Alex here! Today, I'm sharing the first episode of Dice Exploder's Third Season, a discussion on the Risk Sheet from Psi*Run by Meguey and Vincent Baker.
Dice Exploder is a podcast that invites a different co-host to bring a game mechanic on and discuss why it works, or even why it doesn't! It's been an awesome podcast so far, super educational for a new designer like myself. The podcast's community has also been really supportive and have given me lots of ideas worth exploring in my own projects.
I'm stoked to give you the chance to listen to this episode while I keep gearing up for the future of Wait, Roll That Again! this year. Stay tuned!
***
On the season 3 premiere, I’m joined by John Harper, designer of many games featured on past episodes of Dice Exploder including Blades in the Dark, Lasers & Feelings, and Agon 2e.John brought in the Psi*Run risk sheet, a fairly complex dice resolution mechanic, known generically as Otherkind Dice. The risk sheet is such an elegant piece of design, packing essentially a whole game onto a single sheet of paper, and being so clear in both how it works and how you might tear it apart for your own ends. If you’re a new designer, or even just looking to get back in touch with the basics, John and I agree that hacking this thing is a great place to look.
It’s good to be back.

Welcome back to Wait, Roll That Again!
This week, I run a playtest of the Spooky Game I’ve been developing, now called Fright or Fight! My goal is to test the central mechanics, and see how the story-world of the game comes across!

Welcome back to Wait, Roll That Again!
On this episode, big challenges arise in the game design process, which leads to a step in adifferent direction.
But first, Clayton Notestine from Explorer’s Design joins the show to talk about layout and visual design. These elements are really important to a game’s final presentation, so I felt like it was time to start thinking about those elements a bit before it was too late!
You can find Clayton’s work, templates, and articles on his website here.
Then, we talk about making mistakes in game design, and how I rediscovered the core elements of the Spooky Halloween game that make me excited to keep designing this game!
Thanks for listening, and thank you again to Clayton for coming on the show! If you’d like to support the show, please share it with a friend and leave a review

Welcome back to Wait, Roll That Again!
On this week’s episode, I start the process on the biggest part of design so far - the character options. I want the players to feel like they've got lots of options to explore in the game, and meaningful choices to make.
To start this conversation, I brought on designer and editorial director at Possum Creek Games Jay Dragon to talk about the process behind character design! Thanks to Jay for coming along to chat! You can find Jay's work on the Possum Creek Games Patreon and Website. You can find out where to find the show here: https://waitrollthatagain.carrd.co/

Welcome back to Wait, Roll That Again!
On this week’s episode, I take the tips from the last few weeks and apply them to my first pieces of design for my TTRPG project.
There’s one key conversation I felt like I needed to have before I sat down to design some mechanics. I wanted to learn about resolution and dice, so I spoke to Aotearoa-based designer Michael Sands (Monster Of The Week, Three Dooms) about what makes dice mechanics work.
Following that conversation, I got right to the drawing board and put some words to paper. I came up with a basic idea of the system, and I ran it for two of my players. To find out how it went, you’re going to have to listen on…
