The children's cousin and uncle, 17-year-old Adan Canela and 24-year-old Policarpio Espinoza were charged in this horrific homicide and after three well publicized trials, were convicted of the grisly murders. Sergeant Prothero, a 13-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department, had been working as an off-duty security guard at the J. Brown Jewelers store in the 1800 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville when he was slain in the parking lot of the store.

Three hours after the womens' bodies were found, Mary's son, 22-year-old TaVarius McNeal was also found shot to death.
