    This week, Fiona is back in the solo adventurer's seat as she continues her playthrough of Faerie Mound of Dragonkind, a solo quest adventure book set in Dragonlance!

    Written by Jean F. Blashfield and James M. Ward and published by TSR in 1987, Faerie Mound of Dragonkind is part of the CATACOMBS gamebook series which, according to the blurb, represents the ultimate challenge in role-playing adventure. Analytical powers would be tested to the utmost as readers must decide how to deal with the weird and wondrous creatures and artefacts they encounter, using a simplified d12 rule system.

    'Out of the mists of time, protected by the enchantments of the ancient gods, rises the Faerie Mound of Dragonkind. At the dawn of mankind, faeries could be found everywhere, but with the introduction of cold iron, these enchanted creatures were forced to gather their magical essences in ancient places of power, wrapped in magical illusions. Once every thousand years, the Mound is revealed in all its splendor. It is at these times only that mortals can cross over into the dangerous world of ancient magic and power that is the last stronghold of the enchanted realm.

    In FAERIE MOUND OF DRAGONKIND, you enter the world of a visual maze, full of surprises both delightful and deadly! You come on a quest, as a fighter or a bard.     This week, Fiona is joined by guest cohost Ty from Side Character Quest once again to discuss two different RPG tools/games to help supplement worldbuilding when running campaigns: Timeskip and Artefact.

    Timeskip by A.A. Voigt is a collaborative worldbuilding tool for jumping characters from a previously-established tabletop campaign into the future. Together with your table, imagine new outfits, new jobs, and even new family members that arrive in your characters' lives as time continues to pass. Furthermore, Timeskip allows each player to make choices about significant factions or NPCs in your campaign, altering them as well as their characters.Artefact by Jack Harrison/Mousehole Press is a solo TTRPG game of legendary items and transient heroes. In the classic dungeon crawl, you follow the lives of adventurers as they overcome challenges to gain prestige and, most importantly, magical treasures. But what were those treasures doing before the adventurers came along? How many aeons have passed, in silent darkness, since they were last used?

    Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game.

    Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic.

    This week Fiona and guest cohost Naomi sit down to chat about Clerics - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Both capable in combat and skilled in the use of divine magic, Clerics are often seen powerful healers whose divinely-granted abilities over life or death, give them to powers to repel or control undead creatures.

    According to the Player's Handbook (2014):

    'Clerics are intermediaries between the mortal world and the distant planes of the gods. As varied as the gods they serve, clerics strive to embody the handiwork of their deities. No ordinary priest, a cleric is imbued with divine magic.

    'Clerics combine the helpful magic of healing and inspiring their allies with spells that harm and hinder foes.     This week, Fiona and guest co-host Liz sit down and chat about 'The Game Master’s Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying: Guidelines and strategies for running PC-driven narratives in 5E adventures' by Jonah and Tristan Fishel, writers and longtime RPG players. As part of the 'Game Master's Books' series published by Media Lab Books, this book suggests that by putting the players and their characters in the driver’s seat, every battle has tension, every faction has a function and every session is high-stakes (and an absolute blast), so GMs can sit back and simply put giant goal- (and soul-) crushing roadblocks in their way.

    The Game Master's Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying bio:

    'Is your roleplaying in a rut? Flip the table and try something new! Proactive roleplaying will re-energize your players – and your game.'

    'This unique new RPG guidebook is designed to transform gameplay in ways that empower players to create their own motivations and goals, then proactively pursue them – in effect, guiding the narrative of their characters, rather than having the Game Master do it.'

    'Traditional TTRPGs have for decades relied on reactive player responses in order to function. In other words, there is an evil wizard out to take over the world. The player characters are good, therefore it’s their duty to go stop the wizard.'

    'Game play then follows a traditional storytelling narrative of protagonists working to return their world back to the status quo, or an improved position. Bad guy makes a move, good guys move to stop him. The problem with this style of gameplay is that players are always reacting to what’s put in front of them.'

  • The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes!

    In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons.

    Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, finish their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Salt & Vacuum.

    Markedly different than their positive counterparts, these four negative Quasielemental planes are generally grim places that break down matter. Undead are common in these Quasiplanes, tortured spirits invigorated by the negative energy that infuses everything.

    The Quasiplane of Salt is an endless world of crystalline structures. At the border of Water and Negative Energy, visitors can expect to have the moisture drained right out of his body.

    The Quasiplane of Vacuum is a region of utter nothingness. Formed at the junction of Air and Negative Energy, it has no light and very little matter. Few creatures can endure such surroundings.
