  • Today’s guests are Sarah Halpin, Mim Walker-Khan, and Anita Abayomi. You might recognise Sarah from Everton FC’s content as she’s a fierce Toffee and one of the matchday presenters. She’s also a ‘Best in Women’s Football content’ 2020 FCA Silver Award winner and a brilliant speaker. Currently spearheading BBC Sport’s Black History Month content, Mim strongly advocates for women of colour in her work as a freelance journalist and has also written for gal-dem magazine, the Guardian, Dazed, and the IAAF. Writer and presenter Anita co-founded Goal Diggers UK – England’s first black female-led football podcast - and has featured on Sky Sports, Nike, The Athletic, and more. They were all tasked with giving a Ted-Style talk on their burgeoning football careers – the highlights, the realities, and how you can follow in their footsteps. Sarah tackled presenting; Mim’s subject was writing, and Anita focused on podcasting. These talks took place in person in West London and here are the highlights.

Monique, who has a Sports Journalism BA from the University of East London, vlogs via her own Youtube channel and creates brilliant content with her eldest son Raphael. • Today’s guest is Nicole Chui, a London-based creative, embroidery artist, and Victoria Park Vixens goalkeeper. You may have seen the brilliant sneakers Nicole designed last year, or her FEM FAM zine which explores streetwear and DIY culture by women worldwide. Or some of her embroidery art – she was named on the Evening Standard's 25 under 25 list in 2019 and recently made a ‘Glorious’ embroidered artwork that featured Manchester United players in their 21/22 third kit. Or some of the fun social content she makes with her grassroots team. This conversation took place over Zoom after the exclusive Jersey Upcycling workshop she hosted in central London.

  • Today’s guest is Hattie Crowther, fashion designer and lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University and the University of East London. The designer is best known for the bespoke football corsets (and progressive visuals) she showed at London Fashion Week for Spring Summer 2021– singer Mabel has worn one and Jorja Smith commissioned one – and they've been featured on The Face magazine's website. The British Fashion Council sponsored her master’s degree in menswear at the University of Westminster – a real coup for Crowther whose non-binary clothing really celebrates her northern, working-class roots and is inspired by her friends. This conversation took place over Zoom ahead of the exclusive MKRLAB workshop she hosted in central London.

  • Today’s guests are Chelsea midfielder Tino Anjorin and Acid FC founder Ed Cowburn. Tino, who just went out on loan to FC Lokomotiv, is a box-to-box midfielder who signed for Chelsea as an under-9s player. The 19-year-old made his senior breakthrough under Frank Lampard in December 2020 when he started Chelsea's Champions League home group stage game against Russian side Krasnodar. He’s into clothes big time. Ed Cowburn founded the disruptive London-based design studio Acid FC and it is really hitting its stride as Soccerdelic™ purveyors-in-chief (by psychedelic means) and Red Star FC’s 2020/21 adidas kit designers. Imaginatively retracing the club’s history in toile de Jouy sketches featuring famous players, supporters, and the stadium, these excellent green home, and red/white away kits were used to educate school children about the local area. This conversation took place in person in West London.

  • Today’s guests are Lisa Evans, Ruth Davies, Sophie Hird, Jameela Elfaki, and Fadumo.
Lisa, who transferred from Arsenal to West Ham after we recorded this, is a pacey winger who‘s won 12 trophies throughout her career including league titles in Scotland, Germany, and England. She is also a UEFA We Play Strong Ambassador and vlogger.

Ruth is a contemporary artist whose work is characterised by its brightly coloured, illustrative aesthetic as it contemplates the female football gaze. Her paintings have been featured online in British Vogue, Grazia France, and Shukyu Japanese football magazine.

Sophie is a fashion designer who upcycles football jerseys to create brilliant separates — western shirts, shorts, and more — that are made to order. Indie band Sports Team have worn her pieces and this Bricks Magazine quote sums up her work: ‘Fighting football’s historically stereotypical toxic masculinity with flamboyantly camp 17th century inspired looks, and resisting the waste of mass-produced fashion through made-to-order pieces and completely second-hand fabrics.’

Jameela is an English-Sudanese photographer, art director, editor, and DJ based in London. She is the founding editor and art director of the independent magazine and platform AZEEMA, which launched in 2017 and centres women and non-binary people from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.

