malice and felony murder, kidnapping, attempted rape, and filing a false report. He declined a guilty plea and opted for a jury trial. Jury selection faced issues after a potential juror shared negative information about Bryant. Initial charges against Bryant for concealing Morales' death and filing a false report were upgraded to include kidnapping and murder. The Doraville Police Department fired Bryant following the charges.

STORY 2: HIDDEN VICTIMS: Sex Trafficking Pipeline Runs Through Gwinnett

In October 2019, A.L., a 26-year-old woman, escaped from Earnest Bernard Reed, a self-proclaimed pimp, after being trafficked and abused for over two years. Reed, who went by "Sway Huncho," forced her into sex work, subjected her to beatings, and deprived her of basic needs. She managed to call 911 from a hotel when Reed left her alone, leading to his arrest and subsequent 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. Her case highlights the pervasive issue of sex trafficking in Georgia, affecting people in various settings, including hotels and private homes, with a high incidence in areas like Gwinnett County.

STORY 3: Sex Trafficking Survivors Target Hotels Through Lawsuits

Survivors of sex trafficking have been suing hotels for allowing their exploitation. Plaintiffs claim hotels ignored obvious signs of trafficking, like high visitor rates and excessive condom use, and sometimes even provided drug paraphernalia. Lawyers Jonathan Tonge and Pat McDonough, specializing in such cases, aim to make ignoring trafficking unprofitable for hotels. They’ve settled over 50 cases, with 20 ongoing. Legislative changes, like improved "rape shield" laws and a "lookback" period for civil suits, could help survivors. Post-settlement, attorneys like Cheryl Richardson manage survivors' finances to protect them from exploitation and ensure long-term stability.

Since then, A.L. has rebuilt her life, found employment, and is raising her son. She lives in another state, free from drugs, and is considering studying criminal justice. Her story underscores the ongoing efforts and challenges in combating sex trafficking and supporting survivors.

STORY 7: Personalized flu shots closer after major breakthrough

Researchers have made a breakthrough in personalized flu vaccines by identifying biomarkers that gauge an individual's ability to resist infection. This discovery could revolutionize vaccination programs, allowing for tailored vaccine doses based on a person's immune response. The study, led by Dr. Nhan Nguyen, analyzed blood samples from 286 donors across multiple flu seasons. They found that current vaccine response assessments may not accurately predict immunity, especially for those with high pre-vaccination antibody levels. The identified biomarkers offer a more sophisticated approach to assessing vaccine effectiveness. The researchers aim to develop personalized flu vaccines and diagnostic tests based on these biomarkers, reducing costs and increasing protection against infection. The findings will be presented at the European Society of Human Genetics conference, signaling a significant advancement in personalized healthcare.

Gwinnett County Police found a critically missing 15-year-old girl on Wednesday using a police helicopter. The girl's mother reported her missing around 11:40 a.m. after an argument, discovering she had left their Lawrenceville home without shoes. Due to a medical condition requiring supervision, the Gwinnett Police Aviation Unit was called in. The helicopter quickly located the girl, and officers on the ground, guided by Corporal Hanna, found her upset but safe on a sidewalk. Hanna calmed the girl and safely returned her home. The case showcased the police department's coordinated efforts and crisis training.

STORY 2: ERROR: Computer Glitch Sends Tax Appeal Hearings Email to Many Gwinnettians

On Memorial Day, many Gwinnett County homeowners received erroneous emails about participating in Board of Equalization appeal hearings due to a computer glitch. The emails, sent between 10:42 and 11:43 a.m., were caused by a coding error and affected "several thousand" homeowners. The emails, which included WebEx links for hearings, caused confusion and concerns about potential scams. Arefeen Chowdhury, a candidate for Gwinnett tax commissioner, demanded answers. The county sent a follow-up email explaining the mistake and has taken steps to correct the issue and prevent future occurrences.

However, a report by Georgia consumer groups criticizes the project for severe cost overruns and delays, estimating significant future rate hikes for Georgia Power customers.

STORY 5: New study suggests statins may help prevent cancer

A new study suggests that statins, commonly used to lower cholesterol, may also prevent cancer by blocking a key inflammatory protein. Published in Nature Communications, the research shows that statins can obstruct the TLR3/4 and TBK1-IRF3 pathways, which are involved in cancer development from chronic inflammation. Led by Professor Shawn Demehri of Massachusetts General Hospital, the study found that the statin pitavastatin effectively suppresses the IL-33 protein, reducing inflammation and preventing cancer in mice. Analysis of health records from over 200 million people indicated that pitavastatin use is linked to a significantly lower risk of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The findings suggest that statins may offer a safe and effective means to combat inflammation-related cancers.
