Black folks often have an intimate yet complicated relationship with our hair.
From sitting through burning relaxers trying to get bone straight hair, to learning to rock a TWA because you just couldn’t wait any longer to go natural, to slathering on castor oil and praying your hair edges come back -- we have endless experiences with our hair.
Some experiences are empowering, others may be painful.
We also understand that society has a lot to say about our hair. Navigating the expectations that workplaces and relationships often place on our hair becomes a regular part of our lives.
But through it all, we find ways to try to love our hair and pass along the hair and life lessons we’ve learned along the way.
Textured Tales is a podcast that shares stories about Black hair and our relationship to it.
Creator and Host: Randi Williams -
On this week’s episode, I talk with Corey from the podcast Brunch with the Bros (@_brunchwiththebros). Corey drops hella gems as he shares about his 7-year on-again-off-again relationship with his ex.
He talks about the unrealistic expectations his ex had of their relationship based on what she saw on social media. Their inability to meet her #relationshipgoals led her to explore options with other men.
In the Do Better Corner, we talk about whether or not ghosting is "petty".

On this week’s episode, I talk with CJ Jackson from the podcast 6IX & Friends (@6ixandfriendspod). CJ and I talk about his experience dating women who have stopped dating him because he’s not Christian. Because CJ primarily dates Black women who are often Christian, he’s had to adapt his mindset and approach to dating.
We switch up the Do Better Corner today and CJ shares a petty story of when his ex-girlfriend tried to claim he was the father of her child. It’s definitely a good one!
Enjoy the episode! -
On this week’s episode, I talk with photographer, visual designer, and brand manager, Stephen Miller (@stephenlamiller). In a world full of ghosting and blocking Stephen shares his perspective on healthier breakups.
Newly single after a 4 year relationship, Stephen shares how he's approaching dating right now and what dating app he's using to get back out there.
Enjoy the episode! -
On this week’s episode, I talk with violinist and music instructor, Kendall Isadore. We chat about Kendall's brief summer situationship during quarantine.
She met a fellow teacher who seemed to have his shit together emotionally, but their budding romance quickly devolved once financial troubles and inattentiveness started to creep in.
Enjoy the episode! -
On this week’s episode, I talk with Baltimore based performance artist, non-profit and small business consultant, organizer and mother of two -- Alanah Nichole (@alanahasenteredthechat).
Alanah and I discuss her experiences with unrequited love, whether or not millennial men and women want the same things in dating, and how she’s navigating being in love with her best friend.
And Alanah doesn’t disappoint in the Do Better Corner ;).
Enjoy the episode!

On this week’s episode, I have something a little different for y’all. It’s a crossover episode with Penda from the Pro Hoe Podcast.
How do you distinguish between an emotional boundary and a resistance to vulnerability? Penda -- the creator of the Pro Hoe Podcast (@improhoe) -- and I discuss this question and many other topics around barriers to vulnerability in modern dating in our crossover episode this week.
It was truly a delight talking with Penda and I can’t wait for you to hear us process some of our own experiences and try to figure out how we gon’ get God to bless us with healthy, compatible partners.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with fan favorite… and my best friend, Alishia. We kept it pretty light. She shares about a recent experience dating someone who was great on paper, chemistry was poppin’, but the attraction just wasn’t there.
We all know that chemistry and attraction aren’t everything, but that shit matters.
Hear about some of the back and forth she went through deciding how to proceed and how things ultimately ended.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Cara — a single 30-year-old woman who told me about her experience in a 10-year off again/on again situationship.
After meeting in college and experiencing a feeling freedom and comfort she had never experienced before, completely untangling her life from a situationship that she knew would never turn into more became difficult.
Over the 10 years, Cara entered several other relationships and even got engaged.
She shares how her experience in the situationship played a role in her ending her engagement.
Cara’s self-awareness and transparency make this a really good episode.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Saneeta — a 34-year-old woman living in New York City who’s taking an indefinite break from dating.
She’s met her fair share of duds and instead of being up front when she’s ready to move on, Saneeta tends to keep her feelings to herself and let things drag on much longer than she’d really like to.
Saneeta shares a story of dating a dude who took advantage of her kindness (and her wallet…) and another story of a guy who got SLOPPY drunk and ruined their date.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Yewande — a 34-year-old who has never had a serious, committed relationship.
For me, her situation was super relatable. She shares her experience navigating a variety of failed situationships and how “going with the flow” has led her to be perpetually single.
We talk about the need for vulnerability, clear expectations, and trusting your gut as you enter and navigate dating.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Ashley — a 33-year-old who shares her experience ending her engagement and relationship 6 months before her wedding. And get this… everything was already paid for. I know… shocking, right?
We talk about what led her to make that decision and how she went about ending their 4-year relationship and engagement some.
We also talk about how she’s tackling her life as a single woman and why she’s team #neversettle.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Rishea — a 31-year-old who shares her experience entering quickly into a relationship with someone who was recently out of a relationship and still teasing his life apart from his ex.
We talk about why being a rebound usually ain’t it and the role of self worth playing in setting and enforcing boundaries in dating.
In the Do Better Corner, Rishea shares an instance where she may or may not have been waiting on the front porch for a nigga to get home.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Ebony — a 32-year-old who shares her experience dating an IBM (ideal black man) in college, only to be left broken-hearted and extremely jaded.
The incident created a dynamic within Ebony of trying to prove herself worthy to potential partners, while keeping enough distance to prevent anyone from hurting her again. It’s a wall Ebony is still working on tearing down as she navigates vulnerability in her current relationship.
Ebony shares honestly about the joys and challenges of her relationship as well as sharing about an embarrassing moment from her dating past -- spoiler alert: it had something to do with that IBM she dated.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with DeJa — a 35-year-old who talks about practicing radical honesty in her year and a half long relationship. DeJa learned from failed relationships the importance of communication and despite their practice of radical honesty in her current relationship, she’s not sure it's for everyone.
You’ll get to hear what radical honesty looks like in her relationship and why it might not be for you and your boo.
And as a self-proclaimed “petty person”, you’ll hear how DeJa can get a little petty with her partner in the Do Better Corner.
Enjoy! -
On this week’s episode, I talk with Keyana — a 32-year-old who shares about her experience learning just how important it is to set boundaries and expectations early on in dating.
We talk about how self-worth plays an integral role in asking for what you want in dating and what it feels like to have your needs go unmet in dating.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Sheun — a 32-year-old who spent a good chunk of his 20’s in undefined and complicated situationship. You’ll hear how things started off slow, built up, and then devolved into a confusing situation that left Sheun in an unhealthy place improperly viewing himself and the situation.
We also get into our current definitions of love and how he’s using his definition of love to build a life with his fiance.
Enjoy!

On this week’s episode, I talk with Hawi — a 26-year-old who grew up as the baby of her family who got any and everything she wanted. As a result, when Hawi started dating, she hadn’t yet learned how to effectively communicate her wants and needs. She developed a bad habit of threatening to or actually breaking up with men she was dating whenever she didn’t get her way.
One specific incident with her now ex taught her that not everyone gives and receives information in the same way as she did and that she needed to adjust if she wanted to effectively get a message across.
We also get into our experiences using dating apps and some of our dating app pet peeves.
Enjoy!
