    Resilience is a powerful trait that can help individuals overcome challenges and obstacles in life. When combined with a desire to make a positive impact on society, resilience can drive a person to become a social change maker. A resilient woman is someone who is able to bounce back from adversity and persevere in the face of obstacles. This can be a valuable trait for anyone, but it is especially important for women, who often face unique challenges and barriers to success. To become a social change maker, a resilient woman must first identify the issues she is passionate about and wants to address. This could include a wide range of topics, such as gender equality, racial justice, environmental sustainability, or any other cause that she feels strongly about. Over time, the resilient woman's efforts may begin to bear fruit. She may see changes in her community, or even on a larger scale. Through her work, she can inspire others to take action and create positive change as well. In conclusion, resilience can be a powerful force for good in the world. By harnessing this trait and using it to drive positive social change, a resilient woman can make a lasting impact on her community and beyond.

    Huyền Tôn Nữ Cát Tường

    Ms. Huyền Tôn Nữ Cát Tường is currently the Managing Director and Co-founder of VietSeeds Foundation. Established in 2011, it has been the first scholarship foundation for students operating in all 3 main regions of Vietnam which are Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh city. In 2015, after over 10 years working in the business environment with multinational corporations (such as IBC Asia, Massimo Zanetti, Infonam, etc), Cat Tuong had decided to change her direction—from a simple businesswoman into an inspiring leader who wholeheartedly committed her full attention to the development and the expansion of VietSeeds. Under her leadership, VietSeeds had been gradually growing from a charity organization created by a small group of friends into a professional non-profit foundation with a team of full-time staffs operating alongside long-term volunteers, providing more than 400 scholarships every year to students across the country for them to be able to pursue their dreams—in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh city. Throughout the journey of more than 10 years since the beginning of VietSeeds, Cát Tường has been working relentlessly to accompany the organization in order to diversify its operation scope. Moreover, with her guidance, VietSeeds had succeeded in getting important partnerships with international institutions such as HSBC, Temasek, Fulbright University, etc. Therefore, the organization's mission would become more viral, spreading out the "Empowering social change-maker generation" spirit and the positive values to communities in Vietnam.

    In the summer of 2017, during a vacation with my children, I met a veteran by chance. I was stunned with what he told. The war has been long past, but the pains remain. From this veteran's story and those of some others, I have decided to meet with many witnesses of the history, to write down their experiences into books by subject. In this presentation, I want to tell about my journey of these writings, the difficulties and advantages, as well as my wants.

    I was born in 1960 when a large part of the globe was reviving after the second World War and when the Vietnamese were still proudly holding their heads high in the echoes of the Dien Bien Phu victory. I spent my childhood in the war between Vietnam and the United States and witnessed the end of that longest war of the 20th century, which ended with my country's reunification. I am also a witness to great efforts to realise the socialist ideal not only in Vietnam but in the Soviet Union as well as their transition periods. I could have lived like most people of my generation—the transitional generation. I can stay as a government official with a life-time employment. But I chose another path. I left the state institution to start an NGO, institution that has to, in the context of Viet Nam, constantly struggle for its legitimacy and voice. I could have peacefully lived the life of a woman who adhered to traditional values, but I have become a feminist, fighting for women's rights and gender equality. My life has not been easy, but it is an exciting and meaningful life. I can proudly say that it has been a journey of constant commitments and creativity.

    Khuất Thu Hồng

    Khuất Thu Hồng is the Founder and Director of the Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS), an independent research organisation in Hanoi, Vietnam. She got her BA in Psychology in 1984 and earned her PhD in Sociology in 1997. Hong works on gender, sexuality, and social inclusion of vulnerable populations. Hong is also a social activist and advocate for gender equality and social inclusion. She is a regular guest on national and international televisions and radios and is often interviewed by newspapers on gender and social development issues in Viet Nam.

