Kapiti Coast residents are demanding the council throw out a report on how to protect hundreds of homes from sea level rise. Locals and the Kapiti Coast District Council have been at loggerheads for more than a decade over attempts to map which areas are most at risk over the next century. Led by former Prime Minister Jim Bolger, a panel of experts and locals held more than 20 community sessions around the region to try to settle the issue. But angry protesters turned up yesterday as the report was handed over to the council. Reporter Kate Green was there.

The government has announced an "extensive" review into the management of risk within the country's earthquake-prone building system. Building and Contruction Minister Chris Penk says a steering group with an independent chair will oversee the review, and which reports back in 2025. Any legislation would be introduced later in 2026. Penk spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Northland locals are fed up with the state of the region's infrastructure after dealing with the worst power cut since Cyclone Gabrielle. Nearly 100,000 people were initially cut off when a single pylon north of Auckland toppled. Most properties have now had their power restored, but hot water has been shut off. Student nurses say they are shocked and confused they might not be guaranteed a job when they finish studying. The nurses union says Te Whatu Ora/Health New Zealand has paused the mid-year intake into the new graduate programme, which provides student nurses with roles in the hospital system. But Te Whatu Ora says there's no pause on recruitment for graduate nurses. Earlier a third-year student nurse told Morning Report she's been left in the dark by the conflicting messages. Ember, Maverik and Jayda Phillips were last seen with their father Tom Phillips in the western Waikato community more than two years ago. The United Fire Brigades Association says at a prizegiving in March the mayor claimed volunteer firefighters are second-class citizens and attacked the appearance of the MC. A Federated Farmers representative says the economic downturn is hitting farmers harder than anything he's seen in forty years. The group's meat and Wool industry spokesperson Toby Williams says revenue has fallen by more than 40 percent in the last two years, while costs have gone up by half. It comes as the manufacturing sector is also feeling the strain, with falling demand forcing firms to scale back production. Employers and Manufacturers Association chief executive Brett O'Riley spoke to Corin Dann along with Tony Williams.
