There’s a lot more to a healthy pregnancy and post-pregnancy than just eating the right food and working out, according to Lindsey Mathews, the founder of BIRTHFIT. Ashleigh catches up with Lindsey during a trip to Austin to chat with the founder (also a chiropractor and doula) about the company’s mission to cultivate awareness and enhance education throughout the parenthood transition through in person classes and coaches and workshops as well as online learning resources so moms and moms to be and their families can make informed and intuitive choices about their health and their pregnancy and their birth. They chat birth experiences, good and bad exercises for pregnant women, how to get sleep (and sex) post-partum, and above all how to feel empowered to make intuitive, informed choices during your pregnancy, birth, and life in general.

In this episode, Richard Diaz and I talk about one of the most controversial subjects in Crossfit. How do I increase work capacity while training less?? With so many different ideologies circling the sport under so many different coaches — it’s really hard to land on one solid piece of information. Everyone has theories, however Rich has more data.
We talk a lot about battling fatigue. We talk a lot about what’s truly right by science. And we talk about a new training style that Rich has been working on since he heard about CrossFit. In my honest opinion, his newest theory is the missing piece we’ve all been looking for. Welcome to one of the moments in sport when everything changes. I’m so excited to be part of it and I’m more excited to drop this episode in your eardrums.
God speed.

Brooks Meadows is the host of Barbell Buddha Rediscovered where he shines light on Chris Moore who, before his passing, left a treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom about strength, family, philosophy, science, vice, and how to live an exuberant, self realized existence.
He also owns Recess 901, a gym located in Memphis where they put the fun back in fitness bound by the same tenets that makes a school recess special: Community, Autonomy, and Simplicity.
In this final episode of The Bledsoe Show with Shrugged Collective, Brooks and I talked about his early trials and tribulations when starting out his gym Recess 901, what makes the gym different, and we celebrated Chris' life by taking sharing some memories with him and how Brooks is honoring Chris' legacy through his Barbell Buddha Rediscovered podcast.

There are some “universal truths” about food, health, and the wisdom of our doctors that we all take for granted – but in this episode of Muscle Maven Radio, Ashleigh speaks with practicing physician Dr. Ken Berry bout his book, Lies My Doctor Told me, in an effort to debunk some faulty research and flawed advice as well as empower individuals to do their own research, ask questions, and work with their doctors to achieve optimal health—rather than simply taking every piece of information we see at face value. We discuss the complicated topic of hormone health and hormone replacement therapy, we deep dive into different diet approaches including paleo, keto, and carnivore, and we ask deeply important questions like, are BBQ and coffee bad for you or what?
Dr. Ken Berry is a practicing board certified physician, an Amazon best-selling author, and a passionate advocate of health on his YouTube channel where he has over 600,000 subscribers. Along with his online presence, he is active in his own community of Camden Tennessee where he has been practicing at The Berry Clinic since 2003. Dr. Berry is known for his direct, no nonsense approach to health and wellness. After signing with Victory Belt Publishing House this year, Dr. Berry just released a second edition of his best-selling book Lies My Doctor Told Me. He is also in the process of writing his second book called Common Sense Keto for Type II Diabetes.
Minute Breakdown:
5 – 20 Intro into Dr. Berry and his provocative book, Lies My Doctor Told Me, the problematic culture of symptom-based medicine, and overworked doctors who don’t have time read research or address their patients in a holistic way. How to broach subjects or concerns or ask questions of your doctor without causing problems.
20 - 42 We talk about hormones: why women are more than just estrogen; key points women should be aware regarding hormonal health; issues with synthetic hormone replacements; and ways to improve hormone profiles naturally. Also: are the negative symptoms of menopause avoidable?
42 – 57 A discussion of paleo, keto, and carnivore diets, how they work, and when they can be useful to treat certain health challenges
57 – Debunking some health myths around meat consumption and preparation (is grilling and blackening your meat bad? Are preserved meats always unhealthy? Can I eat a hot dog without feeling guilty?) We also talk about the flaws in some food research including flawed study design and misinterpretation—purposely or otherwise—of data

Travis Kennedy is a 13 year Navy SEAL veteran. After becoming a member of my gym, CHALK, just a few months, I’ve always had so many questions I wanted to ask. I mean, who hasn’t wanted to be a Navy SEAL at one point in their life? And when you meet one, I feel like you just want to ask them everything! So that’s what this show is about.
It’s a little bit of everything from an internally super excited child version of myself, but also with a take away message of how to take that Navy SEAL mindset and incorporate it into your everyday life. If we all had just a little more of that mentality each day, so many people wouldn’t have to be searching Instagram for motivation daily. They would be their own source of motivation. They would be more confident, more assertive, more structured... And the list really goes on and on... But the show doesn’t just stop there, we also hit on some the scariest and some best times of his career as well as what gets him excited in civilian life.
I think everyone is really going to benefit from this one! I’m super excited for everyone to listen to it!

