Do you sometimes think that if only you were in a different location, or even a different country, there’d be more opportunities for you in your vet career?
What if I told you that your location might not be the barrier you think it is?
Many vets feel trapped by their geographical location, believing it limits their career opportunities. You might think moving to a new location will magically solve your career woes.
But what if the key to a fulfilling veterinary career lies not in the 'where' but in the 'how' and 'what' of your work?
Location is Not the Limiting Factor in Your Career You Think It Is.
In today’s episode, you’re going to find out why.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
Why location is not the limiting factor you think it is.The three main things you need in a job in order to experience a fulfilling veterinary career - no matter where you live.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Take a Small Risk
Take a social risk, by striking up a conversation with a stranger, more specifically, reach out to people in areas that interest you, both locally and in the wider region.
Take an intellectual risk. Try something new, a problem you haven’t tackled before. Maybe by doing a surgery out of your comfort zone, taking up a new responsibility at work, or learning a new skill in your free time.
Take an emotional risk. Tell someone you care about how you feel. It might be as simple as sending a message to an industry or government vet to say how grateful you were to receive their support.

You’re a vet considering alternative options for your veterinary career.
You’re finding yourself exhausted at the end of each day of work, with barely enough energy to cook dinner, let alone the energy for hobbies and those closest to you.
You’re stressed, you’re lacking confidence in your decisions, and your mental health is suffering as a result.
You’re wondering, is this it?
How do you find an alternative option for your career, when all you’ve ever done is be a vet?
You are what you do every day, and if what you do every day is non-stop filled with being a vet, it’s very difficult to look in the mirror and not only see a vet.
And the problem with that is, if you combine that with a downward spiral of lack of energy, stress, and reduced happiness, it leads to you considering leaving clinical practice, but they’re paying you too much for you to leave.
But what if there ARE not only alternatives for your veterinary career, but a realistic path to get there?
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
How to identify your transferable skills from your veterinary careerHow to mind-map alternative options for your veterinary careerAnd a secret ingredient that will turn your skills and career alternatives into genuine job opportunities-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Complete the Next Step Vet Alternative Career Options Worksheet.

Do you often find yourself overworking and struggling to say 'no' in your veterinary career?
You're not alone.
Many vets face this challenge, but what's really behind our drive to constantly push beyond our limits?
Pain:
You're clocking in extra hours, taking on more than you can handle, and yet, you're left wondering why it's so hard to establish healthy work boundaries.
We’re our worst enemies.
Intrigue:
Why do you struggle with setting boundaries, and how can establishing them change your professional life?
-
Our guest this week: Dr. Marie Holowaychuk (Reviving Vet Med)
She achieved the definition of success as a vet, becoming a specialist in critical care, before burning out.
She decided that changing her job description would fix the problem, becoming a locum vet as well as doing a list of things that are too long to list here. She’s one of those particularly high-achieving vets that is on boards, writes in journals and presents at conferences.
But of course, this inevitably led to further burnout.
It is now her mission to increase awareness about mental health and well-being in the vet profession - through her company Reviving Vet Medicine.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
Why we, as vets, often fall into the trap of perfectionism and overworking. The crucial factors to consider before setting boundaries in your workplace. And I’ll give you one simple challenge you can do today to help identify YOUR boundaries.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Quick Values Discovery Using AI
As mentioned earlier in the episode, if you want to set boundaries in your life, you first need to understand your values. While this is something we go through in great detail in the Next Step Vet Career Accelerator, a quick version of this is to use AI to help you.
Write down 20 or so words that are important to you in your work and your life. Go through this list and highlight no more than 10 words that resonate the most with you. Then, go on to ChatGPT, and ask it to summarise your 10 words into 4 core values. If you don’t feel ChatGPT has got this right, ask it to retry, or even emphasise words that are most important to you.

