    As technology has advanced, primary innovations have expanded optics and photonics beyond classical optical lens engineering and image capturing. “When you think about the first advancement in optics, the invention of the laser was sort of the big invention,” Sankey said.

    The innovation of lasers happened in the 1960s in Malibu. Next was the invention of the optical fiber, which allowed doctors to take the laser and amplify signals and send them through a fiber. This created a new market for telecommunications and broadband applications such as the internet.

    “The invention of the laser, followed by the semi-conductor and optical fiber, has paved the way for so much information transfer,” Egerton explained. “It underpins the development in many different fields, not just within optics.”

    While these early inventions made waves in the field, they have also led to many other inventions and innovations.

    “This industry of photonics and optics is revolutionizing our world,” Vogt said.
