Soooooomebody once told us this podcast was gonna roll us, we aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed. The iconic Shrek is finally on the podcast. We paired this episode with Monsters’ Nasty Beast Tea clocking in at a 6% ABV that got us real silly.

Keeping it in theme with Valentines and romance, Beto chose a movie he hadn’t even seen himself yet: “Past Lives.” Similar to “Blue Valentine”, it explores themes that, although aren’t overdramatized, are far too real to ignore. It won’t make you cry, but you might sulk for a while if you’ve experienced what Nora and Hae Sung have gone through. We paired this episode with High Noon Vodka Seltzers, clocking in at a light, but delicious 4.5% ABV.

Happy(?) early Valentine’s Day! Everything you thought about love was wrong, and this movie is here to tell you why! Milo chose what he thought was a really sad movie and it really is a sad movie; it is a movie that happens every day. People fall in and out of love and we talk about why it was an interesting decision to show the parallels of people falling in and out of love. We paired this episode with Arizona Spiked Beverages that were a delight to try out. Stay up to date with us on Instagram: @buzzedcandidandcritical.

After a long hiatus, the boys are back in town and boy, does it feel good. Bryan’s movie has been marinating in our minds for the last few months and we did not hold back because after all, we are CRITICAL, but it’s all in good fun. We look forward to recording and posting new episodes regularly! We paired this episode with a mixed variety 12 pack of Happy Dad Seltzer’s. Keep up to date with us on IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical

Witness me! We took a ride down to Valhalla, but unfortunately, are still mediocre. We talked about George Miller’s 4th installment in the Mad Max series: an absolutely amazing dystopian, action movie with a killer score, beautiful landscape scenes and some crazy stunts and car chases! Chris had been sitting on talking about this one since the podcast was conceived and it did not disappoint. We talked about it over a Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier, a tasty and refreshing lager clocking in at an unnoticeable 6.3%! IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical

Starting a new season off with a bang and a recent release! Beto chose this movie and what seemed on the surface as a run of the mill horror movie, ended up being a lot more than we expected as we did a deep dive. However, once made clear, most of us raved about how they effortlessly used horror tropes mixed with a good story blended with heavy themes of addiction amongst other things that are pretty relevant right now. We paired this with a whopping Voodoo Ranger Fruit Force clocking in at a high 9.5% ABV! @buzzedcandidandcritical

What happens when you get together some of the greatest minds of all time? You get this podcast. In all seriousness, however, this was the first movie the group watched together and it was the first movie not readily available to rewatch from home since it’s a recent release so this episode is the epitome of candidness (but also buzzed and critical). The new format fit this movie best, given it’s length and density in information and the fact that it’s based on history, but this was one of the funnest and most interesting episodes to date and it ranges from topics on the SAG AFTRA strike to the morality of Oppenheimer’s role in the Manhattan Project. This episode was fueled not only by White Claw’s Variety #1 pack, the pioneers of hard seltzer still at the top of their game and by Wing Stop’s Atomic wings (punintended). Whether or not you want to believe the lore of the creation of Flaming Hot Cheetos, it’s an undeniable fact that the conception of the snack has a huge part in how companies tailor to their market. The Flaming Hot brand has spread into popular culture and its use in other foods has paved the way for creative ways to integrate Hot Cheetos into different recipes and drinks. Whether Richard’s account of just how much of a hand he had in the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos were exaggerated or not, this movie still highlights that the fruits of your labor do pay off in the end. This is a heartwarming movie that might hold a special place for those who can relate to Richard’s childhood and growing up. It’s an under the radar movie that everyone should watch at least once and we implore everyone to check it out while it’s still on Hulu! We drank Cayman Jack’s Variety pack that was perfect for this flamin’ hot (lol) weather! Keep up to date with us on IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical

“Know your place. Keep your place. Be a shoe.” A movie about preordained positions in a class system, global warming, and the pursuit to try to get out of a system that keeps people down, Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi/action movie was Beto’s choice this week. We’ve already talked about “Parasite” before and it was interesting to see how the ideas developed in this movie were elaborated upon more in Parasite. The themes and ideas presented in this movie are straightforward and just like “Parasite”, are a commentary on society, something that Bong Joon Ho excels at. Beto wanted to keep the theme with our drink this week and we had Mikes Hard Freeze (lol), a fruity alcoholic beverage, reminiscent of slushies on a hot summer day! Disclaimer: At the time of this recording, there were some technical issues that were not noticed until after the completion of the episode. There is static in the audio and there are few instances where the audio does cut off, but it does not take away from the great episode that it is! We recorded this earlier in May and were distraught when we thought we wouldn’t be able to post it, especially since it was our first episode with a guest and with a movie we all loved. Abel and Milo agreed on talking about Spike Jonze heartfelt drama about love and connections and the introduction of AI into human relationships. We paired this episode with the incredibly light Belgian pale ale, Delirium Tremens, clocking in at an unnoticeable 8.5% ABV. IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical

