Let's close out the year with some Christmas cheer. Ancient Greek princess Daphne is cursed to be a mermaid until she can find the reincarnation of her jilted lover and prove her selflessness. Christmastime might just be the right time to do it. What similarities does this film bear to another well-known mermaid film? (You know exactly which one.) When do mermaids get meta? And most importantly, what IS the meaning of Christmas? I don't have the answer for that question, but I think I can handle the rest on this season finale of the Mermaid Movie Club. // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

In our final installment of our Little Mermaid series, let's look at the third and final Little Mermaid film (for now). Whatever happened to Ariel's mother? How does an underground night club work underwater? Why do BOTH of Ariel's parents look like her when none of her sisters do? And perhaps the most important question: CAN WE STOP THESE SEQUELS ALREADY????? That, plus I share that one time where I came face to face with Ariel herself, Jodi Benson. The best things come in threes, right? // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

In the second installment of our Little Mermaid series, delve into the infamous direct-to-video sequel that seems to ask more questions than it answers, mostly, "Why did they make this?" "Who was this made for?" "How did they get away with such a half-baked sequel?" The answers to these questions, plus, the billionth time I try to defend a bad movie because of reasons. Mostly personal ones.

(Re-upped 11/15/2020 for editing purposes. Clips were out of order.) We're gearing up for our big Ariel shellebration with a bit of a primer of Ariel's past appearances in media. An evolution of Ariel, of sorts. Movies, TV, books, even manga--it's fair game. This was something I wrote for a potential YouTube video and decided to just make into a podcast and share with you! Hopefully it will tide you over until next week's episode on original Little Mermaid film. Who knows, you might learn something you never knew before and discover something worth checking out. / I mentioned a video about Walt Disney Home Video from Yesterworld, watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE-C8rOeo74 // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

The world's most famous mermaid finally comes to the Mermaid Movie Club! We all know her story, but we all get something different out of it, for better or worse. Learn how one fish saved Disney Animation as we know it and kicked off the most storied eras of the studio, plus, why I think Ariel is actually NOT a bad role model. Don't @ me. Listen to find out. // I quoted an article from The Mary Sue, which you can read here: https://www.themarysue.com/little-mermaid-queer-subtext/ / Treasures Untold: The Making of The Little Mermaid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdMMg6OSn1Q / Another making-of documentary that I got some research from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WasEtuSK8VY // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

In our second Halloween installment, travel back to the early 1960s for the moody Night Tide. Carnival mermaid Mora might be more than just a girl in a fabric mermaid tail when she's linked to the deaths of her two previous boyfriends. What might happen to the strapping young sailor she's fallen for? Who is the mysterious figure that follows her? What is the appropriate rate to charge as a professional mermaid in the early 1960s? I'll say this much: I don't have all the answers. WARNING: This episode contains mentions of drug use, sexual situations, body horror, and self harm. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE proceed with caution. // This week on the Movie Club, this fish-out-of-water story REALLY has some gills. Or maybe that's just its protagonist. On her quest to find herself, teenage Mia finds out in all the worst ways. A gruesome transformation slowly overtakes her, revealing what she truly is--whether she wants to believe it or not. The worst part? Mia will do everything she can to stop this from happening in Blue My Mind. // I quoted these interviews in this episode: https://meaww.com/lisa-bruhlmann-blue-my-mind-killing-eve-director / https://anatomyofascream.wordpress.com/2018/12/01/interview-blue-my-mind-writer-director-lisa-bruhlmann/ // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

This week we found this hidden treasure: 2003's mermade-for-TV film (read: rejected TV pilot), Mermaids. Three sisters avenge the murder of their father by a greedy fisherman, but find out pretty quickly that it's hard out here for a fish. I'll explore the film's mythological connections (and there's a lot), how one character's story closely resembles that of another mermaid we all know and love, and how this mermaid tale is a bit more Charmed than H2O. Plus, a brief look at the history of the supposedly family-friendly television network this film debuted on. Let's just say I had questions by the end of it.

