PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHON
The first PTA film set outside of L.A., this journey puts us in a new location, and on a new path for the director. Quiet, slow, serious and mature.
Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion in 1950s London. Women come and go in Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship. His carefully tailored existence soon gets disrupted by Alma, a young and strong-willed woman who becomes his muse and lover.
Kane and Rhys enter a more elevated lifestyle, escaping the chaos of the 70s adult film industry, or American Western oil-rush, and instead explore something with a bit of... order.

PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHON
Stoned. Confused. Obsessed with television.
This is not a description of the show's hosts, but instead the film they are tackling today; the dark sheep of PTA's filmography.
In a California beach community, private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello tends to work his cases through a smoky haze of marijuana. One day, Shasta, a former lover, arrives out of the blue to plead for Doc's help; it seems that Shasta's current beau, rich real-estate tycoon Mickey Wolfmann, has a wife who may be plotting to commit him to a mental hospital. When Mickey and Shasta both disappear, Doc navigates a psychedelic world of surfers, stoners and cops to solve the case.
Rhys and Kane make their way one of the strangest of the director's films, one that feels almost a bit displaced. While trying to fill in the gaps, the boys figure out that maybe they're not supposed to be filled at all.

Maybe Joaquin Phoenix will bring the world of PTA a bit of stability. Wait, he's one of PTA's least stable protagonist's?
'The Master' sees Freddie Quell, a troubled, boozy drifter, struggling with the trauma of World War II and whatever inner demons ruled his life before that. On a fateful night in 1950, Freddie boards a passing boat and meets Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a religious movement called the Cause.
A fan favourite of many PTA-followers, but will Rhys and Kane join the alluring cult of 'The Master'?

After having some laughs with PTA's prior efforts; there's no laughs to be had when there will be blood. The director digs a little deeper than he usually would, and the man strikes oil.
Ruthless silver miner, turned oil prospector, Daniel Plainview moves to oil-rich California. Using his adopted son HW to project a trustworthy, family-man image, Plainview cons local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. However, local preacher Eli Sunday suspects Plainviews motives and intentions, starting a slow-burning feud that threatens both their lives.
Kane and Rhys go prospecting together, and fight the foundations of religion itself, in this hard to swallow, but dramatically satisfying film.

PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHON
PTA decides to take a quick break from epic-proportion madhouse ensembles that make your mind work in overtime, to both explore the complexities of something as simple as love, and work with Adam Sandler.
Barry Egan is a timid and shy man leading a lonely, uneventful life -- partly due to the constant berating he suffers from his seven sisters. However, several events transpire that shake up Egan's mundane existence, one of which is falling in love with one sister's co-worker, Lena.
Kane and Rhys unpack what they think PTA is trying to say about love in this effort, and try to figure out why he may have decided to stay from the ensembles he was more used to and instead go for something a bit more... intimate.

How does one go on living after watching 'Magnolia'? You record a podcast about it. Impressively, the pod doesn't reach the length of the film itself.
On one random day in the San Fernando Valley, a dying father, a young wife, a male caretaker, a famous lost son, a police officer in love, a boy genius, an ex-boy genius, a game show host and an estranged daughter will each become part of a dazzling multiplicity of plots, but one story.
Rhys and Kane take on this daunting film, intimidated by its length, intense themes and the slight possibility that Kane isn't into this maybe as much as Rhys is.

Everyone is blessed with one special thing.
For PTA, it seems to be film making.
It's 1977, and teenage busboy Eddie Adams gets discovered by Jack Horner, who takes him under his wing and transforms him into the adult-film sensation: Dirk Diggler.
Rhys and Kane bite off PTA's second feature, which already packs in a giant ensemble, and shoves its audience deep into the adult-film-industry of the 1970s. There's drugs, blood, inspirational character transformations, and Jessie's Girl.

PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHON
The hardcore film analysis helmets are coming on. Rhys and Kane are taking a break from horror and kids movies to go through the filmography of one of Rhys' favourite directors: PTA.
This episode sees a bit of a rundown of who Paul Thomas Anderson is as a film maker, why we should care about him, and explores his first directorial feature.
A seed has been planted, and a whole floodgate opened unleashing: strange paternal dynamics, lost men in a world full of loneliness, and John C. Reilly. Without any of which, a PTA movie could not be formed.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
After a long road of many little singers covered in fur, a few strange A-to-B kids movies, and only one Dave and Uncle Ian, the entire Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise has been marathoned.
Kane and Rhys are more cut-out for horror movies and iconic trilogies, but they've done the hard work and walked the line... now its time that they rank these Chipmunk films and cleanse them from the podcast for good.

