  • Unfortunately a LOT of us view traveling as a luxury. It’s something that isn’t necessary, and so because of that we choose to delay our vacations, which means that we’re actually not all that good at traveling when the time finally comes. It’s like any activity we perform infrequently – we probably suck at it! And to make matters worse, if we see travel as a luxury good, that also means we think it’s necessary to spend a ton of money on it as well, which our guests today have completely disproven. We’re joined by the couple behind Trip of a Lifestyle, Lauren and Steven, who are going to share how they travel on the cheap. Here’s a quick and dirty summation of some of their notable milestones: they embarked on a 45 day road trip after college, then rather than honeymooning in Hawaii for a week they stuck around for six months. Shortly after that they purchased their first home, in cash, all while making less than $100,000 combined! They’ve traveled abroad, visited every national park in the US, and they both retired from their full time jobs at age 29. Listen as we discuss everything from menu hacks while on the road, to bigger discussions around giving yourself “permission” to pursue the kind of life that excites you!

  • The results from our survey are in, and it turns out that everyone’s gotta eat!.. Groceries are a universal expense and you likely have felt the increased pressure on your wallet over the past few years. Prices at the supermarket have increased over 26% from 2019 to today according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a pattern Americans hate to see – paying more for the same old stuff, but luckily we’re joined by Brian Vines who knows all about the rising prices of groceries and how that affects you as a consumer. He’s the deputy editor of special projects at one of our absolute favorite publications, Consumer Reports. And we’re going to talk about how you can pay less at your local bodega, grocery store, warehouse club, or wherever you buy your food. We discuss going digital with your savings, the rise of rebate apps, the double edged sword of convenience, unlikely places to find discounts, and more. Plus we venture into pet insurance as well as affordable dog food!

  • Don’t let short term thinking and a myopic view of your retirement investments derail your financial future! Our guest today puts it succinctly: your IRA is an IOU to the IRS. What would you owe the government now compared to in the future? Will tax brackets return to the heights we saw in the 1940s? Will the government continue to allow Roth IRAs to grow and be drawn upon tax-free? These are just a few of the topics we discuss today. “It would be tough to find anyone who knows more about IRAs than Ed Slott” – and that’s not a quote from us here at How To Money about our guest, but from USA Today. Ed Slott’s company is the nation’s leading source of accurate, timely IRA expertise, and analysis which they provide to financial advisors, institutions, consumers, and media. He’s often quoted in the New York Times, Forbes, Kiplinger, and countless other publications. He’s appeared on virtually all the TV networks, and he's the author of the new book “The Retirement Savings Time Bomb Ticks Louder” which we get into today. Thanks for listening!

  • How would you like a completely paid-for college?! That sounds like an absurd pipe dream, but our guest today did it herself. In fact, she would receive a cash check each semester for any additional expenses she might’ve incurred as well! ALSO, scholarships paid for six months studying abroad in Spain – she’s not messing around! We’re joined by Jocelyn Pearson, the founder of The Scholarship System, which is an online resource that offers training sessions and online courses to teach folks how to find, apply for, and win valuable scholarships that can allow you to graduate debt free. To date, The Scholarship System has helped families secure over $13 million in scholarships by teaching them how to find the scholarships that are winnable (including specific search terms), to avoid the more scammy types of scholarships, utilizing AI to help you snag free money, how you can even create your own scholarship just by asking, the optimal timing for highschool students to begin applying for scholarships, and much more!

  • Join us for a very laid back conversation with our better halves: Kate and Emily sit down behind the mics with us while we enjoyed a summer vacation at the beach last week. Rather than field listener questions, we had a delightful and inquisitive discussion that centered around increased spending. How we’ve managed rising prices whether that’s simply due to inflation or if lifestyle creep is a factor, accounting for additional sources of income, whether our frugality keeps us from more expensive pursuits, hitting pause on investing, the fear of running out of money (or having too much?), raising money savvy kids, aging parents, and plenty more!

  • Who remembers fire and tornado drills back when they were in school?! Even though in the moment they seemed like a complete waste of time, looking back as adults it’s easy to see how important it is to run a drill of what you would do in the event of a fire. And if you were in the scary scenario where you DID have a fire at your school, you were probably glad to have gone through the motions and rehearsed exactly what you should do. Insurance is kind of like a fire drill- most of the time it feels completely unnecessary, but in the rare instances where you actually need to put it to use, you’re more than happy to know you have that policy in place. And while virtually everyone is required to have car insurance, fewer folks have had the misfortune of being in an accident. So one of the problems we’re addressing today is what you should do after you’ve been involved in a car accident- it’s a surreal experience that can catch you off guard. We discuss things like diminished value and notifying your insurance company, but we also discuss how you can be financially prepared for accidents and the steps you can take to reduce the cost of insurance.

  • Teaching isn’t typically synonymous with accumulating vast quantities of wealth but our guest today, Dan Otter, is here to say otherwise. And actually, it turns out that teachers have a way to totally supercharge their retirement by investing even more money than they otherwise thought possible – that’s just one of the many topics we cover. But Dan Otter is an elementary school teacher turned 403b hero in the world higher ed and teachers. He is the founder of the much referenced site, 403bWise.org, and we’re pumped to discuss the different ways that teachers (a massively underappreciated profession BTW) can financially prepare for their futures. We discuss how to know whether your 403b is any good, why more options doesn’t necessarily mean better options, alternative paths to consider if your 403b is crummy, and plenty more today!