#. Episode Title With Episode Number at the Start CAPTURE ATTENTION
It’s a new year, and like many people, you’ve probably set a list of resolutions aimed at improving your life and career.
But what if I told you that these resolutions alone won't bring the change you're seeking in your veterinary career?
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
The common pitfalls of New Year's resolutions.Strategies to set career goals that are genuinely achievable and fulfilling. How to maintain momentum and adapt as the year progresses.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: A Daily Check-In
If you’ve made a goal for the year that is SMART, it’s still likely going to be a big goal. We need to break this down into very small micro-goals.
How?
Each day, while taking into account your bigger goal, first, consider whether anything significant has changed between today and your last daily check in, THEN write down 3 priorities for the day.
If the task takes less than 2 minutes, do it right now.
So for example, if your bigger goal is “Create a better work-life balance”, it’s too vague and you will not achieve that today, but you could write down and DO,
Define SPECIFICALLY what work life balance means to me and write a SMART goal for 2024.Write down and discuss with those closest to me, what are my non-negotiablesContact the boss to discuss a change in work schedule.A daily check-in will allow you to take little nibbles at a bigger, seemingly undefinable, goal.

In today’s episode, you’re going to find out how.
Is having work-life balance achievable?
Is it realistic as a veterinary professional?
What does work-life balance even mean to me?
These are likely questions you have had, running through your head.
Today, you’re going to hear an episode of my old podcast, Escape the Nine to Five, where I talked about the same issues you're facing, only to a wider range of working professionals.
-
Our guest this week: Nigel Marsh (TED Speaker & Author)
Nigel is an advertising executive who lost his job with four young kids and decided to remain unemployed for a year to spend time with his family and figure out what work-life balance meant to him.
He's also done a wildly popular Ted talk on work-life balance, authored multiple books including: “Fat 40 and Fired”, hosts his own podcast, and speaks around the world about his experience, including at veterinary conferences.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
What time frame to measure work-life balanceWhy you can’t take the world’s problems on your shouldersHow to make change in your career, even if you’re scared of making change.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Define What Work-Life Balance Means to You.
Privately ask yourself, honestly, what type of person do I want to be? What type of life do I want to lead? What type of legacy do I want to leave ?
Then ask:
What type of person am I?
What type of life am I leading?
What type of legacy will I leave, if I carry on this way?
Identify if there is a gap between those two things and finally ask yourself:
Am I going to do anything about the gap?
As Nigel says, decide don't slide.
And remember if you want to do anything about the gap, but are scared of making change, start small.
Even if it's just one small thing a month over time, you will head in the right direction.

Have you ever wondered why some vets seem to go on to have exciting and diverse careers, and yet you’ve yet to discover one for yourself?
It’s almost like they’ve got a secret ingredient, and they’re not sharing it with you.
And this secret ingredient could give you the upper hand in your vet career, and create opportunities you NEVER knew existed.
What is this secret ingredient?
In today’s episode, you’re going to find out.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
What the secret ingredient is.Why it will create opportunities in your veterinary career you never knew existed. How to use it in a way that maximises the benefit to you.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Participate in an Existing Network.
Whether your dream career is becoming a clinic manager or a conservationist, chances are, there will be physical and virtual networks that already exist that you can get involved in. Participating in existing networks allows you to explore career options with people who are ALREADY living and breathing it.
It is also an environment with less pressure than a job interview, so you’ll probably find people are more honest about the pros and cons of a company or industry than they might be in more formal situations. The best way to explore future career possibilities is with a curious and open mindset.
Find out where people who are interested in the same career opportunities as you hang out. Are there online forums you could contribute to, speaker events you could attend or experts you could follow on LinkedIn?
Once you start being proactive and taking action you will find that one thing leads to another and in a relatively short space of time you can make a lot of progress in building a network of people who will help you with future roles.
The best advice I can give within these networks is to offer to help someone in an area that interests you. Networking is just people helping people, and so the more people you seek to help, the more opportunities you will be creating for yourself.
So this week, Participate in an Existing Network.

