In our final Tit Talk episode for Season 3, Rosalina explores an intriguing (but small) study exploring how breast milk might aid early breast cancer detection using ctDNA. Published through Cancer Discovery, she discusses how this study uncovered a potential noninvasive screening method for pregnant and postpartum women. Rosalina unpacks the study's findings, discussing their implications for early detection and their possible influence on healthcare practices and insurance coverage. Join us as we uncover the fascinating potential of breast milk in breast cancer screening.

For this season 3 finale, we've saved the best episode for last. Rosalina and Shauna explore the intricate relationship between cancer and personal identity. They reflect on how the perception of being a "cancer patient" evolved from diagnosis to different life stages. The discussion spans how others perceive them, the challenges of disclosure, and the balance of embracing cancer as part of their story while maintaining separate personal spaces.

In the third episode of Tit Talk, Rosalina guides us through a study featured in JAMA Oncology in November 2023. Examining data from nearly 50,000 women in the UK, the study investigates the potential link between vaginal estrogen therapy and breast cancer-related mortality. The study's findings reveal no evidence of an elevated risk. As always, Rosalina encourages listeners to stay informed, seek advice from healthcare professionals, and feel empowered to make decisions that align with their well-being.
In this third season of the podcast, we had a dedicated episode on sexual health, where we spoke to medical oncologist and sexual health expert Dr. Laila Agrawal on a misconception about hormone-positive breast cancer and the use of vaginal estrogen. It's an episode worth catching up on, especially since discussions about women's sexual health are often overlooked.

In this episode of "Tit Talk," Rosalina challenges the prevailing misconception that breast cancer only affects older people and reinforces that no one is too young to get cancer.
She highlights the concerning statistics reflecting the rising breast cancer rates among young women under 40.
Due to the heightened rising cancer rate, Rosalina introduces the "CheckMate" initiative pioneered by the Brem Foundation, which offers a free Breast Health Quiz to empower women with a comprehensive understanding of their breast cancer risk factors. The core message behind CheckMate is to underscore the profound significance of early detection. With one in eight women confronting a breast cancer diagnosis, early detection significantly enhances survival rates.
The episode concludes with Rosalina stressing the importance of self-breast examinations and promoting candid conversations with healthcare professionals about breast health, breast density, and genetic testing. She underscores the growing need for a greater emphasis on prevention among young women, emphasizing that organizations like the Brem Foundation and the Young Breast Cancer Project play a vital role in providing essential education on prevention for the younger population.

While Shauna wasnât actively seeking out clinical trials during and following treatment, she felt it was important to be a part of the data considering her age and type of breast cancer. To her benefit, Shaunaâs clinical trials were all low-to-no risk, participating in data collection at NYU, logging her caffeine intake, providing genetic information, and doing an at-home interview.
Itâs hard to see the immediate benefits of these trials, especially when almost everything surrounding breast cancer is painful and mentally taxing, but Shauna details the importance of the bigger picture, providing insight to others and pooling resources for the inevitable future patients.

In this episode, Rosalina and Shauna are joined by Andrea, a young breast cancer survivor and healthcare advocate of Mexican-German descent (her mother is Mexican, and her father is German). The conversation explores Andrea's personal journey with breast cancer, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic while she was studying for her Masters in Budapest, Hungary. She shares the challenges she faced in managing her diagnosis in a foreign country where she didn't speak the language, and the complexities of returning to the US due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Upon her return to the US, Andrea faced some significant challenges with her healthcare insurance, and she found that the support she was hoping to receive from her parents during the early stages of her diagnosis fell short, leaving her to navigate the diagnosis alone.
As she acclimated to life back in the US, she became involved in a health literacy project aimed at improving patient outcomes in the Latino community. The episode highlights Andrea's contributions to the health literacy project in Orange County, California, which aimed to educate the Latino community, especially Latinas, about women's health and the importance of mammograms, and other related health topics. Both Rosalina and Andrea, who are both Latinas and first-gens, shed light on cultural barriers, healthcare disparities, and the stigma surrounding cancer and preventative care within the Latino community.
