21:46 – What can you do to improve regularity?

44:40 – CK Procedure for Reshaping Cornea

Tweetable Quotes"Keratoconus is like a weakening in the cornea, specifically the collagen fibers. I describe it as a hernia on the eye because it bulges out, causing distortions like double vision, glare, and halos. This can severely impact daily activities like driving at night." (04:23) (Dr.Brian)

"For parents with keratoconus, it's crucial to have your children checked starting around age nine. There's a 15% chance they could develop the condition, and early detection with corneal topography can prevent significant vision loss." (12:00) (Dr.Brian)

"For more advanced keratoconus cases, we use what I call biologic Intacs, or KeraRing segments. These are made of corneal collagen and can be much thicker than traditional Intacs, providing more flattening and better vision improvement." (34:12) (Dr.Brian)

“The Visian ICL is a life-changing procedure for treating high levels of nearsightedness. It involves placing an insertable lens behind the iris and in front of the natural lens, significantly improving vision and often eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses." (41:07) (Dr.Brian)

Tweetable Quotes“The theory is that the structure and function are interrelated. And when one is off, the other is gonna be off. For example, if you have muscle pain, let’s say your spine is not in the right position, it’s gonna strain the surrounding muscle and tissue. So, if you’re able to adjust and correct the problem, you’re gonna fix the surrounding area and reduce the inflammation.” (08:39) (Dr. Sasha Haddad)

“In life, is anything possible? By nature, very rarely, potentially, maybe. But, medically speaking, by the time you hit puberty - in terms of bone width and height growing taller - I highly disagree, unless something pathologically happened differently.” (13:50) (Dr. Sasha Haddad)

“For the most part when you eat raw meat, the nutrients are present. And, of course, building blocks and protein can help.” (17:21) (Dr. Sasha Haddad)

“I agree, don’t spend your money on something that you don’t necessarily need. What’s better is down time.Try to limit yourself from being on your phone or on your computer a few hours prior to going to sleep. I think that’s way better than all of this.” (19:41) (Dr. Sasha Haddad)

“I think people can take fiber, but it doesn’t help if you’re not hydrating well. So, the key element here is you have to be able to hydrate. You have to have enough fluids in you to have things go through.” (24:59) (Dr. Sasha Haddad)

“There’s a vast array of chemicals in a vape and what goes into the lung. But even more than that, it’s thermal energy. So, in other words, it produces very high heat in the lung, and the lung is quite sensitive to very high temperatures. The damage can not only come from the chemicals that are contained in the vape oil, but also from the heat that’s generated. It’s much hotter than cigarette smoke.” (10:52) (Dr. David)

If you’re lucky enough to have success on YouTube, it’s because you found a lane. But if you stay in the lane too long, people are gonna get bored and leave. But if you get out of your lane, they’re not gonna like it and they’re gonna leave. So, you have to find a way to expand your lane while staying in your lane.’ I had no idea what that meant, but that’s the path I’ve always followed on YouTube.” (09:45) (Jordan)“I think a lot of times what happens with people is they have a dream and they have a job. And those two things are not connected. So, they do their job because they need to do their job, but the dream gets put on hold.” (16:31) (Jordan)“I think there’s a certain amount of regret I’ve always been afraid of living with. And the regret comes from not having done everything I could to fulfill my dreams.” (18:38) (Jordan)“YouTube has seen a significant percentage of their viewers go to TikTok. So, they’re trying to get them back with shortness. But the real money they make is on long-form content. What they’re hoping is that they get them away from TikTok by incentivizing creators to make more content on YouTube, and then once the viewers are on YouTube, they’ll watch the long-form and see the ads.” (27:22) (Jordan)“Not everybody is meant to be on camera. Not everyone is meant to have a platform. You need to have something to say to have a platform. So, first, what is it that you have to say? And, when I say, ‘not everyone is meant to have a platform,’ what I mean is not everybody is offering the audience something that is of value. So then why am I watching? Everybody could though. We all have that value, but if you’re just trying to be somebody else, you’re not gonna offer that value.” (32:07) (Jordan)Resources Mentionedï»żNCHS Links Mentionedï»ż Jordan’s WebsiteJordan’s InstagramJordan’s TikTokJordan’s VimeoJordan’s TwitterJordan’s BlogJordan’s TumblrJordan’s YouTubeJordan’s Books:Born To DanceDancers Among Usï»żNCHS Footerï»ż ï»żPowered by FullCast

“We definitely have lots and lots of research and data that is very conclusive that the bacteria in our intestines and our gut is really important for our health in so many different ways.” (02:46) (Dr. Brian)