You’re a vet.
And you’re considering making a changes in your career, but finances are holding you back.
You would far rather be doing another role that is meaningful to you and doesn’t drain you of energy, but the truth is, your vet job is paying you comfortably.
Maybe not as much as you think you deserve, but you can survive on it. And you might even have people who rely on your income too.
How can you even consider a career change, when you’ve got bills to pay?
No one’s paying you to retrain and you can’t cut your hours in half to pursue other options on the side.
How can you avoid letting finances hold you back in your veterinary career?
In this episode, you’re going to find out how.
-
Our guest this week: Meredith Jones (Veterinarian turned Financial Planner)

You're a veterinarian and you're stuck.
You're in a job you're not entirely enjoying and you're coming home from work drained of energy.
You went into this profession because of an interest in science, a love of animals and nature, but if there's any passion in this current job, it's whining.
Being a vet is supposed to be a dream job, so why are you unhappy?
If you stay in your current position, you'll likely end up living a life of regret.
Wondering, "What if?"
What if I had changed jobs?
What if I had tried something new?
What if I even considered, changing careers?
How do you avoid living a life of regret?
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
One of the most likely regrets you'll have about your career when you reached the end of your life. How you can live a life true to yourself, not what others expect of you. Why you'll regret working too hard.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Fear Setting
There’s something you want to do. Maybe you want to try something out of your comfort zone. Maybe you want to quit your job. Or maybe you just want to have a conversation with your manager and make some small, but realistic changes to your job description.
What’s getting in the way? Fear.
Introducing: Fear Setting.
Based on Tim Ferris’ advice, he recommends:
Define:
List out everything you fear about the idea of taking action.
Prevent:
List ways you could reduce the likelihood of each of the worst-case scenarios from happening
Repair:
List the ways you could repair the damage if the worst came to worst.
Benefits:
Write down all the positive benefits of even an attempt or partial success at taking action.
Consequences:
Consider all the consequences of inaction including financial, emotional, and physical. It can be helpful to look at both the short-term AND long-term consequences.
Action:
Finally, write down the action you will take TODAY, to take action in SPITE of fear.

You’re a clinical vet.
They said it would be a “dream job”.
Any yet:
The work is unrewarding.
Your clients are demanding.
And you’re reaching the end of your days drained of energy.
You NEED to take action in your career, but you’re not even sure where to start.
You think about changing jobs after YET another exhausting day of work, might look up jobs online, or join groups on social media that give career tips, but then maybe you get distracted.
You watch a funny video on social media, and before you know it, that thought was forgotten, and another day has passed.
Another day stuck in a job leaving you little energy for anything else.
How DO you take action in your career?
In this episode, you’ll learn how
-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Rocket Ship Countdown
Do you know that countdown that goes off whenever a rocket ship is about to launch?
Whenever you consider taking action, what you’ll normally do is ponder options, daydream, get distracted, and possibly do nothing.
Anytime you consider taking action, instead of thinking about it. Do it.
How?
Next time you’re thinking about taking action in your career, imagine the rocket ship countdown going off in your head.
When you reach one, do something. It’s an effective way to take action. You won’t always get it RIGHT, and it is still helpful to seek guidance from a career coach like myself, but doing SOMEthing is ALWAYS better than nothing.

You're a vet considering making changes in your career.
Deep down you know you need to change jobs or even careers. But you might be lacking the confidence to actually make change.
You don't really know what other career options are out there, especially close to where you live, and finances are probably holding you back too.
How do you gain the confidence to make change in your career, when you don't even know where to start?
-
Our guest this week: Julie Cappel (veterinarian and life coach)
Julie is a clinical vet, who has had the confidence to branch out, becoming an author, speaker, as well as hosting her own podcast. She's also a certified life coach.
Confidence is something she aims to instil in her clients.
And today she's going to help you.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
Why it's normal to lack confidence in some areas of your life. What do you need to focus on, if you're going to improve your confidence. Why doing the inner work will help you avoid making the same mistakes (again and again) in your career. And I'll give you one simple step you can do today, to help you improve your confidence.
-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Practice Confidence
Confidence is something that is earned.
Practice it.
There are three easy ways you can practice confidence.
In the same way you might practice a speech, if you're going to be having a challenging conversation with a colleague or boss, rehearse it. Rehearse out loud. What you're actually going to say, at least three times before you actually say it. Practice little and often. Spot opportunities to practice in low-risk situations.Help people with their confidence. There are areas of your work where you're more experienced than others. Helping others build their confidence in thee areas will help you build confidence in yourself.-