    Colloque - Femmes vietnamiennes : créativité et engagement : Ba Trieu's 21st Century Daughters. A Non-Vietnamese' Discovery of the Remarkable Women of Vietnam

    10 years ago I started my personal journey of discovery that led me from huge admiration for the remarkable women of Vietnam to realising the constant pressures many of them face to be 'perfect', and finally, to being challenged to become part of the solution and to contribute to sparking change and more gender equality. I'd like to introduce you to some of these remarkable women's stories I captured in my book and in my events. I named them Ba Trieu's 21st Century Daughters, as for me, they carry the warrior spirit of Ba (or Lady) Trieu, the woman warrior of the 3rd century in Vietnam into Modern Vietnam. Ba Trieu famously fought the external force of the Chinese occupation as well as the internal suppressor, the patriarchy, when she famously declared: "I will not resign myself to the lot of women who bow their heads and become concubines. I wish to ride the tempest, tame the waves, and kill the sharks in the Eastern seas. I have no desire to live the life of a concubine".

    Irene Öhler

    Irene is a highly experienced, certified global executive coach and international facilitator, with more than 25 years' experience working on 4 continents with leaders from the corporate and government sectors.

    Irene has been based in Vietnam since 2012 and has since become a sought-after expert for her work to promote women leadership. Irene has pioneered a number of initiatives to inspire women to connect and lead: she co-authored an awarded and bestselling book on Vietnamese women leaders, Ba Trieu's 21st Century Daughters. Stories of Remarkable Vietnamese Women, founded the Women's Storytelling Salon, an intercultural and inter-generational events series, in 2014, which runs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and created SPARK! CONNECTION, an ecosystem for women leadership development under her brand Lightpath Leadership – www.lightpathgroupleadership.com.

    As part of the SPARK! CONNECTION ecosystem Irene offers two women leadership development programs: SPARK! - A 1.5 day energiser to ignite the spark of leadership, and IGNITE!, A comprehensive online coaching program with the power of a community.

    Irene also consulted to the Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City to organise Vietnam's first Women's and Gender Conferences, and to write a Landscaping document on 'advancing gender equality in Vietnam', and the CEO Brief to Promote Inclusive Leadership and Gender Equality in Vietnam.

    She's also been a consultant and coach to 4 years' of the 10-month Women In Leadership Journey program for Vietnamese government officials sponsored by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, implemented by Flinders University.

    Études de genre dans les universités de Ho Chi Minh Ville : du projet pilote au développement durable. Avec l'établissement du Département des Études sur la femme au sein de l'Université Ouverte de Ho Chi Minh Ville en 1992, la formation en genre fut officiellement introduite dans le cursus universitaire. Malgré des difficultés qui sont la réticence des décideurs dans l'éducation, les préjugés et malentendu de la part de la société et des employeurs à l'égard de la discipline, la réticence de la part des étudiants qui sont très concernés par les débouchés d'emploi, l'insuffisance de recherches sur les spécificités de genre au Vietnam. Depuis l'an 2000, le cours de sociologie de genre fait partie des cours obligatoires dans le programme national de licence de sociologie. Après trente ans d'existence à l'université, les études de genre connaissent une développement relativement durable seulement dans les filières de sociologie.

    Docteure du troisième cycle de Géographie, ancienne responsable du Département des Études sur la femme à l'Université Ouverte de Ho Chi Minh Ville. Parallèlement à l'enseignement, j'ai réalisé des recherches sur la situation des femmes vietnamiennes, sur les problèmes sociaux des villes du Viet Nam. Retraitée depuis 2017.

    Nguyen was born and grew up during the final years of the Vietnam War. Her house was burned down during the war and her family lost everything. Her mother was struggled to raise 5 kids alone. Nguyen and her siblings grew up in small villages in Vietnam without electricity for 16 years and they lacked of basic needs such as foods, clothes, drinking water, etc. She was raised to become a housewife and a mother. She immigrated to the United States (US) at the age of 21 years old with a few words of English and no money. She faced discrimination in the village for being poor and in the United States for being an immigrant. The more challenges she faced, the harder she tried. She used every setback and hurdle as a motivation to move forward. Within 10 years arriving to the US, Nguyen got a PhD from UCLA in Physical Chemistry. In this presentation, she will discuss her journey from a village girl to the US National Academy of Engineering member, how her role has changed from a housewife to the world top scientist, and how she uses her voice and influence to advocate for women in science and engineering.

