  • Have you ever wondered if the pouch reset diet is a good idea or too extreme? In today’s episode, Dr. Edmund Chen joins us to break down the myths and misconceptions surrounding pouch reset diets in bariatric surgery. Dr. Chen dives into why quick-fix approaches can be dangerous and emphasizes the importance of building healthy eating habits and staying in touch with your healthcare team. Together, we discuss the goals you should focus on—like non-scale victories and realistic milestones—and why BMI alone doesn’t define your health. This conversation is all about redefining success and staying positive on your journey!

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[:29] Check out the BariNation online membership community.

[2:30] Is the pouch reset diet a good idea or too extreme?

[5:23] Going back to the basics of tracking and measuring your food.

[7:17] Faithfully using the Bari Good Day Checklist found in the BariNation community to stay on track.

[9:21] Talk to your healthcare provider when you have a concern.

[12:50] Dr. Chen gives the listener advice on this chronic disease.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Pouch reset diets are not a healthy approach to eating. They mimic the highly restrictive calorie intake of the initial one to two weeks after surgery, which is not sustainable or balanced long-term.

Consistent healthy eating habits and regular exercise will help you achieve your weight loss goals. Being mindful of what you eat and making nutritious food choices will significantly affect your overall well-being.

Many people let their emotions trigger unnecessary panic about their progress. Instead, focus on setting realistic goals and lean into support from the BariNation community. If you’re feeling discouraged, contact your medical provider—they can guide you through the steps needed for your unique situation.

  • Should you eat carbs or should you not? That is a common question we see not only in BariNation, but also everywhere we look on social media. Today we have Bariatric Registered Dietitian, Andrea Luongo on the show to share the truth about carbs. We discuss what carbs are, what role they serve in our bodies, and which are best for the bariatric journey. She discusses how to utilize different types of carbs and why whole foods are so important. Lastly, she talks about why self talk and self trust are essential when it comes to eating. Tune in, and don’t forget to join us in the BariNation Membership Community or become a Patreon Supporter, where we continue all of our conversations with bonus episodes!

We are excited to announce that Andrea has joined our panel of experts in BariNation and will be leading monthly nutrition classes! She is such a wealth of knowledge, we cannot wait to hear her first talk.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    [2:50] Andrea introduces herself.

[7:34] Why do carbs get such a bad rap in our world?

[12:12] Is it ok to have lower carb intake after surgery?

[15:42] How does our body utilize carbs?

[18:39] Why is fruit such a feared carb?

[23:06] Why are whole foods so important for our diet?

    [30:32] What is emotional hunger?

[32:20] April shares about her challenges being on a GLP-1 and eliminating the hunger desire.

[37:09] Why does self talk and self trust matter?

[40:53] Learn how to get more access to Andrea through our membership and Patreon!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Carbs are the body’s preferred source of energy and are necessary to keep our body from using muscle mass.

Your body needs all macronutrients - protein, fat, and carbohydrates. If it is missing one, it will have to utilize the other and then you’ll be under feeding certain parts of your body and cells, or your body won’t be able to create certain cells.

It’s not about doing everything all at once at the same time, perfectly. It’s about learning these things as we go and implementing them and experimenting along the way to see what works for your unique body.

You are ok to eat, it's about a balance, and not a perfect balance. Start to learn your carvings and it’s ok to have carbs, just learn which one your body is asking for.

  • Can you get all the protein necessary with a plant based diet or is animal protein the best? This is a question that we get in the community, so this week we brought on bariatric registered dietitian and obesity specialist, Jeannie Boyer. Jeannie is super involved in our BariNation Membership, and is such a delight. We discuss why a variety in protein is so important, and what the difference is between plant and animal proteins. Jeannie explains how to ensure you are getting the right protein and what to look for in a supplement. Tune in, and don’t forget to join us in the BariNation Membership Community or become a Patreon Supporter, where we continue all of our conversations with bonus episodes!

Exciting news for bariatric beginners: every Wednesday in November, Natalie is leading a beginner bariatrics meetup where those who just had surgery, are entering the bariatric realm, or are getting started with their pre-op can come and learn what the journey may look like. Natalie will be sharing some great tips, and success stories to help you ease your mind.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[2:25] Is there a difference or is there a quality difference between animal vs. plant protein?

[5:25] Why is variety in protein so important?

[6:59] What is a good protein supplement and how should they be used?

[10:17] How can BariNation Members utilize Jeannie?

[12:31] What should people look for with their protein sources to ensure they are meeting their bariatric guidelines?

