Episodes

  •  In this episode, we’re diving into a part of the body we often take for granted—our feet!

As we age, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, foot issues like stiff joints, bunions, and plantar fasciitis often become more common. But what if we told you there’s a way to give your feet the care they deserve?

We’re joined by James Dooner, a physiotherapist and founder of The Foot Collective, to talk about why foot health is so important and how we can strengthen and rebuild our feet with simple, effective practices. From going barefoot to using products like toe spacers, cork balls, and hacky sacks, James shares how these tools can help you restore natural foot function and mobility.

Throughout the episode, we’ll challenge modern shoe culture and explore why many of our footwear choices—despite being "good"—might actually be doing more harm than good. James advocates for minimalist, functional shoes that allow our feet to move naturally, and he explains how barefoot movement can unlock better foot health.

If you’ve ever wondered how to treat your feet better, this is the episode for you! After listening, you’ll never look at your feet—or your shoes—the same way again.

All the foot care products James mentions are available at You Must Try It, and you can find links to everything discussed in the show.

    Key Takeaways:

Feet are the foundation for movement but are often neglected. Many modern shoes, even supportive ones, restrict natural foot movement.Barefoot movement and minimalist shoes can help restore foot health.Foot health improves through simple practices like using toe spacers and introducing more texture to our daily lives.

  • In this eye-opening episode, you'll be the amazing Dr. Christine Houghton, a renowned expert in Nutritional Biochemistry and Nutrigenomics, to discuss how our diets are failing us—despite living in a country like Australia where fresh food and nutrition are abundant. Shockingly, diet is the 3rd leading preventable cause of ill health and premature death among women. Chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, bowel cancer, and stroke are deeply connected to what we eat.

Dr. Houghton shares why it’s time to rethink our relationship with food and how we can make meaningful changes by understanding our genetics and biochemistry. We discuss the revolutionary fields of Nutrigenomics and Epigenetics, which highlight how each meal we consume can influence gene pathways—either promoting health or contributing to disease. Dr. Houghton also sheds light on common dietary misconceptions, critiques of modern food products, and why “food is medicine” is more than just a saying.

We explore practical steps to take control of your health through smarter food choices, and Dr. Houghton introduces us to Cell Logic’s nutrigenomically active products, like DefenCELL¼ and EnduraCell¼, designed to support cellular health and disease prevention.

  • In this episode, we chat with Dr. Pouria Moradi, a renowned plastic surgeon and author of NORMAL: A Plastic Surgeon’s Letter to His Daughters About Body Image. The conversation delves into the complex world of plastic surgery, challenging the typical associations with procedures like breast augmentations and facelifts. Instead, Dr. Moradi emphasises how plastic surgery can help women of all ages feel "normal," making it a significant part of some women's aging well journey. The discussion touches on the meaning of "normal" from a plastic surgeon's perspective, exploring why Dr. Moradi chose this term for his book title. He shares insights into life as a plastic surgeon, the reactions he receives when he discusses his profession, and the most common cosmetic procedures that women seek, highlighting how these trends have evolved over time. For women considering a facelift, Dr. Moradi breaks down the process, including what to expect, the costs, downtime, risks, and who the ideal candidates are. He also shares stories of women who have undergone surgery and discusses the future of plastic surgery, including exciting new advancements in the field. The discussion is dedicated to women who choose plastic surgery, emphasising that it’s not always about "looking better" but about feeling normal and empowered. At The Aging Project, the message is clear: women should feel no guilt or shame in making choices that are right for them, whether that includes plastic surgery or not. The episode concludes with a reminder to age with kindness—towards ourselves and others.

Alexa shares her incredible life journey of resilience and self-discovery, offering valuable insights on building strength of body and mind, self-care, and living life to the fullest.