At work, do you feel like you’re not expressing your whole self?
In the veterinary clinic, there’s likely aspects of what you do that you’re good at, but you feel like there’s large parts of who you are, that have to get left home at work.
What if there is a way you can find work better suited to your strengths?
In this episode, you’re going to find out how.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
Why identifying your strengths matters. How to know what types of work are best suited to your strengthsHow to trial jobs that interest you, without having to commit prior to knowing what the job is actually like.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Change Your Job Description.
Under the assumption you’ve listened to our previous episode and identified your strengths, a simple achievable step you can take today is to implement your strengths in your current job. Tell your manager a strength of yours you’d like to use more of at work, and ask how you can add this to you role. This will not only help you enjoy your current job, but help you prove you’re living your strengths when future job opportunities arise.

Chances I you've gone to veterinary school, got a very respectable degree and job and yet aren't satisfied in your current career.
Something needs to change.
So many vets have doubts about their careers.
How do we find meaningful work while still paying the bills?
In order to design a career that works for you, you need to identify your strengths.
You probably have some idea what your strengths are, but maybe find it hard to put into words. We're going to show you how you can use your strengths to find a perfect job.
There is a proven assessment by Gallup to help you.
Based on years of research and completed by over 30 million people. The CliftonStrengths Assessment is a game changer for helping you hone in on your unique strengths.
-
Our guests this week:
Jim Collison, CliftonStrengths Community Manager.Saurav Atri, Executive Leadership Coach. If you want to hear from people who understand strengths and how to use them, these two use CliftonStrengths on a daily basis.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
What the CliftonStrength Assessment is and how it works. Why you need to figure out exactly what's making you unhappy at work in order to make change. How discovering your strengths will transform your career.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Identify Your Strengths
Google CliftonStrengths and complete the full CliftonStrengths Assessment. Then, once you have your results, write down three types of work that you could do for each of your top five strengths. Highlight any common themes. This might give you a clue as to the sort of work you could be doing.

You're wanting to make change in your life, but there's a few barriers to making change.
There's a level of comfort in being a clinical vet. You mostly know what you're doing, it pays you comfortably, and you have friends in the industry.
But imagine doing this job for another 30 years?
Imagine a day of work is one page in the story of the rest of your life.
You're coming home from work tired.
The work is often unrewarding.
And you're being drained of energy.
Do you really want to fill the pages and the story of your life, with hundreds, if not thousands of more days like this?
Today, as we continue to design a career that works for you, we're going to have a very short recap episode on why journaling is so important.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
How is journaling going to help, and why is it such an important first step in designing a career that works for you.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Start a Gratitude Journal.
In the same journal as your Emotions Journal, write down one thing you're grateful for, each and every day. Aim to journal something you're genuinely grateful for that particular day. Not something you feel you "should" be grateful for, such as a roof over your head or good health.
Research has shown that people who count their blessings, tend to be happier and less depressed. Gratitude takes time, but will improve your health your relationships, and increase your resilience. All important foundations for designing a career that works for you.

In Veterinary School, we're taught to focus on preventative medicine - NOT being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.
But how do you use the same thinking to approach your career?
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
How to reframe your approach to your career. Why you need to regularly measure key indicators of success in your life. How mentorship can help.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Complete a Life Design Assessment.
Based on the book, "Designing Your Life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, the Life Design Assessment measures four key areas of any person's life.
Health. Work. Play. Love.Like the dashboard on your car. The Life Design Assessment is a good measuring point for the state of your life, right now.
Give each area of your life, a score from 1 being empty, to 4 being full. I recommend doing this every month to keep track of how well your life is going.

