  • Welcome to this week's bonus episode as I share a new concept for the Winging It Travel Podcast. This is an immersive audio episode about my 20 km return hike to Garibaldi Lake over one night and two days. I share my experience hiking up with forest sounds and hiking poles, my reaction to the fantastic views of Garibaldi Lake, and the ups and downs of camp life. The elevation was 900m from the parking lot, with most of the elevation occurring in the first 6km of the hike towards the campground and vice versa back down the next day.

Along the way, I collected sounds, spoke into the camera for a real-life reaction, and had a fantastic coffee product to share. I combined these with post-hike responses to give you the sense you were there with me on the hike. In this episode, we embark on an unforgettable journey along the stunning Garibaldi Lake Trail in British Columbia. Join me as I hike through dense forests, across scenic meadows, and up to the breathtaking Garibaldi Lake with crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Along the way, I’ll share tips for tackling this challenging yet rewarding trail. We’ll set up camp at the beautiful Garibaldi Lake Campground for an overnight wilderness adventure. Canada is one of the best places in the world for lake views, and this one is no different. This is a true hiking adventure in Canada and one very close to my home city of Vancouver, just over an hour's drive away. This is a must when visiting the area!

I am excited to share this new type of episode with you; let me know what you think. I hope it provides you with that travel experience and valuable hiking tips for Garibaldi Lake.

  • Welcome to episode 155! This week, Shafik Meghji rejoins me for a second time to discuss travelling in Patagonia. In this episode, we will touch on Cordoba, Argentina's second city, and why it isn't on the traveller's radar for travel in Argentina.

We discuss the best times to travel to Patagonia, the issue of over-tourism, and the different entry points into the region. We explore the landscapes and attractions of Patagonia's Argentine and Chilean sides, including the Peninsula Valdes, Welsh Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park, and the Lake District. Patagonia can be expensive, but we mention the affordability of travelling by bus in the region and highlight the Tren del Fin del Mundo, the southernmost railway on earth, and travelling by boat in Chile to reach Patagonia.

Shafik talked us through his previous travels to the region when he visited Ushuaia, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Shafik has travelled in the region for the last two decades and was based in Buenas Aires for a year in his younger days. He is an expert in the region, and I am so glad to get his thoughts on Patagonia. Thanks, Shafik, for coming to the show; we will get that hat trick in!

    Takeaways

Patagonia is a vast region spanning the southern halves of Argentina and Chile, known for its dramatic landscapes and wilderness.

The best times to visit Patagonia are spring + autumn to avoid the peak summer crowds.

Overtourism is a concern in popular spots like Torres del Paine.

Comfortable buses offer amenities like meals + entertainment.

The End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina, was built by convict labour + is now a tourist attraction.

Ushuaia is the main port for ships to Antarctica, and visiting Antarctica is a popular tourist activity.

Cordoba, Argentina's second city, is known for its beautiful architecture, universities, and surrounding natural attractions.

Travelling independently in Patagonia is possible with some planning, and the public transport network is reliable.

Train travel in Europe is a great way to explore the continent.

  • Hello, and welcome to episode 153! This week, I am joined by Marie DeCosse, the founder and CEO of Nomad Travel Groups, which launched a week before this podcast episode's release. Read below for a description of what Nomad Travel Groups can offer.

As founder Marie DeCosse sat with friends gazing at the tranquil waves ebbing from the coast of Saboga, Panama, a conversation unfolded about life's joys—relationships, freedom, and travel. This conversation sparked a realization: why work tirelessly only to savour such moments a few times a year?

With a background in international tax and a passion for travel, Marie created NOMAD to transform conventional home and time-sharing models."This generation was given an early taste of what work-life balance means. We've learned we don't need desk chains or lengthy commutes to succeed," says Marie.

Recognizing a gap in the travel industry, NOMAD was born—a home-sharing service that caters to a new breed of travellers seeking long-term stays without logistical headaches and monetary constraints. NOMAD simplifies travel by curating Travel Groups aligned with location and property preferences, fostering connections, and streamlining arrangements—all at an accessible price point. We are the accommodation solution for the modern-day traveller.

Marie joined me to discuss everything with Nomad, and I asked every question I could think of to give the listener the best possible idea of this new business within the travel space. I also get to hear about Marie's upbringing in Madascagar and Bangladesh and the return culture shock of going back to the USA. Marie is half Senegalese, so we hear why that country is a must to visit, especially because of the people and food. We hear about Marie's dream place in Europe to be located in the future, her challenges with setting up a new business, why being Senegalese culture is her favourite, and so much more!