Taking a bit of a holiday on this episode of the Mermaid Movie Club. Not really, I just mean we're jetting off to Greece for...stuff and things. Can a troubled college professor complete his life's work and keep his job? What happens when a feisty mermaid goddess gets involved? All this, plus a peek into some Greek mythology, American swimming statistics, and what makes Debbie Harry relevant to this movie. // I mentioned a Red Cross survey somewhere in this show, get a look at it here: https://www.redcross.org/content/dam/redcross/enterprise-assets/pdfs/Water-Safety-Poll-2014.pdf // I also mentioned this video by Courtney Mermaid about tail safety: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-gYhkBFxyA // Visit the all-new Mermaid Movie Club homepage for updates and more: http://mermaidmovieclub.tumblr.com / Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

Welcome back to the club! We're taking a closer look at one of the most famous mermaid films of all time, Splash, on this edition of the show. What trends did this movie start, both in and out of the mermaid realm? Also, we look at a bit of theme park history as it connects to this movie, and also question Disney's censors. It's a shell of a time. // I mentioned Josh Gad's Reunited Apart with the cast and crew of Splash at the top of the show, watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbFIgQoHSJM Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

In this installment of the Mermaid Movie Club, we dive into one of my favorite mermaid films of all time, Stephen Chow's 2016 epic rom-com The Mermaid! This film has everything: Octopus men, John Waters mustaches, mermaids who walk on their tails, poison sea urchins, and even attempted assassination! It may sound crazy, because it is. What unusual ways does this film tie back to the original story of The Little Mermaid? And what connections can you make to Chinese mermaid legends? Dive in to find out. // For more on the Shan Hai Jing: http://totallyhistory.com/shan-hai-jing/ / Learn more about Chinese mermaid legends: https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/culture/2016-02/22/content_23591906.htm // Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: tinyurl.com/xandriafb / Please rate and review on Apple Podcasts!

It's one thing when you're a teenager going through major changes in your life. New schools, new places, new friends, new weird things happening to your body, people suddenly telling you that you're turning into a mermaid upon your 12th birthday...it's a lot. Now imagine being targeted by a group of overzealous hunters out for your magical blood! It only gets wilder from there. Wait--magical blood? What's the deal with that? Happy International Mermaid Day! I thought of no better way to shellebrate this day (no, I am not capable of simply using the word "celebrate" apparently) than by shellebrating five of my favorite mers of the big and the small screens! These are just a handful of mers who had a big impact on me in some way, even going beyond Ariel (let's be honest--Ariel is everyone's fave). They're heroes, princesses, oddballs, and some are more relatable than you think. We even run into an old friend from a past episode! Be sure to let me know on Twitter or Instagram (or through the Anchor voice message box) what mers had a lasting impact on you. Don't be a strange-mer! (I think I met my pun quota now.) // Be sure to rate and review on Apple Podcasts! In this episode we dive into one of the earliest Disney Channel Original Movies, 1999's The Thirteenth Year! In this episode we answer the questions: What happens when a teenage boy starts growing scales and fins upon his thirteenth birthday? Why are there so many films about teenagers spontaneously turning into merfolk? Where do Dave Coulier and Kristen Stewart fit into all of this? Dive in to find out. // The MTV interview I mention at the top of the show can be found here: http://www.mtv.com/news/2900742/the-thirteenth-year-chez-starbuck-interview-dcom/ // Follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @mermaidxandria / Like Mermaid Xandria on Facebook: https://tinyurl.com/xandriafb

For our first Mermaid Movie Club selection, we're going to talk about the 2006 film Aquamarine! This is known as a staple of teen cinema of the mid-2000s, adapted from a beloved teen novel of the same name. In this show I address the question: is accuracy everything in the world of adaptations, or is it worthwhile to take a canonical risk? Also, did Sara Paxton essentially inspire the mermaid hair trend of the 2010s? All this and more in this installment of the Mermaid Movie Club podcast!