    Discussion Topics

Alexa's Story Hip Replacement and Near Death Experience:

On August 12, 2017, Alexa was admitted to the hospital for a routine hip replacement. She experienced a rare 1 in 10,000 anaphylactic reaction to antibiotics, flatlined, and was resuscitated four times. This near-death experience taught her the value of appreciating every day.

    Early Adversity:

At 15, Alexa's mother was diagnosed with manic depression, making home life unsafe. She was bullied at school for being too skinny, leading her to the gym for connection and empowerment.

     Sobriety Journey:

Alexa struggled with binge drinking from ages 15 to 19, influenced by her father’s alcoholism. Her journey to sobriety was difficult, but she overcame it, learning the importance of asking for help and reassessing her training and lifestyle.

    Self-Care through Joyful Activities:

Create a list of activities you love and commit to doing at least one of them each day. This simple practice can significantly enhance your contentment and happiness.

    Strength Matters as We Age:

Maintaining strength is crucial for functional independence. Alexa encourages everyone to find ways to feel stronger, whether it’s starting with a few push-ups on an incline or incorporating other simple strength-building exercises into your routine.

    Functional Independence:

Alexa’s goal is to remain functionally independent and continue doing the things she loves with the people she loves every day. She inspires listeners to adopt this mindset and find their path to getting stronger.

    Mindset and Resilience:

Alexa’s story is a testament to the power of mindset. She emphasises that everyone faces adversity, but it’s our choice to overcome it. Strength training provides an opportunity to seek challenges and build resilience.

    Addiction:

Alexa’s struggle with alcohol taught her that addiction is not romantic and overcoming it requires a strong support system and self-awareness. She highlights the importance of kindness and understanding towards oneself during this journey.

Life of Adventure and Taking Chances From participating in the reality show "Naked and Afraid" to constantly pushing her limits, Alexa believes in taking chances and stepping out of her comfort zone. She emphasises that choice, not change, drives growth and transformation.

Strength Exercises: Start small with exercises like incline push-ups in the kitchen or the shower. Consistency is key.

Mindset Shift: Focus on functional independence and the joy of being able to engage in activities with loved ones.

Self-Care Routine: Find a morning routine that works for you and integrate activities that make you feel good.

Purposeful Living: Know your “why” for making changes or building strength. Whether it’s running around with your grandkids or enjoying time with loved ones, having a clear purpose is motivating.

  • During perimenopause and menopause, we face an urgent epidemic that's been normalised - even trivialised. Tune into the podcast to hear a very candid conversation with our resident Clinical Nutritionist, Lynsey Koch, to help you understand the health risks of visceral fat during perimenopause and menopause—risks that affect even 'skinny' women.

Lynsey is here to capture your attention and encourage you to view weight through the lens of health. Is it time to reframe weight as a medical issue rather than a trivial, superficial concern? Here’s some key points discussed:

Visceral vs. Subcutaneous Fat: Visceral fat surrounds internal organs and poses greater health risks than subcutaneous fat, which lies under the skin.

Glucose and Insulin: Imbalances in glucose and insulin levels are key factors in weight gain and overall metabolic health.

Impact of Menopause: Hormonal changes during menopause increase visceral fat, complicating weight management for women.

Health Risks of Visceral Fat: Excess visceral fat is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Food Industry and Bliss Point Foods: The food industry designs "bliss point" foods to be highly palatable and addictive, contributing to overeating and obesity.

Impact of Cortisol: Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, promoting fat storage, particularly visceral fat, and hindering weight loss.

Need to Test Fasting Insulin Levels: Monitoring fasting insulin levels can indicate insulin resistance early and help tailor effective weight loss strategies.

Weight and Longevity Link: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for longevity, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and enhancing quality of life.

Worrying Weight and Obesity Epidemic: Rising rates of overweight and obesity are leading to widespread health issues and increased healthcare costs.

Bye Bye Belly Fat 14-Day Reset: This program, designed for peri and menopausal women, offers anti-inflammatory nutrition, targeted training, and expert coaching to reduce visceral fat and improve metabolic health.