Platforming scene elders and new talent, she’s held down a year-long Radio 1 residency, appeared in the Dazed 100, and is committed to pushing 160bpm+ dance music into the mainstream and the future.
Denai Moore is a genre-less multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer with influences as diverse as Frank Ocean and Bon Iver. Her songwriting prowess is evident in unapologetic, heartfelt lyrics that are delivered with devastating soulful softness. She is also the chef-founder of Dee’s Table – a vegan supper club dishing up modern, plant-based Jamaican cuisine.

  • Today’s guest is Remi Burgz, host of BBC 1Xtra's Weekend Breakfast Show and rapper Shaybo’s official DJ. The radio personality’s die-hard love for Afrobeats (she’s Nigerian) is no secret and her infectious energy has earned her the nickname ‘The Local Energy Provider’. When she’s not hosting festivals, and LGBTQIA+ safe events as part of Rêveur Collective, or supporting Manchester United, she also shouts out emerging artists in ‘Remi’s Recognition’ – a series she writes for Sistem Magazine. • Welcome to The SEASON podcast series two and it hits differently. It’s still a football and fashion conversation but host Felicia Pennant (SEASON zine founder) takes you on a journey around London as we bring together some incredibly inspiring people to deep-dive into how the worlds of fashion, football, music, design and more are colliding in 2021. Personally, professionally, and creatively with practical tips. The goal is to counter the male, pale and sometimes stale state of modern football culture. Make sure you subscribe to never miss an episode.

  • Today’s guest is Eartha Pond, a footballer, councillor, keynote speaker and campaigner. The ex-Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs player won the FA Cup, Premier League and Championships in America but never played for England, before being elected a councillor and receiving accolades like Sports Teacher of the Year. Passionate about breaking down barriers for girls in sport, she’s part of Nike’s #StrongerWithSupport campaign centered on the importance of sports bras and shows off her entertaining ball skills in the video. She has also raised over £100k for GrenfelI Tower fire survivors and was named a ChangeMaker in the Evening Standards: Progress 1000. I’d heard her name and seen her in passing at matches well before I met her properly and she is incredibly inspiring a black woman pushing for change and succeeding.

  • Today’s guest is Daisy Deane, a stylist and creative director. Chances are you’ve already seen and admired her work, given her clients include Ella Eyre, SoccerBible, Nike and SEASON zine of course. Daisy actually approached us with a shoot she and photographer Rebecca Naen did with future SEASON cover star Ocean Lewis in early 2017 that went up on season-zine.com. But we didn’t actually meet until 2018 when Daisy styled me in Nike’s 2018 World Cup campaign. Great day, great team, great pictures. After that, she styled the ‘UNPC FC’ main fashion editorial in issue 05, spotlighting four fans of so-called underdog team which was shared everywhere. Then we were on a panel last year talking about fashion and football culture. Daisy is at the forefront of a new generation of stylists authentically shaping the football-fashion agenda, memorably styling fans, players and managers alike and, most importantly, she’s a football fan herself.

  • Today’s guest is Tyra Mills, a youth worker, Chelsea FC Foundation coach and U23 Spurs player. We first met at Stamford Bridge a little while ago and had a good chat about being passionate Blues fans and navigating football as black girls. Since then, she won Player of the Tournament at Romance FC’s Spring Kicks tournament in May and has been quite the jetsetter training at Real Madrid, heading to the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and Lyon for the Women’s World Cup. Girls are DMing Tyra for football advice and given her infectious and positive energy on top of everything else- I really can’t shake the feeling that she’s one to watch in this space.

  • Today’s guest is Raphaelle Moore, 1/3 of Fashion East, a non-profit talent incubator founded by Lulu Kennedy MBE that has kickstarted the careers of huge British fashion names like JW Anderson and Henry Holland. We met FROW at Liam Hodges in January, quickly established we were ‘unicorn’ Chelsea FC fans and debated whether to take a picture with Hector Bellerin (she did, I didn’t). Raph turned up to record with her arm in a sling, having broken her wrist playing in goal for Wonderkid FC, but assured me that shouldn’t put anyone off playing!

With unprecedented access - it’s football as it really is. Not gonna lie, I was sceptical when Matt told me he was quitting his job to focus on this but it’s truly incredible and eye-opening what his project has been able to achieve.