You're a vet considering a change of career.
But how can you do this without losing your identity as a veterinarian?
How do you handle the change in career, without a change in identity?
Overcoming the expectations - and maybe even disappointment - of family and friends.
Where will you fit in when you're no longer a clinical vet?
-
Our guest this week: Naomi Mellor (equine vet turned professional podcaster)
Naomi took an unusual turn in her career as a vet, going from a respectable job as an equine vet in the racing industry, to a relatively obscure and less prestigious profession.
For someone who had always wanted to be a vet her entire life. She experienced doubts at an unusual age - before she'd even gone to university.
Her parents and mentors quickly quelled that doubt. She went to vet school and ended up working for over 10 years and the equine industry, before rediscovering her passion and a completely new industry - podcasting.
She now runs the international woman's podcast awards as well as hosting her own podcast, working with Amazon, and doing the occasional bit of vet work.
But before Naomi got there, she also struggled with her identity as a veterinarian.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
What Naomi means by 'creating space' in order to figure out what you're meant to be doing next. Why networking is not a necessary evil, but something you should look forward to doing, if you're serious about changing careers. How you can change your career, without losing your identity as a veterinarian.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Create Space.
Find a way to reduce your hours at work. Ideally locum so that you're in control of your own hours.
If this isn't an option, tell your work, you need to reduce your hours.
It's your life and if you're too busy and stressed to allow the time and energy to spend on your career development you will never find the space to do it.
You've got to create space for yourself.
I would recommend reducing your hours of work by at least eight hours a week. This will allow more time for rest and relaxation and mean you can spend at least two hours a week on your career development.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem so relaxed and happy at work?
What are they doing differently to everyone else? While some people are naturally more happy than others, what if I could give you one thing to do for just 10 minutes a day?
That would increase your happiness at work by about 10%.
Would you do it?
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
How to get in a good frame of mind, so you can make the best decisions for your career. How practicing meditation for as little as 10 minutes a day can significantly improve your overall well being. An easy way to make meditation a daily habit.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Daily Meditation.
Find a time of day you think it will be most achievable for you to consistently practice meditation.
We suggest either first thing in the morning at your lunch break or just after returning home from work, but whatever time of day you choose to do it, the best way to make sure this becomes a habit - before it's even a habit - is to tie it into something you do without consciously thinking about.
Whatever you choose, the only way it's going to become a daily habit is by making it so easy to remember, it will be hard to forget.
A bonus tip, if you celebrate at the end of each meditation with a fist pump or another celebration, your brain will learn it as being rewarded for the behaviour. Within two months, this should become a habit. Much like you brush your teeth without really thinking about it.

What if there was one thing you could do right now to improve your career?
It's a simple task and it will take you less than a minute a day.
Over time it will transform your career.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
What does self awareness really mean? How improving your self awareness will help you better understand what energises and drains you at work. One simple tip for improving your self awareness at work.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Start an Emotions Journal
Purchase a journal that's calendarized, so you can write in it daily.
At the end of each day, write down three emotions that come up during the day and why those emotions come up.
Place it somewhere, you won't forget it, so it becomes a daily.
I place it on my bedside table so that when I go to bed, I won't forget it.
You might find the task a bit repetitive and maybe even wonder what you're getting out of the.
Maybe you'll start writing down the same thing, and it might start to feel like a waste of time.
But the more you do the exercise, the better you'll get at it.

You're a vet and you may be thinking, 'Am I the only veterinarian stuck in my career?'
What if the very thing you're worried about is more common than you think?
The answer will surprise you.
-
In this episode you’ll learn:
How common career doubts are in the veterinary industry. Why the decision you made to become a vet shouldn't define the rest of your life. The first step you can take to start designing a career to work for you.-
YOUR NEXT STEP: Write a success log.
In a small journal, write down at least one success from the day each and every day. Take a moment to consider why each of these things were a success. Keep this journal by your bed so it becomes a daily habit.
One of the most important parts of the career journey is going to be increasing self-awareness - by celebrating your successes, you'll be rewiring your brain to spend more energy focusing on the positive.
How will this help you in your career? By consistently celebrating success, it will become clear to you what specific things you are good at - at work - and what you enjoy doing it.
This will be helpful later on in Next Step Vet, when we start to consider future career options for you.