    Thuc Quyen Nguyen

    Thuc Quyen Nguyen is the director of the Center for Polymers and Organic Solids and professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Recognition for her research includes Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award, Alfred Sloan Research Fellow, NSF American Competitiveness and Innovation Fellow, Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Award, Royal Society of Chemistry Fellow, Hall of Fame - Advanced Materials, Beaufort Visiting Scholar, St John's College, Cambridge University, 2015-2019 World's Most Influential Scientific Minds; Top 1 % Highly Cited Researchers in Materials Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, Wilhelm Exner Medal, and Elected Member of the National Academy of Engineering.

    An article about how Vietnam's history and culture have impacted women's development, taking the author's family members as a case study, could explore Vietnam's long history of gender inequality, and how this has affected women's opportunities and rights. It could look at the traditional roles of women in Vietnam, and how they have been affected by the wars, colonization and modernization that the country has gone through. Additionally, the article could explore how women's rights have evolved over time, and what challenges remain in the modern day. It could also look at how Vietnam's culture and history have affected specific women in the case study, and how they have navigated the challenges they have faced. Finally, the article could look at how women in Vietnam are making progress and pushing for further improvements in their rights and opportunities.

    Nguyễn Hoàng Ánh (PhD) is an Associate Professor of FPT School of Business and Technology (FSB). She is expertise in International Trade, International Business, CSR and Gender in Business. She is al so visiting lecturer and visiting researcher in Copenhagen University, Seoul National University, HEC in Montreal Canada, ETH Zurich Switzerland, ESCAP UN in Bangkok and Sheffield University, UK. Her research and expertise are in business culture, business ethics, CSR, crosscultural management and gender in entrepreneurship with more than 40 publications both nationally and internationally. In Vietnam, she is popular as an activist for social reform & gender equality movements.

    Globalization and artistic advancement in Vietnam have increased the demand for theater innovation to reflect audience preferences and current international theater trends. Young women who have received training in theater and the arts abroad and who use contemporary theater models to reform the language of Vietnamese theater have made a significant contribution to the innovation of contemporary theater in Vietnam. This presentation shares four cutting-edge theater models in Vietnam that depend on the dedication of four groups of women:

    Post-dramatic/Experimental Theater: "The Run Project" under director Nguyen Bich Tra practices post-dramatic and experimental theater.

    Community Theater and Dialogue: Director Le An's "Saigon Theatreland" group discusses women's issues through theater.

    Improvisational theater: "Saigon Improv House" under director Van Tran brings theater to people to help them reach their full potential.

    Traditional Theater Reforms: Director Dao Le Na's "YUME Art Project" uses contemporary artistic language to make traditional theater accessible to young audiences while preserving it.

    Đào Lê Na

    Lê Na Đào, Ph.D in Literary Theory and Criticism. She is a senior lecturer in Faculty of Literature, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City. She was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar in the US for the academic year 2021-2022. Her teaching activities are Creative writing, Introduction to film studies, Screenwriting, Enjoying and Creating Short Stories, and Introduction to Art Studies. Her research orientation: Film studies, Arts studies, Adaptation studies, and Vietnamese Culture. She has published many journal articles and books in Vietnam. She is also a novelist and scriptwriter and theatrical director.

    At the age of 32, I became the editor in chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper, one of the largest ones in Vietnam, regarding tirage and ranking. After 8 years of working as a reporter, I was forced to leave because of my dissenting views on the struggle and social construction, and the same implicit policy, prohibiting continuing journalism. I switched to doing trade promotion and support for businesses. The work has no professional expertise.

    I participated to create a new type of newspaper: consulting newspaper, consumer centric (Saigon Marketing newspaper) in 1996. And set up a program to support enterprises to conquer consumers based on product quality. Since then, the High Quality Vietnamese Goods Business Association (HQVGBA) has been established and I was chair woman the Association so far.

    Building a development link network between Mekong Delta provinces (Forum and Mekong Connect network have been ongoing for 8 years).

    Until now, I still work and continue to take advantage of social networks to communicate and promote Vietnamese goods and Vietnamese businesses.

