One day, as I went deeper into the TikTok rabbit hole, I came across a video where a woman discussed conversational boundaries. My first thought was ‘What the heck is a conversational boundary?’ Nevertheless, after listening to the video I learned that setting conversational boundaries not only ensures I express what topics I'm not comfortable discussing, but also helps create a space of vulnerability and intentional listening that can benefit my friendships, family life, and dating life—and it’s an act of self-love you can practice daily! Here are five relationship boundaries you can implement to foster healthy relationships:
The Five Relationship Boundaries:
1. Physical Boundaries: Refers to your body, privacy, and personal space and entails setting limits that ensure your physical safety—including boundaries surrounding sexuality, where and when someone goes places, and what a person is comfortable with physically from others.
2. Time Boundaries: Limits set to create a healthy mindset and schedule for yourself. This can include setting limits on how much time you spend with someone or doing a certain activity and setting time boundaries for work, school, and home life balance.
3. Conversational Boundaries: Setting limits about what topics you’re open to and not open to discussing. This can include many different topics, such as politics, religion, sexual content, and many more.
4. Relationship Boundaries: Limits discussed and agreed upon with your partner, family, coworkers, and close friends.
5. Personal Boundaries: The guidelines and rules you set for yourself to ensure you’re being aware of your needs and that you respect and meet those needs in a healthy way.
