  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah

Kimi visited four major cities on his trip back to Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto. He visited three shrines, attended the Music Awards Japan 2025, bought new fashion from his friend, attended three concerts, and also visited his parents in Nagano.

    How's that for a two-week trip?

Kimi's primary reason for traveling to Japan was to attend Music Awards Japan 2025. Think of it as Japan's answer to the Grammys—a brand-new international music award designed to celebrate and elevate Japanese and Asian music on the global stage. Organized by the Japan Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association (CEIPA), a coalition of five major Japanese music organizations, this new award show aims to:

Promote Japanese and Asian music worldwide

Foster a globally recognized music culture from Japan

Encourage international artists to engage with the Japanese market

The key awards of the night were:

    - Best Song Asia: aespa – Supernova

    - Top Global Hit from Japan: YOASOBI – Idol

    - New Artist of the Year: tuki. – Bansanka

    - Best Singer-Songwriter Song: Vaundy – Kaiju no Hanauta

    - Artist of the Year: Mrs. GREEN APPLE – Kusushiki

    - Album of the Year: Fujii Kaze – Kirari (from LOVE ALL SERVE ALL)

    - Song of the Year: Creepy Nuts – “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born”

Kimi also visited these three shrines:

    - Tenkawa shrine [天河神社] in Nara

    - Kashihara Jingu [橿原神宮] also in Nara

    - Yasui Konpiragu [安井金比羅宮] in Kyoto

    Kimi saw these three concerts:

     - Official Hige Dandism’s first stadium show in Osaka

    - The ALFEE’s show at the NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo

    - MACO’s show in Nagoya

  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring Golden Week - Japan's Springtime Spectacle

Golden Week, or "Gōruden Wīku" (ゴールデンウィーク) in Japanese, is a collection of four national holidays, that occur within seven days, typically from April 29th to May 5th.

It's one of Japan's busiest holiday seasons, alongside New Year and Obon. During this time, many Japanese people look forward to this week, plan vacations, travel domestically or internationally, and enjoy leisure activities.

    The Holidays Within Golden Week

The national holidays making up the Golden Week are:

April 29Showa Day (Showa no hi):April 29 is the birthday of former Emperor Showa, who died in the year 1989. Until 2006, Greenery Day (see May 4) used to be celebrated on this day.

May 3Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi):On this day in 1947, the new postwar constitution was put into effect.

May 4Greenery Day (Midori no hi):Until 2006, Greenery Day used to be celebrated on April 29, the birthday of former Emperor Showa. The day is dedicated to the environment, because the emperor loved plants and nature. Before being declared Greenery Day, May 4 used to be a national holiday due to a law, which declares a day, that falls between two national holidays, a national holiday.

May 5Children's Day (Kodomo no hi):The Boy's Festival (Tango no Sekku) is celebrated on this day. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, symbolizing strength, power and success in life. The Girl's Festival is celebrated on March 3.

Join us for an exploration of Springtime in Japan and Golden Week!

  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring Matsuri '25

The 2025 MLB season is officially underway, and what better way to kick things off than in Tokyo? In front of a packed Tokyo Dome, the Dodgers took down the Cubs 4-1 in Game 1 of the Tokyo Series— Seiya Suzuki from the Cubs and Shohei Ohtani played, and yep, Shohei Ohtani was at the center of the action (because of course he was). Kimi recaps the historic game.

J-pop fans in Los Angeles just witnessed history in the making—matsuri’25 lit up the Peacock Theater with a sold-out show featuring YOASOBI, ATARASHII GAKKO!, and Ado! Hosted by Japan’s CEIPA organization and the Toyota Group, this wasn’t just a concert—it was a full-fledged cultural event, blending music, industry networking, and global collaboration.

  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW With Jeremiah - Featuring Graduation in Japan

In this episode we’re diving into a big part of Japanese culture that’s coming up soon—graduation!
Graduation in Japan is a pretty major event, and it’s so different from what we might be used to in the U.S. Today.

We’re going to explore all the details—how it’s celebrated, why it’s so special, and even why graduation happens in March instead of June! Japan has some unique traditions for graduation.
In Japan, the school year ends in March, and that’s when graduation ceremonies are held. It’s not just about weather, though that’s definitely a bonus with the cherry blossoms!
Since the school year starts in April, graduation takes place at the end of the school year in March.
And another reason it happens in March is that it’s more aligned with the financial year in Japan, which also starts in April. So, it’s sort of a “new beginning” all around. The end of school and the start of the fiscal year are linked, and for many, graduation signifies a time of transition to adulthood, to the workforce, or to higher education.

  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring Valentine's Day In Japan

Today, we’re talking about something sweet, romantic, and uniquely Japanese – Valentine’s Day!
We are exploring the rich Valentine's Japanese traditions.
Valentine's Day is rooted in ancient Rome and involves a mix of love, rebellion, and a bit of mystery! The day is named after Saint Valentine, but here’s the twist—there were several Saint Valentines.
The most famous story revolves around a priest named Valentine who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Claudius believed that single men were better soldiers than married ones, so he outlawed marriage so young men could focus on building his army.
And what happened was that Valentine rebelled! He secretly performed weddings for young couples in love. When the emperor found out, Valentine was arrested and eventually executed on February 14th—hence the date.
However, there’s another layer to this story. While Valentine was in prison, he’s said to have healed the jailer’s blind daughter and, before his execution, wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine.” That phrase stuck and became a symbol of affection.

  • THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring New Year's Eve in Japan

The New Year is widely viewed as a time to start over — a clean slate. It’s an opportunity to leave behind past mistakes, challenges, or regrets and embrace new beginnings with optimism.
This "reset" aligns with our natural inclination to mark time and milestones as moments for reflection and renewal.
Many cultures have rituals or practices associated with the New Year that emphasize renewal, gratitude, and hope for the future.

In Japan, for example, hatsumōde at shrines symbolize a spiritual reset.
In the West, traditions like making resolutions are rooted in self-improvement and goal-setting.
We are naturally drawn to rhythms and cycles, such as the passage of days, months, and years. The New Year provides a mental checkpoint for evaluating personal growth and planning for the future.
Setting resolutions or intentions motivates because it offers a structured framework for achieving aspirations.
Japan says goodbye to the old year on New Year’s Eve, called Ōmisoka.
Ōmisoka is all about reflection and preparation—emphasizing cleansing and renewal. The New Year’s Eve starts with Ōsōji, the deep cleaning of homes before the New Year. It’s a physical and spiritual reset. Preparing your space by removing the old makes room for good fortune in the year ahead. Families take this tradition seriously, often involving every member of the household.
After that, Families gather to enjoy toshikoshi soba, or “year-crossing noodles.” The noodles symbolize a wish for a long, humble, healthy life. Eating them is a way to let go of the past year's hardships and start fresh. Eating Soba noodles on New Year’s Eve. Usually, after dinner at the turn of the year.
Another major part of Ōmisoka focuses on family activities like watching TV. One of the most popular programs is Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a music competition featuring Japan’s top artists of that year. It’s not just entertainment but also a way to reflect on the year through music and culture.
Let's delve deeper into Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a cornerstone of Japan's New Year's Eve celebrations. This annual music program, produced by NHK, translates to "Red and White Song Battle," symbolizing the competition between the Red Team (female artists) and the White Team (male artists).