[13:38] If you are interested in learning more about this topic, head over to Patreon to join us for Jeannie’s bonus episode!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

The difference between plant and animal protein is how efficiently our bodies can absorb all of the nutrients in them and how complete the amino acid profile is.

Your body isn’t designed to do protein shakes and liquid protein for life, as your body continues to heal, the goal is to get nutritional needs from whole foods.

Variety in your diet is going to serve you the best!

  • Have you heard of intuitive eating and wonder if it’s right for you? Or maybe you’ve tried it and realized it just isn’t working. This week, Kelly Broadwater, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, is on the show to discuss how to make intuitive eating work for bariatric patients, and when the right time is to introduce it on your journey. Kelly talks about why adults struggle with intuitive eating, which just gave us such an ah-ha moment! Tune in to learn how to learn self trust and discover if intuitive eating is right for you.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[1:20] Kelly introduces herself and talks about how she helps people.

    [4:39] What is Intuitive Eating?

[10:55] How does Bariatric Intuitive Eating translate to bariatric patients?

[14:17] What’s the best way to navigate food choices after bariatric surgery?

[18:02] Why do adults struggle to eat intuitively?

[26:50] How do you learn self-trust?

    [29:44] What is disordered eating?

[40:47] Kelly shares resources for those wanting to learn more about intuitive eating.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Intermittent fasting is not something you do right after post-op. This is ideal for when hunger has returned and you are in a maintenance phase.

It’s all about eating good to feel good, not to be good. Are you feeling good? Are you feeling energized? Is it fueling your body right?

A great principle to coping with emotions is kindness, and learning new ways to nurture yourself without using food to cope with emotions.

We all know it’s important, but it seems to be the first thing that goes out the window when our schedules change or things come up. This week, Jason is talking about his movement routine and how he stays motivated. He shares how to create a consistent workout routine and why setting goals for yourself is key to a successful journey. Tune in today for some great tips on creating your own movement routine.

[4:08] How does Jason navigate needing to be perfect with a workout routine?

[7:20] What are some good goals to set for yourself?

    [9:20] Is movement important?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Movement will look different for everyone, just because someone is moving a certain way doesn’t mean you should be moving the same. Do what is right for you!

If you are intimidated by the gym - go on YouTube and get familiar with the movements. That way when you go into the gym you will feel more comfortable.

  • We have another fantastic episode for you this week! We know what it can feel like to experience overwhelm when it comes to exercise and movement after your bariatric surgery, so we brought on JJ Rodriguez, an expert in this space. JJ talks about how to approach a fitness, health and movement routine, what the differences between the three are, and what is going to be most impactful. He describes how to create goals that align with what you are trying to do, and why one person’s fitness routine isn’t the answer for the next person. Tune in for a wealth of knowledge from JJ and walk away with some great tips to get you started on your journey.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    [1:56] JJ Rodriguez introduces himself.

[5:20] How does JJ reframe exercise to have a positive connotation?

[11:50] True or False? Exercise will not help bariatric patients lose a significant amount of weight after surgery?

[17:41] Why is the scale going up when you are working out so hard?

    [23:41] Why should you exercise?

[30:01] JJ explains why movement should always be goal based.

[31:28] What is a prescribed exercise?

[35:48] What are the three different buckets that people fall into on the exercise spectrum?

[41:39] Should you do cardio after your weight training session?

[45:49] How do you shift your focus as life events shift?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Fitness happens in the gym, weight loss happens in the kitchen.

The prime reason to exercise is to move it or lose it. The quality of life and functioning is the prime reason we should move.

Identifying your goals is the most important thing, because it helps depict what your exercise plan should be.

You must move every day and find consistency with your routine to see the changes in your health and life.

Tune in to learn more and get some great tips!

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[4:28] How can we quiet the media noise that’s in front of us every day?

[8:51] Dr. Rogers discusses how obesity medications work and why there is a push for movement right now

[17:18] When you lose the lean tissue, especially if it's muscle, can we gain any of that back?

[25:43] How can you determine what exercise or physical activity is best for you?

[31:55] Where do you start when it comes to movement to maintain what strength you have?

[37:24] If someone is considering having bariatric surgery or onboarding an anti obesity medication, where should they start when it comes to being active?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

When you are carrying excess body weight, you need more lean tissue to maintain your body size, to hold up your frame, to walk every day, to feel and function. Lean tissue includes bone, muscle, organs, tendons, connective tissue, when you shed some adiposity, you will naturally shed some lean tissue also.

Every bariatric patient goes into their post op life in a completely different sport physiologically. One person’s movement level will be different than someone else’s so don’t try to follow a one size fits all program.