This podcast is all about evolution: how scary, difficult, frustrating, and ultimately freeing empowering it can be to figure out how to let go of things that aren’t serving you anymore and allow yourself to grow, change, and move on. Whether in fitness, business, relationships, or life in general, the key to authenticity and happiness is being able to learn from your experiences, pick and choose what works for you, and sometimes, take a leap into the unknown. Today’s guest, nutritional therapy consultant, podcast host, author, and fitness and nutrition coach Steph Gaudreau talks about her own journey, including her recent significant rebranding and all the fear that comes with rebuilding after the painstaking process of building a brand and a following. Steph talks about shifting priorities, stepping out of a “scarcity mindset,” and how staying true to yourself, even when that truth changes, is the best way to live and build a business.
Steph Gaudreau’s mission is to help women create bigger, bolder, fiercer lives — by building health from the inside out She’s a Nutritional Therapy Consultant, author, blogger, coach, podcaster, and the creator of the former Stupid Easy Paleo. Steph wrote the best-seller The Paleo Athlete: A Beginner’s Guide to Real Food for Performance in 2014, and her award-winning book, The Performance Paleo Cookbook: Recipes for Eating Better, Getting Stronger & Gaining the Competitive Edge. Her upcoming book The Core 4, due out in July 2019, shares her Core 4 pillars of health. Steph hosts her Harder to Kill Radio podcast, where she talks all things fitness, nutrition and mindset about how to build unbreakable humans. She’s also the creator of the Core 4 health program, and the Women’s Strength Summit. Steph’s an accomplished strength coach (USA Weightlifting Level 1) and is the creator of fitness programs like Made Strong, Basic Barbell, and Oly Lifting Basics. She coached Olympic weightlifting at CrossFit Fortius in San Diego for 3.5 years and holds numerous CrossFit certifications.
Minute Breakdown:
0 - 17 Ashleigh starts the podcast by talking about her own health and fitness journey and evolution
17 – 27 Steph talks about what it’s like to have a busy online business, how she structures her day, and tips for how to stay focused and avoid distraction when working from home
27 –43 Ashleigh and Steph talk about stepping out of fitness-related comfort zones, including switching from CrossFit to Brazilian jiu jitsu, and how her background in CrossFit and Olympic lifting helps inform her current movement and exercise
43 – 49 Talking about her rebrand from her popular Stupid Easy Paleo platform to her new eponymous brand, with less of a focus on a specific diet protocol and more on helping women with nutrition, fitness, and mindset: helping women find their voices and feel empowered to take up space in their lives and careers
49 – 1:02 Learning about the pros and cons of labels and categories, whether it’s labeling your brand or your nutrition or your fitness approach; how it can be both helpful and limiting
1:02 – Discussing the evolution of her fitness and business and how she learned to worry less about making everyone happy and more about making herself happy, through supporting other women in their journeys. So often, women are expected to be “palatable” to everyone, says Steph: not too strong, not too outspoken, pleasing and cute and happy to fit in to the mold others set for them. But doing the hard work of staying true to ourselves, even when it’s hard, will reflect positively in our businesses, our relationships, and even our fitness.

John Welbourn is CEO of Power Athlete and Fuse Move. Creator of the online training phenomena called “Johnnie WOD” and a hilarious/informative blog called, “Talk To Me Johnny.” He also just happens to be a 9 year veteran of the NFL and a absolutely behemoth of a human.
Ever since I first met John at a CrossFit football seminar about 10 years ago, he has always been a great source of knowledge for me. He has a no bullshit approach to his speaking and writing style, along with the brains to back up and then some... This guy is amazing to listen to when he’s on a topic he enjoys.
John has worked with CrossFit Games athletes, MLB, NFL, NHL, Olympic athletes and the Military. He currently most of his time traveling the world lecturing on performance and nutrition for Power Athlete. You can catch up with John at @powerathletehq and powerathletehq.com

