It’s the final episode of the first season of Healing Beyond Food, and today Jess is discussing the deep importance of being a better friend to ourselves and trying to challenge the inner critic.
In a world where women are often pressured to excel in every role they take on – from being a mother, partner, or professional, to maintaining a certain appearance – Jess invites us to explore the concept of self-compassion.
Topics discussed throughout the episode:
- The societal pressures women face to constantly improve in every aspect of life and how it affects our mental and physical health.
- How Jess’ clients have experienced significant health issues stemming from a lack of self-compassion.
- Jess’ journey dealing with self-criticism during her time in school and her journey towards self-compassion.
- Embracing your own healing process.

This isn’t going to be your typical ‘eat less and exercise more’ episode about weight loss because I think we’re all sick of hearing this advice.
Today Jess chats about why traditional weight loss advice falls short and can even be counterproductive.
There is no TikTok or Reel of the ‘ideal’ workout routine for weight loss because it’s not taking into account who YOU are.
You can’t copy an influencer's "what I eat in a day" and expect to look like them because nowhere in there is anything about your life, your history, and what's going to work for you.
You are unique, so you can’t fit yourself into a box and assume that what works for one person will work for you.
Timestamps:
00:00 Intro to the topic of weight loss and why common weight loss tips fail to address the full picture.
03:09 The role of environmental and life story factors in an individual’s ability to manage weight.
06:01 Why "calories in, calories out" is lacking in context and discussing the harm of rapid weight loss.
07:20 Looking at nutrient density over calorie counting and the impact of nutrient deficiencies and restrictive diets on overall health.
10:06 Psychological aspects of weight gain.
12:45 Jess's experience with weight fluctuations and the societal pressure on body image.
16:41 Critique of the weight loss industry and its failure to provide sustainable, supportive solutions.
18:42 Approaching weight loss with care.