ALIEN FRANCHISE MARATHON
Alien is BACK... and Marathon Me could not be more excited. Horror franchise installments from this year have been pretty damn good, and with Fede Alvarez on-board, things are looking promising.
In this entry, we join the timeline between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) and see Space colonisers come face to face with the most terrifying life-form in the universe while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station. I wonder if we'll see a familiar face(hugger) or two.
Rhys and Kane revisit the franchise, place Romulus in their ranking, and debate all things alien-babies and maternal fears once again.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
A fourth entry to a beloved children's franchise that changes up the look and feel of the originals and is set on a road trip?... oh no. We've been here before and it wasn't pretty.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore believe that Dave is going to propose to his girlfriend Samantha in Miami. In a bid to retain their place in Dave's life, the three set out to stop him. And the Chipettes are hosting American Idol, but don't worry about that.
Rhys and Kane buckle up for the road chip of a lifetime. With expectations down to the ground, there's no way to go but up.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
The next logical step in this series based around Chipmunk children who can sing: they all have to survive the trials and tribulations of a desert island.
Dave, Alvin, Simon, Theodore, (Brittany, Jeanette, Eleanor and Ian) ALL find themselves on a cruise together. All is good, the world is content. Until one crazy thing leads to another, and the crew of misfits, oddballs and rodents all end up stranded on a desert island. They encounter treasure, volcanoes and Jenny Slate.
Kane gets sent back to a childhood favourite, and Rhys gets sent to hell. Both men... are chipwrecked.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
History has been made: the first ever Squeakquel. They said they were mad... but Hollywood made it happen.
Following Alvin and the Chipmunks' rise to fame in the first film, only to discover that family and love is much more valuable than being in the spotlight, they move onto the next logical narrative step: going to high school. And also there's girl chipmunks now, too.
Kane and Rhys mourn the loss of screen time spent with Jason Lee in this entry, and discuss how it makes no f*cking sense that these little creatures were accepted in human high school.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
It's all been building up to this one... the journey of Dave Savil and his borderline psychotic break, where Chipmunks take over the man's life.
There's Alvin, Simon and Theodore, and the whole world is there oyster. They're not just cool, handsome, smart and ambitious... they can also SING. And this is all that Jason Lee... I mean Dave, needs to save his crumbling life.
Kane and Rhys start to unpack their watch-a-thon of the Chipmunk movies and answer the question if the original still holds up now as grown-ass adults.

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
The (fury) road has come to an end. With five films down, it has been an emotional journey for the two men.
The marathon has taken them across a sandy landscape, touching on four separate decades, and an entire evolution of Mad Max was witnessed. From humble beginnings in regional Victoria - to a world stage, starring A-list talent.
Rhys and Kane individually rank the franchise, to very divisive opinions, talk about the future of Mad Max, and go on a bit of a tirade about the direction of the film industry as a whole.
This franchise is a sad one to say good night to...

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
I guess every franchise has to do one... prequel. BUT, a prequel for one of the most interesting and open-ended characters in the franchise? Maybe sold on this one.
Almost a decade after Fury Road, Furiosa gets her well-deserved prequel film that brings the Mad Max franchise to a point where we have no Max anymore. It is the world that shines the brightest light.
Rhys and Kane experience their most divisive film yet. Something that may tear the very fabric of Marathon Me apart. Potentially it takes a wasteland to tear these two men apart. The wasteland is often known to do so.

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
Mad Max in the 21st century - what could this possibly look like? An insane world opened up for the wasteland to thrive and expand.
Max enters a world entirely over-run by sand and close to $160 million of set-design. It is fresh. It is next level. It is the next stage of the wasteland.
Rhys and Kane discuss this giant leap for the franchise - entering a whole new era of filmmaking. The boys make sure their marathon is ready for a thrill-ride with no brakes, only high octane progress.

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
The world of Mad Max has been corrupt by a sickness. Not radiation poisoning, but rather, the cocaine-fueled 80s - at it's gotten into every pore of this sequel.
A war has passed, and Max now has luscious locks of hair to accompany his fists of fury. Constantly evolving, the wasteland has met its next stage, full of mutants and live-action cartoon characters. At least we can feel at home knowing there's still a whole lot of sand around.
Rhys and Kane dive into this instalment that trades cars for camp, as they can't quite decide if they love or hate this black sheep.

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
It's madder. It's Maxer. It's 2er.
Max is now a lonely, hardened, high-definition man - taking on the wasteland that was thrust upon him.
The world has deeply entered an apocalypse, and turned to a primitive hellscape. We rejoin Max with everything lost, forced to realise that it isn't about the destination, but the friends you make along the way (no one says this directly, but it is what happens).
Rhys and Kane put their seatbelts on for a full-throttle sequel that emphasises the action and intensity. The boys discuss their hatred of sand but love of Mad Max.

MAD MAX FRANCHISE MARATHON
It's about time the Australian boys take on a franchise from their great nation. Time for a visit to the motherland. Warm your engines, because they're taking on Mad Max.
The first Mad Max is not what most imagine when they picture pop culture's favourite rev-head, but it is the closest glimpse we've gotten so far of how the world turned into the wasteland. We see how Max actually became mad; and its an interesting tale nonetheless.
Rhys, self-defined Mad-Max-maniac, revisits an old favourite, whilst Kane takes his first taste of Mel Gibson as Max and shares his first experience.