Today’s episode is a deep dive into the life of Kara Lazauskas, a health and conditioning coach with a unique background rich in both athletics and adversity. Beginning at age three when she had her lung removed, continuing through NCAA level basketball and a number of serious ACL injuries, to a low point where Kara suffered from depression and a severe eating disorder. We talk about the struggle, growth and learning that came from finding health, balance, and purpose after hitting rock bottom, and how she is now able to help others through her coaching and research. We also chat about her time as a competitor on NBC’s Titan Games series, her work at Cal State Fullerton studying muscle fiber typing and protein signaling under Dr. Andy Galpin, her competitive MMA fighting experience, and more.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Kara Kilian Lazauskas grew up in a household where athletics and academics were the top priority. At the age of 3 she had her lung removed due to a tumor covering 75% of the left lung. She contests her love for human anatomy and physiology was born from that moment. With her body’s adaption and continuous push both mentally and physically, she was able to gain a scholarship to play at the NCAA level in basketball. However, 4 ACL reconstructions later in her right knee and no real basketball career left in sight, she was left wondering why me? That's where her purpose began. The search for answers carried her into graduate school under Dr. Andy Galpin and Dr. Irene Tobias studying Muscle Fiber Typing and Protein Signaling at California State University-Fullerton. Now, as a coach, mentor, and masters of muscle physiology her years of criticism and experiences comes to serve her purpose, serving others. Kara was a competitor on NBC’s Titan Games, has competed in MMA, and now dedicates her time to researching and coaching.
Minute Breakdown:
3 - 31 Intro to Kara, including having a lung removed when she was three years old, pursuing sports and fitness at a young age and finding success in weightlifting and basketball. We delve into her knee injuries and the subsequent issues (including severely disordered eating) that resulted from her attempt to cope with losing the ability to play the sport she loved
31 – 36 How the trauma gave her the emotional intelligence to succeed and help others; how hitting rock bottom helped her address the issue rather than ignore it
36 - 45 Advice for how people can address, support, or help someone in their life who is exhibiting symptoms of an eating disorder
45 - 56 A discussion of her mental and physical recovery
56 – 1:13 How Kara got into coaching and her lab work with Dr. Andy Galpin, earning a master’s degree in muscle physiology, studying muscle fiber typing and protein signaling in athletes; why more of this type of research has to include women (turns out there are interesting differences between men and women in areas like nutrient timing windows and performance)
1:13 – 1:15 Kara talks about her remote and online coaching as well as one-on-one training, working with a range of athletes
1:15 – 1:28 I ask Kara how she got into competitive MMA fighting, and what that experience was like; why she continues to put herself in uncomfortable situations in order to learn and grow
1:28 – We talk about Kara’s experience with the NBC reality series The Titan Games

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Mr. Myers has since become the Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Ohio Regional Training Center at Ohio State. Business partner with Cory Gregory (who I had on 2 weeks ago), the two own and operate The Old School Gym in Pataskala, Ohio. Coach Myers is known for working out with his students and incorporating more strength training than traditional wrestling coaches.
In addition to his many achievements as a coach, athlete, and business man — Mr. Myers also happens to be a family man and someone that many of us can relate to. He’s a solid role model for many and his approach to coaching and lifestyle is nothing short of motivating. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Jill Coleman coaches fitness coaches on how to build their business, find their passion, and balance their own health and happiness too. Coming from a background of fitness competitions and modeling, she’s certainly not the first fitness pro who’s struggled with dysfunctional attitudes towards eating and exercise and self-acceptance, but she’s done a fantastic job of doing the hard work that it takes to get unstuck from a cycle of shame, self-blame, and overwork to a place where she can help others as well as take care of herself. In this interview, we deep dive into how we can be a contributing, authentic part of the health and fitness industry without becoming obsessive; her experiences from fitness competitions and yo-yo-dieting to finding her version of moderation; how she grew from a scarcity mindset to one based on balance; knowing the difference between ambition and obsession; and how to snap out of a rut, be it in business, life, or fitness.
Jill Coleman’s journey in health and fitness began when she got her first job at a gym at 15 (for the free membership). Jill earned a B.S. in Exercise Science from Wake Forest University and went on to earn an M.S. in Human Nutrition at the University of Bridgeport. While she learned a lot during her years of exercise science and nutrition education, fitness competitions and modeling, and having her work featured in SELF magazine, SHAPE, Women’s Health magazine, and more, she also found herself struggling with food and exercise obsession. Through a lot of hard work and introspection, Jill was able to work on making balance, moderation, and health a priority over six pack abs, and launched her personal brand at JillFit.com in 2010, which has since evolved from a fitness competition prep service to a range of comprehensive online programs and resources for women who want to break the cycle of shame, unsustainable diet, and punishing exercise to create a life they love encompassing mindset, fitness, and business.
Minute Breakdown:
7 - 23 Introduction to Jill and her work coaching and teaching other fitness coaches; her thoughts on how you can be a leader in the fitness industry without being obsessive
23 – 33 Her experiences with fitness and bodybuilding competitions, both positive and negative
33 – 47 A discussion of a key moment in her life (the discovery of her husband’s affair) and how Jill escaped what she called a “blame culture” and worked on healing through introspection and sharing
47 – 59 A conversation about how to tell your own story: knowing how to market yourself as a coach or trainer by being aware of what you can offer and what people are looking for
59 – 1:07 How she made her way out of a creative rut by writing a full length romance novel – which she doesn’t plan on publishing!
1:07 – 1:19 Finding the balance between ambition, challenging yourself, working hard, and enjoying your life; the importance of goal setting
1:19 – 1:28 Talk about the biggest challenges of fitness coaching (spoiler alert, it’s expectation management) Getting people to just keep showing up to the process. We are in the trust business, which takes time to earn.
1:28 How to be useful, authentic, and interesting on the internet for your business, and why popularity on social media doesn’t necessarily correlate to coaching success; you have to know how to use it effetively. Why your mindset and approach to challenge is more important than the challenge itself
