  • How has the role of the showrunner evolved throughout our current golden age of scripted television? And is it still the most demanding job in showbiz? On any given day, a showrunner will be answering questions (and/or putting out fires) from her writers, director, cast, network, post-production team, UPM… and probably writers, again. In this extraordinary session, a group of television’s top showrunners discuss the finer (and not so fine) points of making scripted television happen. • By its very nature, reality television is a producer’s medium. And no producer in the history of reality TV has defined the format more than Mark Burnett. From his long running franchises Survivor, The Apprentice, Are you Smarter Than a 5th grader?, and Shark Tank to his recent juggernaut The Voice, Burnett consistently has set the terms of the reality TV discussion. This Conversation will turn an eye towards the future of the format, while also discussing the essential elements of reality television success-- from concept development, to casting, to the challenges of structuring story arcs both within and across episodes. How does a producer shape an unfolding story from the sidelines? What are the considerations when making alterations from season to season? And given the 100 million viewers and record DVD sales of Burnett’s hit, The Bible, what lessons of reality production did he apply to his first scripted series?