    VU Kim Hanh

    One of the most well-respected journalist and business promoter in Vietnam, Ms. Kim Hanh was the youngest editor-in-chief (at the age of 32) of Tuoi Tre, the most popular and influential newspaper in the nation. She has been doing her best in supporting Vietnamese companies from 1996 by setting up a program to help businesses convince consumers by focusing on their product quality. That program grew and established the High Quality Vietnamese Goods Business Association (HQVGBA) for helping them improving competitiveness, enhancing production and going global. She is the chair woman of that Association from 2015, then and now.

    I want to tell about the journey of 21 years of writing books and 16 years of living independently in a big city of Vietnam. With 21 years of writing, I have published 5 books. In addition, I am also an independent social activist with the outstanding project of bringing my fourth work called: "Believe in Kindness" to give to inmates. The project started at the end of 2018 and has now reached 19 prisons across Vietnam. 16 years of independent living in HCM City, when I was a woman who could not walk on her own, pronunciation was very difficult. However, with my steadfastness and unceasing efforts, so far, people have called me by the nickname "Six-legged Angel". I travel around Vietnam alone to spread life motivation to many different audiences. Above are the main topics I want to present in the upcoming workshop with Mrs. Bui Tran Phuong.

    Tran Thi Tra My

    Trần Thị Trà My was born into a poor family in Central Vietnam. At three months old, she had a health problem and was taken to the hospital by her family for surgery. She had been clinically dead for 8 hours in the morgue, thereby suffering damage to the motor nervous system and speech function. At the age of 10, she learned letters from her sister, at the age of 14 she knew how to compose poetry, at the age of 16 she started writing books and at the age of 21 she moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live independently. At 23 years old, she published her first book. Currently, she has published 5 books.

    Bilan, enjeux et perspectives

    Cette leçon finale réfléchit sur les futurs défis des jeunes générations de femmes dans une société apparemment homogène, voire stagnante sous certains aspects et en même temps en transformation rapide et très plurielle : non pas une tradition uniformisée comme on le prétend souvent, mais des traditions d'origines sinisée, sud-est asiatique, et diversement autochtones ; entre l'attachement aux valeurs traditionnelles et une modernité prometteuse de liberté, d'égalité, d'individualisme, de dignité, de développement compétitif et de coopération pour un monde meilleur, mais aussi intensément éprouvante et pleine d'incertitude. Nous resituerons cette évolution dans des contextes contradictoires : guerres et après-guerre, socialisme et capitalisme, isolement et ouverture, pauvreté et pénurie et développement économique à marche forcée, avec l'apparition de nouvelles technologies à la fois libéralisatrices et normatives.

    Ce cours est consacré essentiellement aux Vietnamien(nes) de la diaspora extrêmement diverse, allant de l'Europe et de la Russie / Europe de l'Est, à l'Amérique du Nord et l'Australie, et passant par des pays de l'Asie (Corée, Japon, Philippines, Taïwan, Singapour…) jusqu'en Afrique. Les circulations et échanges importants entre le Việt Nam et les diasporas, où les femmes sont particulièrement nombreuses, contribuent à faire des élites vietnamiennes une des plus diverses de la région Asie du Sud-Est. À travers la production scientifique, philosophique, journalistique, littéraire et artistique de la diaspora féminine vietnamienne, j'analyserai essentiellement la partie accessible au public vietnamien du Việt Nam, y compris via Internet. Cette leçon ne se limitera pas cependant aux perceptions vietnamiennes à l'intérieur du pays, mais cherchera, dans la mesure du possible, à multiplier les perspectives comparatistes et des regards croisés, y compris avec d'autres pays de la région. Une attention particulière sera portée à la jeunesse féminine et aux défis auxquels elle est confrontée.

    Être femmes au Việt Nam au XXIe siècle

    À partir de sources aussi variées que la littérature, les arts, les médias et nouveaux médias (réseaux sociaux, YouTube, etc.), j'analyserai dans cette leçon les discours, activités et représentations des femmes dans la société vietnamienne d'aujourd'hui. Les décalages entre générations, les tiraillements entre valeurs (prétendues) traditionnelles, révolutionnaires et individualistes, le poids des réalités quotidiennes et les aspirations à la liberté et à l'égalité face aux injonctions de genre qui pèsent sur les filles, les femmes et les mères, les pressions de l'ouverture au capitalisme sauvage, de la mondialisation qui conduisent de nombreuses femmes à des migrations de travail dans des conditions d'esclavage moderne. Entre les valeurs humanistes d'une part et les tenailles du totalitarisme et de la toute-puissante économie de marché d'autre part, la voie de l'engagement dans la société civile sera développée.

