League of Wildness,
Motivation and Discipline are two very different concepts that I believe often times get confused and/or misused.
Motivation is all in your mind and discipline is all in your actions.
You are what you did so make sure you are taking action and not just getting excited/motivated to potentially do something.

League of Wildness,
I just posted this as my currently favorite quote, "Relentless Forward Progress". It's been a very useful concept for me in 2023 and I hope my experience sparks some thought in yourself.

Mr. Money Mustache recently posted an excellent article after he'd consumed 80+ of content from Dr. Andrew Huberman. Pete (aka Mr. Money Mustache) also made an excellent chart comparing and contrasting what he termed the "Default" vs "Science" lifestyles. This inspired me to make a chart comparing the "Standard" vs "Wild" lifestyles.
My #1 question is: why do we need a Neuroscientist to prescribe a lifestyle that would probably be obvious to our grandparents? This is the question that continues to haunt me.

I saw an article about how consistently diets DO NOT work and it made me consider the importance of longterm repeatability. Specifically, if you are going to pursue something to improve your health and fitness it MUST be consistently repeatable for essentially - the rest of your life. Interestingly - as you get healthier there will come a point where to get even healthier it will take massive effort to continue to improve your health. At this point, the focus can start to shift towards maintenance.

In this episode:
A quote by ultrarunner Courtney Douwalter: “The best way for me to train right now is no coach, no plan, and really just tuning into those signals – physical, mental, emotional,” she says. “Then every day I can assess myself and see where I’m at for the day." Have you tried this approach and does it work for you? Do you need a plan going into your workout or do you feel your way through it?We often talk about "listening to your body", but knowing that we often aren't honest with ourselves, does this result in gaps in our health/fitness? When you are out in places like airports, waiting at appointments etc, do you notice things about people and their health patterns? Have you noticed that anything has changed in the last 5-10 years?Do you talk to your kids about fitness and nutrition, or do you mostly set an example? 5. What food do you think is the most underrated in terms of how much you get for your money?...and much more!If you have questions, comments, or a potential guest suggestion please send a note to [email protected] or send us a DM to @wildgymco on Instagram. League of Wildness,
We're back with @wilddanvinson and @kimbreimeier.
This recording is from a weekly Packmeet in our wild gym League of Wildness private Facebook group. Kim and I have been sending each other a list of topics to marinate on before we record and the discussions have been solid.
We continue to LIVE the live comments from the LoW during our discussion - keep em' coming.
In this episode:
Are stretching and mobility work the same thing? Why do you think avoiding your phone/device in the morning makes such a big difference? We talk often about movement and exercise, and the differences between them. It seems like walking, and its sibling, rucking, can offer the perfect balance of both. Is that accurate? How much could we accomplish for our health goals if we just did those 2 things? What do you think is the biggest factor that keeps people from spending more time outdoors? When I was a kid, fitness standards were a part of our physical education curriculum. Do you think adults should be aiming for certain fitness goals? What would they look like? If you were going to "prescribe" 3 stretches and 3 exercises to do daily because they make the biggest difference, what would they be?...and much more!If you have questions, comments, or a potential guest suggestion please send a note to [email protected] or send us a DM to @wildgymco on Instagram. League of Wildness,
We're back with @wilddanvinson and @kimbreimeier.
This recording is from a weekly Packmeet in our wild gym League of Wildness private Facebook group. Much of the discussion was inspired by listening to Dr. Peter Attia discuss his new book, Outlive. I find it so fascinating in our increasingly modern and complex world how it truly is the most basic elements that provide the biggest levers to pull in regards to our health.
We continue to LIVE the live comments from the LoW during our discussion - keep em' coming.
In this episode:
How do you measure health? What are your top 3 metrics for measuring health?Shouldn't health be the default state? In the wild - most animals are healthy by default? What are the top 3 obstacles to health you see for yourself and for others? What is your reaction to the idea of 'prescribing' exercise? League of Wildness,
We're back with @wilddanvinson and @kimbreimeier.
This recording is from a weekly Packmeet in our wild gym League of Wildness private Facebook group. Much of the discussion was inspired by Kelly and Juliet Starrett's new book Built to Move. There are a ton of parallels to what we talk about at wild gym and we really appreciate and respect Kelly's no B.S. approach to health and fitness. We also love the live comments from the LoW during our discussion - keep em' coming.
In this episode:
When did health/fitness become something you had to consciously think about and plan? How much of our modern ailments would be solved by spending more time outside? Why do we have to do so much to counteract the human zoo we've created? Why do we need books, app, websites, coaches, etc to tell us to do things that would be more or less 'natural' if we didn't live in a man-made environment? How to reconcile the benefits of modernity with living in a way that doesn't require special programs to fix all the consequences of desk work. What single health/fitness practice has had the biggest impact in the past year? How does the idea that going outside is a somewhat profound solution to many modern ailments strike you? Can it really be that simple?...and much more!If you have questions, comments, or a potential guest suggestion please send a note to [email protected] or send us a DM to @wildgymco on Instagram. I was recently recommended the book 4,000 Weeks - Time Management for Mortals by my good friend, the Wildman of the North, Erl. I've read the book twice now and I suspect round #3 is imminent. I believe it is a must-read for every member of the LoW and it's principles will have a dramatic impact on your mental health and ultimately - life satisfaction. Thank you, Erl!

League of Wildness,
We're back with a solo-cast from @wilddanvinson.
I've been getting into a really solid system combining Rucking + Running in addition to more classic strength and conditioning workouts. I added it up and on average - I'm doing 3.28 "workouts" every day. Keep in mind - this is the combination of Yoga/Mobility, classic workouts, Rucking, Running, and good old fashioned static-stretching.
Some days I'll "workout" for 2+ hours and other days I'll be at 30-40 minutes. What's important to recognize is that I do something everyday - every rep counts.
I also dive into a more nuanced protocol known as "Interval Weight Training". I've been getting into these workouts the past few weeks and they are no joke. They're not something you'd necessarily do year-round, but can be used in 4-6 weeks blocks if you want to crank up the intensity. I encourage you to try the concept out for yourself.
It's good to be back on the mic!

It's good to get back on the mic. We just wrapped up the Wild Day Challenge - a 21 day challenge where we committed to working out OUTSIDE. The energy and enthusiasm was epic and we're psyched to do more. Even if you were not able to participate in the challenge, I'd still encourage you to join the group.

League of Wildness,
I recorded this episode immediately after an awesome workout I did out here in the wild that I wanted to share with you all. The idea was to accumulate 75 Pullups while hiking about 4.5 miles up a mountain. I did this by stopping at different trees along the way and busting out Pullups off of a branch. Afterward, I did an arm finisher where I did 3 sets of 8 Curls with a rock (tempo 31x1) immediately followed by 5 heavy single-arm curls (each arm) with my backpack. It was legit!
As mentioned in the episode, you don't need to hike up a mountain to do this workout. Load up a backpack and head out into your neighborhood or local park with pocket monkii, MB2, OG monkii bars, or whatever else you have. It's easy to quickly set up, bust out a set of Rows and Curls, then continue on your way. You'd be amazed at how much volume you can do without breaking yourself down following this Microworkout protocol.
Try it out and let me know how it goes!