“What we find is that, on the flip side, if somebody has really bad oral hygiene - they don’t go to the dentist regularly, they don’t brush or floss regularly - that the bad bacteria really start overtaking the good bacteria in the mouth. Studies have shown that people in that scenario with a lot of plaque on their teeth have increased risk of heart attack.” (04:01) (Dr. Brian)

“Like you said, it’s an exciting time to have acne, which sounds a little paradoxical, but it’s really true. It’s not like the Clearasil days. It’s proactive. We can do more now.” (07:57) (Dr. Brian)

09:01 – Dr. Brian teases Acne & Skincare Remedies, Part 3

    Tweetable Quotes
“You know, she makes a good point. It’s not always diet related if you have acne. So, as long as you eat a well-rounded, healthy diet, you don’t necessarily have to eliminate certain foods, unless you know that, for whatever reason, you’re on some extreme all cow’s milk diet or something like that.” (03:30) (Dr. Azi)

“I always tell people your skin barrier is the key to healthy skin. It keeps the bad stuff out and the good stuff in. And so when it’s disrupted, acne gets worse.” (04:08) (Dr. Azi)

“A lot of times, when acne goes away, it leaves behind a stain - a red stain or a brown stain. If you don’t protect your skin from the sun, that stain can last for months. If you’re breaking out, wear sun protection because the sun definitely delays the healing of the skin and can cause staining from acne to last much longer.” (06:40) (Dr. Azi)

17:52 – The relationship between the gut microbiome and acne and other skin conditions

    Tweetable Quotes
“I usually recommend you start with just one active for your acne, and that could be in a cleanser, it could be in a toner, it could be in a gel. But don’t overdo it.” (09:26) (Dr. Azi)

“Fungal acne is actually a natural yeast that lives on the skin. And, in certain conditions and with certain hormonal imbalances or microbiomes, that fungus can overgrow and get inside the pores.” (12:02) (Dr. Azi)

“And then other triggers would be stress and not sleeping, which certainly play a role. There’s a new variant of acne that is directly linked to stress and not sleeping, because that causes your cortisol hormone levels to go up. Cortisone is a big player for causing acne.” (15:39) (Dr. Brian)

“Sometimes it’s habits like that. If you’re trying all these things but you’re forgetting about basic hygiene, whether you talk on the phone, put the phone to your cheek, or text all the time and you wipe your face, those are all big factors.” (17:18) (Dr. Azi)

I was easily addicted to social media, and I mean it in the true sense of addiction where it was really interfering with my relationships with my family.” (01:56) (Dr. Brian)“Just like that, you can give somebody anything - anything at all - that’s basically distracting them from what they’re experiencing, and that has been shown to be very effective at reducing anxiety and panic attacks.” (05:02) (Dr. Brian)“A lot of times when people are anxious about a situation, if you think about it, it’s just in somebody’s head. It’s how they are perceiving, or reacting to, a situation.” (06:37) (Dr. Brian)“Acupressure, they concluded, was more effective for patients that are in the hospital - inpatients - or people getting ready for surgery compared to just finger massage.” (10:09) (Dr. Brian)“The second thing is just having insight to recognize that you are potentially having a panic attack. Then you can use some of these things we’re talking about. And I don’t think it’s even beyond trying to distract yourself about something, because we know distraction is really effective. So, if you can focus on something else that you have to deal with, that can be a form of self-distraction. “I think the message here is that you have to also really reconsider if it’s worth saving a few dollars or a few thousands dollars, which is nothing to sneeze at. But, when you’re talking about an invasive surgery and your health, you really don’t want to compromise. And, I’ll advise patients that it’s ok to save up for whatever you need to have done and come back when you’re ready. And I think that’s prudent advice.” (08:16) (Dr. Brian)

“To drive home the point - to be repetitive on purpose - even if someone says, ‘Oh, this is my prescription pill that my so - and - so has,’ and it’s really for them, if it’s not your own prescription, please do not take it.” (16:09) (Dr. Brian)

16:03 – Dr. Brian provides a quick recap of today’s episode and provides sage advice on social media and the impact it can have on all of our lives

    Tweetable Quotes
“I came up with three reasons for testing my chops on TikTok. It might be a good way to dispel misinformation being spread. I could gain a more comprehensive perspective as part of my research for the book. And, as I will explain in full subsequent chapters, I thought it showed some promise of providing me with fun and a pleasurable dopamine rush.” (05:40) (Dr. Brian)

