In recent weeks, The Sunday Independent revealed that a customer took legal action against Empress Fine Jewels, which was ordered to pay her nearly €35,000, after diamond rings she entrusted to the store were reported stolen while being taken by a pensioner to another location to be cleaned. She received a call the next day from the jeweller, telling her the rings had been stolen from the pensioner on a Dublin Bus. Another customer of the same Dublin-based jeweller was “disappointed but not surprised” to learn that a €3,000 emerald and diamond ring she purchased contains fake gemstones. Ali Bracken joins Kevin Doyle to speak about her investigation into Empress Fine Jewels. Host; Kevin Doyle, Guest; Ali Bracken

“I mean there was no coddle or any of this sort of stuff even though you think he's such a traditional dub, don't you?
“I'd say he's better taste than you and I. He's floating around the Mediterranean and he's probably eaten very nicely. So, he ordered a haloumi burger, and I had embarrassingly had chicken wings. What an amateur I am.
The Crime World host reveals that eating habits can tell a lot about how dangerous a murderer is, remembering killer Joe O’Reilly who, she says, didn’t lose his appetite before appealing for information on the death of his wife on The Late Late Show.

Lawyers for Conor McGregor dramatically withdrew a bid to introduce new evidence in his civil rape case appeal. Evidence included allegations made by Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins – former neighbours of Ms Nikita Hand.
Ms Hand’s counsel John Gordon said his side was in ‘shock’ at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application.
In her affidavit, Ms O’Reilly had claimed she was woken by sounds of “screaming and shouting” from Ms Hand’s house.
Looking from her window, she said she could see “Ste’s arms moving up and down as if he was hitting Nikita”.
“I also saw him moving his hips in a way that indicated to me that he was kicking her,” she claimed.
In an affidavit, Ms Hand dismissed this account. "My ex-partner Stephen Redmond [known as 'Ste'] did not assault me on the night of December 9/10, 2018, and never assaulted me in the course of our relationship, or since," she said. "I don't want to speculate on why Samantha and Steven are making up these lies."
Ms Hand’s counsel John Gordon said his side was in “shock” at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application.
He said it was "not appropriate" to dress up the withdrawal of the application in such a way.
The barrister said Ms Hand had been “put through the wringer” after the allegation, which she denounced as “lies”, was outlined in court and reported in the newspapers.
Today on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Shane Phelan, Legal Affairs Editor with the Irish Independent, to unpack a busy opening day in Conor McGregor's civil rape appeal.

Six months into the new Government, and all seems to be oddly quiet in the world of Irish politics. Yes, we’ve had the furore over the Regional Independent Group’s support for the Coalition, Verona Murphy’s survival of no-confidence and the ruckus that followed Michael Lowry’s memorable two-finger salute. But since the dust settled on all the “ruaille buaille” of those rocky first days in January, business has been unusually quiet in Dáil Éireann. So, what has this Government actually achieved so far? Has it lived up to its numerous election promises? Or is it simply too early to call our elected officials to account?