    Femmes, guerres et idéologies (1945-1975)

    La longue période de guerres qu'a connue le Việt Nam (occupation japonaise, guerre coloniale, guerre entre les deux Việt Nam) pendant plus de trente ans a eu un impact très lourd sur toute la société, sur toutes les femmes, au nord comme au sud, au front comme à l'arrière. Cette leçon traite, à travers de nombreux témoignages de femmes, de la gestion de la vie quotidienne en temps de guerre dans un contexte de pénurie chronique et de violence extrême sur le moment et dans la durée (agent orange), mais également des choix révolutionnaires impliquant la lutte armée : femmes militantes et combattantes, témoins et/ou victimes, ou au contraire la volonté d'échapper au choix. J'aborderai également les identités niées, volées, emprisonnées, figées ou en question et en reconstruction permanente ainsi qu'une approche postcoloniale de la réalité familiale et de celle d'être une fille, une femme, une mère en contexte de guerres et de révolutions pas seulement politico-militaires, mais aussi de révolutions des mœurs (comportements individuels, relations hommes-femmes) à travers l'analyse de sources littéraires et visuelles.

    Femmes et politique, 1918-1945 : Activisme anticolonialiste et moderniste

    Dans cette leçon, je décrirai, d'une part, une nouvelle génération de femmes militantes nationalistes, communistes ou sympathisantes issues de milieux sociaux divers, qui s'engagent dans la lutte pour l'indépendance du Việt Nam. D'autre part, j'évoquerai l'émergence d'une minorité de femmes intellectuelles et modernes : femmes diplômées, enseignantes, médecins, sages-femmes ; femmes de lettres, écrivaines, poétesses, journalistes, éditrices. Combattantes anticolonialistes, intellectuelles exerçant leur profession, ou épouses d'intellectuels, elles sont toutes impliquées dans des questionnements identitaires entre traditions et modernité et s'affirment de diverses manières. J'examinerai également le discours des hommes sur les femmes, allant d'un soutien aux idées féministes, voire d'une promotion chaleureuse de ces idées à leur refus au nom de la sauvegarde des valeurs traditionnelles. Le féminisme vietnamien, dans ses différentes variantes et tendances, s'est résolument rangé du côté moderniste et anticolonialiste et en a tiré sa force de mobilisation des femmes comme d'autres acteurs influents. Il n'en a pas perdu son identité propre et ne s'est pas moins concentré sur ses objectifs spécifiquement féministes.

    Femmes, modernité et féminisme, 1918-1945 : Éducation, presse et féminisme

    La domination coloniale française sur le Việt Nam entraîne des transformations économiques et sociales majeures au début du XXe siècle. Aux échanges économiques avec la métropole s'ajoutent des circulations d'idées, de techniques et de culture matérielle venant d'Occident. Avec la fin, en 1918, des concours mandarinaux qui produisaient les élites exclusivement masculines, les filles accèdent à l'instruction publique franco-vietnamienne et aux réseaux d'écoles privées et catholiques et pour une poignée, aux universités françaises. Cette leçon analyse comment les femmes se sont emparées du concept de modernité, s'interrogeant sur leur identité de femme, explorant de nouveaux rapports de genre dans le couple et dans la famille. J'évoquerai la première vague du féminisme vietnamien, à travers notamment l'émergence d'une presse militante (Nữ giới chung/Son de cloche du genre féminin, Phụ Nữ Tân Văn/Gazette des femmes, Đàn bà mới/Femmes nouvelles) et l'accès d'une minorité de femmes à de nouveaux métiers. Les femmes participent aussi activement à de nouveaux espaces de création artistique : littérature en quốc ngữ, poésie nouvelle, peinture, théâtre moderne et rénové (kịch nói, cải lương).
