  • The 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series concludes today with Part 3 of 3. The goal of the series is to inspire you to write a book.

Who is the third author in this series? It’s me (Kim Newlove, RPh/Podcast Host)! Today we’re talking about my eBook and audiobook. The title is Pharmacist Podcaster: A Podcast-Planning Guide for Pharmacy Professionals. It’s a 59-page ebook with 12 worksheets. The audiobook is 92 minutes long at 1X speed, and the introduction is included in this episode. I’ll tell you what it’s about, where you can find it, advice for pharmacist authors, and more.

I also have three guests in this episode. The first two are my publishers: Dr. Janan Sarwar and Dr. Theary Chhim from Publishing in Doses. We share a 30-minute conversation. Then, my third guest is audio engineer Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. Our conversation is about 30 minutes as well. Julie helped me with the audiobook.

  • This is my Summer 2024 update. In this audio newsletter, I update you on my business, my podcast, my family, and what I’ve been listening to, reading, watching, and playing.

    Business update

My eBook is done, and I narrated the audiobook version. I’m adding both to my online store this month. I will offer five other lead magnets this Fall. Plus, I’m starting an email newsletter.

The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast (my business podcast)

Several of my Series will continue throughout the Fall. Episode 300 should drop in October. Subscribe for all future episodes.

The Perrysburg Podcast (my local podcast)

Episode 56 comes out August 16, 2024. It’s about coffee.

    Family update

Kraig started his last year of high school. Derrick heads back to college this month. Nathan is looking forward to several fantasy football drafts. I’ve been knocking out projects, traveling, and spending time with family this summer. I also slept in a few times, went swimming, and ate ice cream.

What have I been listening to, reading, watching, and playing?

This is my favorite part. I talked about Sia, audiobooks, podcasts I, and what Kraig and I are reading. Although I watched some of the Olympics, I only talked about TV Series we have watched this summer. We didn’t play many board games this summer.

  • Welcome to part 2 of 3 in the 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series! The goal of the series is to inspire you to write your first book.

Dr. Helen Sairany is my guest. She is an expert on trauma. As we discuss her book, The We you Don’t See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma, she shares the following:

Her background as a trauma survivor Why she wrote The We you Don’t See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma What the book is about Her target audience When to read the book What she wants you to do with the information [after you read the last page] Where you can buy the book Advice for pharmacist authors

During our interview, Helen also reads two excerpts from the book.

Bio - written by Helen Sairany, PharmD (July 2024)

As a 7-year-old Kurdish child in Iraq, a country torn by war and conflict, I was spotted by a U.S. Marine deployed to my country with a grenade in my hand, who saved my life by exchanging the grenade for a bag of candy. He later escorted my family and I out of war to seek refuge in the U.S.

Because of my turbulent childhood, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2013. Thus, I aspire to live in a world where the vast majority are trauma-informed, feel psychologically safe and valued for the work they put out, and return home fulfilled.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have been open about my dormant childhood trauma. I have been traveling worldwide to give talks on topics such as trauma-informed care, leadership, and the workforce.

After having traveled to more than 100 countries worldwide, I developed an appreciation for the diverse mix of cultures, people, and traditions.

My interest in trauma stems from personal experiences of living through wars, navigating complex relationships, and continually learning what it means to be human.

  • Many pharmacists are experts in a specific area. If you are a pharmacist, and you like the idea of sharing your expertise using a podcast, you need to listen to this episode. My podcasting coach, Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting, returns to the podcast today to inspire you to start a podcast. (He was also featured in episode 79 of The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast.)

During our interview, Dave shares some success stories, benefits of podcasting, podcasting tips and tricks, advice about MP3 production, mindset advice, monetization advice, advertising advice, and more.

Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting. My affiliate link is in the show notes. Kindly use it if you sign up for The School of Podcasting. I became an affiliate because I learned how to start a podcast from Dave Jackson, and I’m good at what I do both because of Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting and 5 years of experience.

If you are looking for a podcasting coach, I would highly recommend Dave Jackson. However, if you would like a pharmacist to help you plan your podcast, I can help you too. I have a self-paced online podcast-planning course for pharmacy professionals under the “store” tab on thepharmacistsvoice.com. If planning a podcast has been on your to-do list, either Dave or I can help you get started.

If you know someone who is interested in starting a podcast, please share this episode with them.

In July, Dr. Helen Sairany will talk about her second book: The We You Don’t See: Understanding the Long Shadows of Trauma. During the interview, Dr. Sairany explains why she wrote the book, her target audience, what she wants her readers to do with the information in the book, and more.

In August, Dr. Janan Sarwar and Dr. Theary Chhim from Publishing in Doses will be on the show to talk about the ebook/audiobook combo they are helping me publish this summer. It’s called Pharmacist Podcaster. Both the ebook and the audiobook are a lead magnet for the podcast planning service I offer through The Pharmacist’s Voice. I’m working on setting up the newsletter and automations that will offer the ebook and audiobook this summer. Want to write a book? Need a publisher? Listen to this episode in August 2024 to learn how Publishing in Doses can help you too.

Steve Leuck, PharmD Bio (June 2024)

After graduating University of the Pacific school of pharmacy in 1987, Steve began his practice in a local community hospital pharmacy where he stayed for the 8 years. For the following 18 months, Steve completed a 28-day drug and alcohol treatment program, worked through licensing stipulations with the board of pharmacy, and attended a yearlong course of study to become a certified addiction counselor.

Steve successfully transitioned back to pharmacy where he worked the next 25 years in a clinic pharmacy for a local community hospital. During this time, Steve developed and implemented a bedside education and meds-to-bed program in order to help educate patients as well as assure they acquired their new medications upon discharge from the hospital.

Throughout this time, Steve founded and developed AudibleRx; an internet-based patient medication education platform designed specifically for those challenged with literacy or visual impairment. In 2023, AudibleRx was donated to a medical information based non-profit organization.

After nearly 33 years of practice with the same institution, Steve retired and took a half-time position for another hospital which allows him time to travel with his wife, ride his bike through the Santa Cruz mountains, and write.

  • This is essentially an, “I’m out-of-the-office” message. I’m in Europe May 1-12, 2024. I refer to this as a “summer trip” during this episode because my younger son is with me, and this is his summer vacation from college.

The remainder of my May 2024 production schedule is as follows:

May 17, 2024: Pronunciation Series Episode 32 May 24, 2024: Spring 2024 Update May 31, 2024: Interview with Matt Grissinger, RPh from ISMP (The Institute for Safe Medication Practices) about their Targeted Medication Safety Best Practices for Community Pharmacy
