Episodes

  • Two music-centric films. Two different generations. Both released in 1994, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction call upon the same period of popular music but in distinctly different ways (with very different budgets). Michael Parker (Pickwick) and I try out a new episode format -- you could say we take it for a spin in a vintage Chevy while enjoying an overpriced milkshake -- where we pit the soundtracks against each other, track by track. We also talk about the films a bit. And we hear some GREAT songs.
Let me know if these are fun!

  • THE GLORIOUS FINAL CHAPTER.
    * Also we talk about YouTube, but this episode is audio-only (and further episodes, most likely!) *
We went for it on this one. 45 bands. 5 parts.
Dashboard Confessional. Saves the Day. Paramore. Further Seems Forever. Anberlin. Brand New. Taking Back Sunday. Cursive. My Chemical Romance... and THIRTY-SIX other bands.
I am joined by returning guest Jeff Martin (This Day & Age) for the most ambitious and thorough tournament yet attempted on Pretty Good Vibrations. But here's the thing -- we keep things fairly breezy throughout and don't linger on any particular band tooooo long... If you lived through this era, then we almost definitely talked about most of your favorite bands.

** There was an issue with Jeff's mic, creating some little pops and audio artifacts throughout the episode. For some it might be too annoying, but I haven't found a way to solve it and I think it'll be livable for most listeners **

** Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lJfetnfLjBE **
Scott Carlton, longtime close friend of mine and alum of Drive Thru and Tooth & Nail Records, finally convinced me to look deep into the darkest corners of human life and art... 80s glam metal, also known as "hair metal." We're talking Twisted Sister, Poison, Bon Jovi, Quiet Riot. We're talking about some of the most embarrassing moments in American pop and rock music. And, sadly, we are talking about the most popular era of heavy metal in global history! But Scott humanizes this genre and time period, and of course, we have a ton of fun with the songs and stories themselves. Throw on your big hair wig, break out your hair spray, grab a red solo cup, and come feel the noise!

On the inaugural "Wish I Wrote That" episode, I sit down with my old friend Ethan Luck (Relient K, Project 86, The O.C. Supertones, The Dingees, Demon Hunter) to talk about SoCal punk band Face to Face. I highlight their 2000 track "You Couldn't Had Everything," why I wished I had written the song back when it came out, and why I still love it today. We also hear Ethan's history and friendship with Trever Keith and the Face to Face crew, and talk about/listen to a few other great songs of theirs.

  • Each year, Dan makes a mix of the songs that spent the most time in his head during the preceding 12 months. Some years, there is both a "rock" mix and an "everything else" mix, and 2023 is such a year. Presented today with a bit of context and explanation are the non-heavy songs; the full mix is also available as both a Spotify and Apple Music playlist for your listening convenience.
Artists include: Bleachers, Prince, Adele, Henry Jamison, Weezer (again), and more.
