The Troubled Teen Industry has some explaining to do and this week Caroline Cole and Rebecca Mellinger Grone are here to tell us why. They are the co-hosts of the podcast Trapped in Treatment (produced by Paris Hilton & Warner Brothers) that weaves together personal accounts with historical detail and expert opinions to shine a light on what really happens at teen behavior modification centers and how this billion-dollar industry has flourished for so long. The industry that promises hope and help to parents struggling with making the best decisions for their kids... is actually handing out more trauma than actual therapy. As Kat, Caroline, and Rebecca talk about these programs, in which some have ZERO licensed clinical staff & are run by teams focussed on dollar signs, this episode will leave you not just shocked, but pissed off.
Caroline Cole is an entrepreneur, policy advocate, and Special Advisor to the International Coalition Against Restraint and Seclusion. After 2 Ā½ years in a ātroubled teenā program, she knew she needed to change the system. In her work, Caroline draws from her own experiences with trauma to drive social change. Caroline, alongside Paris Hilton, penned the federal bill, The Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act, and has successfully passed laws across the country to prevent youth from being abused in institutional settings.
Rebecca Mellinger Grone harnesses the power of entertainment and media platforms to drive social change. Head of Impact at Paris Hiltonās media company 11:11 Media, she is reforming the "Troubled Teen Industry" through policy change, public awareness, and providing direct assistance for institutional abuse survivors.

This week, Kat is talking about Performative vulnerability again. Performative vulnerability is what happens when we use sharing (or oversharing) parts of our lives in order to gain something in return, such as attention or feelings of superiority. It can look like an example of altruism on the outside; risking judgment for the greater good of others feeling less alone or more connected. However, the intentions of those who engage in this are far from selfless. And although it is super frustrating when we see this displayed around us, this episode is less about how we can call others behavior out and more about how we can learn to pay better attention to our intentions and our actions.

This week, Ally Fallon is back for round two of YNT, right ahead of the release of her new book, Write Your Story. Her core message for readers is that they already have the magic to be the hero in their own lives ā and the number one way to harness your main character energy is to write down your stories. Using her proven 8-step framework, Ally expertly guides readers to tell a more interesting story and begin to make meaning and live with more purpose.
In this conversation, Ally and Kat talk about the importance (and discomfort) of doing things they aren't good at, how we are making meaning regardless of if we want to or not, and what it's like to have a therapist as a parent (possible foreshadowing for Kat's future).
