Orange is the New Black is a really great show that we immediately start criticizing the worst parts. And then we criticize ourselves for being harder on women-made media. And then we criticize Francis Ha. We also talk about how sexy Laura Prepon's Alex is, and how we forget every other character's name. Lots and lots of discussion on queerness. Our Living As A Feminist Question Of The Week is "Does being in a hetero relationship mean you are hetero?" As always, we provide interesting wishy-washy answers. -
This episode is dedicated to fan art, fan fiction, and fan culture! Is it feminist? Is it capitalist? Is it (metaphorically) colonialist? We have the answers (no we don't). We have a very special guest, Mel, offering us her mind-blowing insights into all things "fan" and uses the word "possibilities" a lot. Our Living As A Feminist Question Of The Week is "How should feminists respond to name-calling?" We drop the C-word a lot (not c-word as in cancer and not as in the show). We talk about Gilmore Girls (spoiler: Rory and Jess kiss), Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin, Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, and Ms. Frizzle and Mary Poppins' first date. -

All Game of Thrones all the time! This episode we discuss the woman and queer characters (and the straight man hotties too of course) in the TV series. There are NO SPOILERS for the BOOKS, but it is ridden with spoilers from all three seasons. Plus, we discuss "pride" in our Living as a Feminist Question of the Week, since Toronto's Pride was happening and it seemed topical. -
...and we're back! Sidle up for this very special Season 2 premiere where Kara and Kayte have enough time to superficially touch on gender dynamics, character relations, naked chests and more as seen in Arrested Development season 4, The Great Gatsby (book) and The Great Gatsby (newest movie), Star Trek Into Darkness, Tomb Raider (newest game), Elementary, Doctor Who, Girls, Inside Amy Schumer, homosocialism in Shakespeare and some stories about cats falling of balconies. Plus, Living as a Feminist Question of the Week: Can plastic surgery be feminist? SOPHMORE YEAR STARTS HERE. -
Catching up on the feminist issues in the three videogames we've been playing over the winter -Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption and Guild Wars 2 are all deeply interrogated in terms of gender kind of not really. We mostly talk about identification and making our sims make out with everyone. In celebration of our spirit animal tv show 'Girls' returning, we replace our Living as a Feminist Question of the Week with a new segment, Girls Update. -
We have a million suggestions on how to make Les Mis more feminist without compromising its amazing ability to make us openly sob, weep, and become dehydrated. Plus, our Living as a Feminist Question of the Week: Can/should women cry? -
What happened with the second season of Homeland? Does it still have interesting gender politics? Are you responsible for the success of feminism? Do you hate Kathryn Bigelow? Do you hate Ys in names that shouldn't have Ys? -
Overfeministing the winter's biggest movies (at least those we have seen). The Hobbit, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook and a little bit of Life of Pi (by accident). We also tell you if you can go to the movies with a nonfeminist (follow your heart) -
Finally! The Podcasters tackle the latest Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn Part 2, including spectacle and excess, horror, the feminine aesthetic in cinema, and say almost nothing at all about anybody's "dreaminess". Plus the Living as a Feminist Question of the Week, presented by three childless women: How should a feminist raise a child? Join the conversation at http://www.awebsiteofonesown.com! -
In this conversation about both Cloud Atlas (movie) and Cloud Atlas (book), the panel talks about linearity, racism, women as revolutionaries and/or empty vessels, adaptation and, honestly, mostly how super-handsome and dreamy Ben Whishaw is. Plus Living As A Feminist Question of the Week: Is "Movember" misogynistic? Spoilers for: Cloud Atlas (movie), Cloud Atlas (book), The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Hunger Games (all). In the second consecutive episode that's mostly about how great-looking Ben Whishaw is, we also talk about the newest James Bond, Skyfall, including the problematic implications of the shower scene, M as (inevitable) mother figure, homoeroticism and trysexuality, Bond as anxiety about the failure of traditional masculinity (or maybe of nation) and Ben Whishaw's fabulous, perfect hair, face and clothes.
