  • Covering wildfires for news is a dangerous proposition, and it has become a lot more dangerous every year. And if it’s dangerous for the news crew, it’s also dangerous for the first responders. Wildfires in the west have increased in intensity for the past two decades.
Our guests on this podcast are Mark Neveau and Tim Walton. Mark has over 40 years of public safety experience as a San Francisco Bay Area Fire Department Battalion Chief out of Fremont, California. He has responded to some of our nation’s most significant disasters as a Federal Coordinating Officer working with the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition, Mark was a Presidential appointed Federal Coordinating Officer for over 12 disaster/emergency declarations in multiple states and tribal territories in his career. Tim is a long-time freelance lighting cameraman for NBC News, and he is a contributing CalFire photographer with unfettered access to any wildfire incident in the State of California.

In this podcast, we help network crew members understand fire behavior, how to stay safe covering fires, and how California Laws help the partnership between media and the government distribute disaster information.
