This is a preview of my upcoming review of the Lung Trainer, a familiar looking device with a heavy weight twist on how to help student musicians build proper breath support and control on their instrument. I saw this at the Midwest Clinic in December and bought one on the spot to use in my beginning band classroom.

I have been wanting a set of these for years and finally decided to do it while visiting their booth at the 2017 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. The story of how people conceive of and create custom instruments for use by disabled musicians and students is a very inspiring one. I am working on a big story about it for an upcoming issue of Teaching Music but the interview I did today blew my mind to the point I had to talk a little bit about it right now while it was all fresh in my mind. If you are interested in more on this topic be sure to read the article in the upcoming April 2017 issue of Teaching Music Magazine.

NAfME's new standards for music education lend themselves to lots of creative projects and ways to assess student learning in the music classroom. The Model Cornerstone Assessments are NAfME's way to help guide teachers towards best practices and ways to assess that learning and serve as a guide for teachers to create their own. Check out the MCA website to see all the examples:

Is marching band a sport or not? We take the dictionary definition of what a sport is and apply the three criteria to what a marching band really does. We've got some interesting research papers on the topic and a cool video as well that shows just how physical marching band can really get. But is it a sport? There is more to it than just the physical activity and we go into those areas as well.

This month we welcome Andy Zweibel as guest host for the Music Ed Monthly Podcast. Andy recently presented a session at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic on the topic of social media and other organization apps that are of use to band, choir, and orchestra directors and he recaps that session here on the podcast. Also included is the news of the week and new tech gadgets coming down the pipe.
Also, my apologies in advance for the slight echo on Andy's audio. We couldn't hear it during the recording session and only noticed it after we had finished. -

The Yamaha SILENT Brass system is a practice mute and belt pack combo that allows you to practice your brass instrument at full volume without disturbing those around you. At the same time though you can hear yourself playing as if the mute wasn't even there. It's a really cool piece of music technology and is available for all brass instruments from trumpet down to tuba.