It's a super exciting product and a great conversation.

  • Hello, and welcome to number 152! This week, I am re-joined by Dave Seminara, the author of Mad Travelers: A Tale of Wanderlust, Greed, and the Quest to Reach the Ends of the Earth, which I read.

I find Dave fascinating to speak with; he is always welcome back on the podcast. Today, he is back to talk about a recent trip to the Baltics, a month-long trip to Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. We talk about hidden gems in those places and why these areas are some of Europe's quietest during the summer. There are recommendations for bear tours, castles, small old towns and great city breaks. We also discuss the political situation and how it impacts people in those countries and travel.

We also get to discuss one of Dave's most recent YouTube videos about his father's hometown of Niagara on the USA side. He explains how this once thriving city is now desolate and struggling in modern times.

This episode has many other subjects, such as climate change, regional accents in the UK, the production of travel YouTube videos, and the Amish community. It was a fascinating chat. Thanks, Dave, for coming back!

Hello, and welcome to Episode 151 with Erin Hynes, a returning guest. This episode is different from the previous one as Erin quit her job to travel the world for 165 days this year (2024). As we have both been on 'big' trips in recent times, I thought it would be great to hear about Erin's trip first and foremost and then dive into some intriguing questions about what we both thought on different aspects of travel post-COVID.

We dive into the reasons for Erin quitting her job to travel, each part of the trip, including Tanzania, Greece, Sri Lanka (and more!), the cost of the trip, what her backup fund was, what she thought of travel in a post-COVID world, whether it was as transformative as her last big trip in 2017 and so much more! There is an important lesson and story in this episode about the need for travel insurance, which everyone should take note of, and very apt for this episode's sponsor, too!

Erin is one of my favourite people in travel, and she has an awesome podcast named the Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast. She took a break during her trip but plans to get stuck into a new season in the coming months towards the end of the year. She is also among the most respected travel bloggers out there, with her Pina Travels blog, which is great for all sorts of information on many countries and subjects related to travel.

    Check out the links below.

I last saw Erin in person during my big trip last year in Toronto, and it was great to hop on a call for three hours to record an episode and catch up! If you have any questions about our trips, please send a note to my email below or DM me on Instagram.

    Enjoy. Be inspired!

  • This is a review of my last 250 episodes, 150 of which have been guest episodes. The first half is a fun little game as I record on the fly with a number generator on Google, asking it to pick a random number between 1 and 150 (concentrating on the guest episodes). Whatever number comes up, I will give you thirty seconds as to why you should listen to that episode. A little test for my memory!

The second half is more stats and reflections on the previous 250 episodes, including lessons learned, the different stages of the podcast, what is to come for the next 250 and much more! Thanks to everyone tuning in, and here is to the next 250!

    Cheers, James

  • Hello, and welcome to Episode 150 with Ross Borden, the founder and CEO of Matador Network. First of all, thanks for joining me on this journey to the 150th guest episode; it has been unreal!

So, what better way to finish the first 150 episodes than with a special episode with Ross, who has created one of the biggest online travel brands in Matador Network? Matador is the leading online travel publisher with over 140 million monthly video views. Fast Company has named it one of 2024's Most Innovative Companies for its groundbreaking use of AI to create the most accessible and accurate AI travel assistance, GuideGeek.

In this episode, we will discuss Matador's humble beginnings at the top of a mountain in Peru, why Ross turned down a finance internship to work with a travel company in Kenya, how he befriended a travel agent in Madrid to travel Europe for free while improving the agent's sales, and one of his favourite experiences swimming with whales in Tonga.

We discuss Matador Network's current trajectory with GuideGeek, the AI travel assistant. We talk about how AI can change travel in the future and why we should embrace it. Ross is currently one of the leading people in travel using AI.

It is an episode combining wanderlust and an ambition to share amazing travel stories with the world (Matador Network). Not only will you be inspired to travel the world, but you will also be inspired to write that first travel blog or start that first travel podcast or YouTube channel. Whether Ross is talking about his dirtbag travel lifestyle in Peru or his vision for AI in travel, there is something for everyone in this conversation!

    Thanks, Ross, for coming on!

    Enjoy. Be inspired!