When getting started, tune in to what your body really needs, and what feels good, then build from that. Decide what is one thing this week that you can really prioritize in terms of new behaviors that you need to start doing, start with those and take it from there.

  • Do you feel out of control around food, even after you thought you had your eating habits under control? We’ve all been there and many of us continue to struggle with overeating or emotional eating. This week, we brought Dr. Adrienne Youdim on the show to talk about accepting our hunger desire and understanding what it may actually be telling us. She describes what our bodies are experiencing when we reach a stress state and performs an exercise that anyone can use to help calm your mind. She is such a joy to listen to, and we have no doubt that you will walk away with a new understanding of your hunger!

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[2:24] Adrienne introduces herself and shares about her background.

[5:30] Natalie shares her experience with emotional hunger.

[7:17] Adrienne discusses what emotional hunger is.

[12:57] Adrienne shares what happens in our bodies when we experience a threat or stress, and how to pause.

[20:05] Adrienne discusses the basic principle of the beginner’s mind.

[24:26] Adrienne talks about the reactivity piece and implementing new habits.

[26:43] Take a moment and be guided by Adrienne to experience a pause.

[28:38] Dr. Youdim explains why taking 5 breaths is so powerful, and the ripple effect it can have on the world.

[38:00] What is the one thing that Adrienne is hoping listeners take away?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Anytime you feel out of control, pause and take five deep breaths. This is what you can control, and it will have an immense impact on how you react to the thing that feels out of your control.

Each day is an opportunity to approach a problem in a new way. Don’t focus on how you handled it in the past, or what you want to do in the future, just focus on the present and pause, and determine how you want to react in this moment.

Emotional hunger is not something that is wrong with you, it is a human experience. You have the ability to pause and to start practicing acknowledgement of what you are experiencing and a kind invitation to start exploring what that can mean in your life.

  • Are you having Bariatric surgery this summer and feeling a little nervous about how you are going to manage recovery? If so, you are in luck! July 25th marks the 5 year anniversary of my (April) surgery (BariNation Co-Founder). I talk about what my experience was like having my vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery over the summer and the actions I had to take to make a full recovery. While this summer you might be feeling it’s not going to be the best summer of your life, I am here to tell you that every summer after will be more glorious than any you’ve had before. Tune in to learn more about my journey and learn some amazing tips if you are headed into surgery this summer. You’ve got this!

    IN THIS EPISODE:

[6:01] What is your job post surgery? What should you be focusing on?

[8:05] Why is community so essential during recovery?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

There really is no “best time” to have surgery. The best day to have surgery is the day that it gets scheduled.

The time after surgery is a gift to yourself, you have to protect it and clear your schedule post surgery.

The price for the rest of your life, the thing that you’re going to have to pay is a summer that looks and feels very different than any summer you’ve ever had. Every summer after surgery will be even more glorious than the last.

  • Are you unclear what life might look like after bariatric surgery? Or do you have high expectations that all of your struggles will be cured post-op? In our bariatric support group meetings, we often have people with unclear expectations, or even disappointment when it comes to their post-op results. This week, Dr. Mimi Tan joins us while we talk about the most common unrealistic expectations people have, and how to approach surgery in a realistic way. Dr. Tan explains how she prepares her clients pre-op, and we talk about the fear of failure that some people might experience after surgery. Tune in to learn more about expectations and what life after surgery may look like.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    [1:29] Dr. Tan introduces herself.

[3:56] What are the most common unrealistic expectations that Dr. Tan sees patients have when it comes to recovery and their life after surgery?

[8:22] Why does Dr. Tan think people go into their survey having unrealistic expectations?

[10:44] What does Dr. Tan think is the most important thing to do as a patient going into surgery?

[13:51] How does Dr. Tan set her clients up for success?

[18:44] What is the fear of failure that some people might experience after surgery?

[25:10] Dr. Tan talks about regain and insufficient weight loss.

[27:12] What are realistic expectations Dr. Tan talks to her patients about?

[32:46] What is one thing that Dr. Tan wishes listeners and bariatric patients everywhere knew about what life after surgery is like?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Having open communication with your surgeon is essential for your post op journey. Talking about your wins, but also your struggles to understand what further options there are is so important.

Bariatric surgery is an imperfect tool and it will not fix all of your issues.

Life after bariatric surgery is complicated. Obesity is a lifelong disease and is a lifelong struggle for most people.

Remember that everyone’s journey is their own. Comparison is a thief of joy, don’t compare your results to someone else’s. Comparing yourself to yourself is really the only marker you should use.