“There were also occasions when I misstepped and accidentally violated the TikTok community guidelines. Here’s an invaluable hint for every TikTok influencer wannabe. Never post a video of eye surgery on TikTok Live. If you do not heed my advice, welcome to TikTok purgatory.” (08:53) (Dr. Brian)

“I cannot do justice to describing the elated feeling that enveloped me on my drive home. I had earned my share of accomplishments throughout my career as a medical professional and surgeon, but had never felt anything like this before. The dopamine swarming in my brain made me feel higher than a coffee addict breaking into a Starbucks coffee shop in the envelope of darkness to swipe all the espresso beans and manically knock back one shot after the other.” (10:52) (Dr. Brian)

“Once the viral videos resumed, I approached being an Influencer from an entirely different perspective, one that was grounded and healthy. I had to control my dopamine balance and always put my family first. They are far more important to me than my millions of followers.” (15:42) (Dr. Brian)

“So there you have it. My confession. I am a recovered TikTok-aholic. Being an influencer has the potential to be addictive and destructive. Mine is a cautionary tale. But at least I can say I safely made it to the other side with my sanity and family intact.” (16:03) (Dr. Brian)

    Tweetable Quotes
“I’m off to the side and I take the blade and I make the skin incision. And I go a little deeper and deeper and then suddenly it’s like a volcano erupting of puss. It literally shoots across the room and hits the door with such fierce intensity because that abscess was under so much pressure that when it was relieved it was like being in Yellowstone Park.”(04:03) (Dr. Brian)

“Our generation, after the whole Tide pods thing happened, I feel like we do have to label everything. But, you know, I never saw any Tide pod challenge victims come to the ER. So I guess maybe it wasn’t that popular, which is a good thing.”(08:09) (Dr. Fayez)

“For those listening, if you have any stomach surgeries, it causes adhesions which increases your suspicion for a small bowel obstruction where constipation, vomiting, abdominal pain, as Brian said, typically would be the presenting symptoms.”(10:05) (Dr. Fayez)

“So we get the CAT Scan, and we see this large circular object literally sitting at the rectum. So, my attending comes in and before we go into the room he’s giving me a prep. He says, ‘Let me ask all the questions.’ So, he walks in and he’s asking the patient questions and it finally comes out that he put an apple up his butt. So, my attending looks at me and gives me this smirk and he turns back to the patient and asks, ‘Was it a green apple or a red apple?’”(10:32) (Dr.Fayez)

“Because it was so large, we decided we’re not even gonna mess with it. There are ways that you could actually remove foreign objects. But the issue with removing these foreign objects is you don’t want to perforate anything because then it becomes a big issue.”(13:11) (Dr. Fayez)

When you get stabbed multiple times, you can actually develop a pneumothorax, which essentially is a collapsed lung.” (08:44) (Dr. Fayez)“There’s so many times in the ER where accidental injuries - and even GSWs (gunshot wounds) - where the bullet literally just barely misses the aorta and lands in the spine but in a way that doesn’t cause any injury to actual the spine itself and these patients escape so luckily.” (15:14) (Dr. Fayez)“I had no idea what was going on. Tweetable Quotes
“For thirteen cents you can get a natural (legal) performance enhancing stimulant. So, now I guess you’re wondering, ‘How is that even possible?’ Well, let’s just break it down.” (04:05) (Dr. Brian)

“Most of the studies used 12 mg [of capsaicin] and they were given about forty-five minutes before the exercise so it gives the body time to absorb it and get it into the system. And, there was one study that used a pretty low dose of just 1.2 mg. So, what were the results? In this one study where they ran 1,500 meters, it actually did reduce the time to get to 1,500 meters. So it actually made the runners faster.” (05:08) (Dr. Brian)

“Taking about a 12 mg capsule about forty-five minutes before doing weight training also increased the number of repetitions that they could do at seventy-five percent of their max with a standardized rest interval.” (07:02) (Dr. Brian)

“Interestingly enough, there are several mechanisms and I’m going to give you the three top ones. So, the first mechanism is that [Capsaicin] is increasing, very likely, calcium release in the muscles. And so, the more calcium that gets released, the increased contractability and strength you get out of the muscle. Also, it looks like it increases fatty acid oxidation, another source of energy and increases the amount of power out of the muscles. And the third is that it decreases pain.” (08:21) (Dr. Brian)

“In fact, Capsaicin or having some spicy peppers, like jalapeño peppers, can boost your exercise performance and also for weight lifting and strength training as well.” (09:45) (Dr. Brian)