“I’m in lesbians with you.” This week on the podcast, Chris chose Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and unbeknownst to some of us, he invited one of our good friends, Jose, who is an expert in all things Scott Pilgrim, including the graphic novels and video games. We talked about this action packed comedy (or comedy packed action?). Although there were some aspects that haven’t aged the best, we were still able to enjoy it for what it is and it’s perfect casting and it’s perfectly paced story and how much of a great comic/graphic novel adaptation it was. We paired this episode with Crown Royal’s ready to drink Washington Apple and Peach Tea and since Jose doesn’t drink, he threw back a refreshing Jumex Strawberry Banana Nectar. Happy 1 year anniversary fellas! Who woulda thought we would have made it this far? 20+ episodes in our first year isn’t too bad. Given all the obstacles we had to overcome, we still push forward and look forward to more years and more episodes to come. On this recap, we formally introduce Beto and his tastes and we go over some of our favorite episodes and drinks we’ve had and just pure randomness that encompasses us as a whole. This episode was fueled by Trulys’ new Red, White and Tru pack, which was some of our reintroduction to Trulys’ new recipe which was delightful.

A love letter to the arts, but a big, middle finger to the industry. Damien Chazelle split audiences with his divisive epic period film about Hollywood, from its infancy with silent films to its first "talkies." There were some who did not like it at all and there were some who absolutely adored his vision of how much the industry has changed. The 3 hour run time might scare some off, but this movie feels like what it's like to be on a roller coaster while on drugs: the highs are high and boy, are the lows low. The variety of perspectives we see from the ensemble cast and the parallels between characters highlights Chazelles brilliant story telling and how his characters are dynamic and complex and not to mention the amazing jazz score. Although it may not have had the box office success, Damien Chazelle continues to impress with his directing talent and this will be another of his movie that will age like wine. This was a fun overall watch and we had fun debating our thoughts about it; kudos to Bryan for picking such an interesting film that even made us divisive. And shoutout to Jarritos for coming out with Cantaritos, a hard soda based off their delicious sodas that fueled this episode. IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical

This week, we tackle Beto’s choice, Bong Joon-ho’s award winning black comedy/thriller. We talk about the motifs, the symbolism and the reality of the effects of capitalism and the climb out of poverty and we also talk about the conflict between classes, but mostly about the poor against the poor. Who is really the parasite in this movie? Does the ending signify hope or does it highlight the dreadful reality of what it takes to achieve wealth? We paired this with Soon Hari Soju which, if you have a sweet tooth and a knack for high ABV beverages, is right up your alley with a variety of fruit flavors at 12% ABV. An action/comedy with just the right amount of each, “The Nice Guys” blends both genres perfectly; it keeps you on edge with the action scenes, but it also alleviates that with physical gags and hilarious dialogue by all characters, especially Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. This was just an overall fun and entertaining watch. We paired this movie with Mother Earth’s Cali Creamin’ vanilla cream ale, clocking in at an ABV of 5%; it’s a light, flavorful, and creamy beer with just enough hints of vanilla to remind you of a cream soda. As we kick off our season 2 finale, we sat down and reflected on our past episodes and our previous format and we made a creative choice in this episode that will be continuing going forward and we are happy with the results. This might be one of our best episodes to date and we hope you feel the same. This last episode of the season was Bryan's choice. "Sicario" deals with a lot of morality issues and there is a lot of character development that we took a deep dive into because we wanted to see what was motivating each of the character's. By the end of the episode, some of us were at odds about the ending scene, but some of us left with a different point of view that we had not initially thought of and that's the beauty of this movie and all movies: we can all take away something different away from it. We paired this episode with Belching Beaver's Deftones Phantom Bride IPA, which was delightful, citrusy, and light enough to enjoy more than a couple and not feel too buzzed. Stay tuned and up to date with us on IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical and we will be back with season 3 in a couple weeks; cheers!

"Shitballs!" A special episode this week: we decided to watch and talk about the next movie in the "Knives Out" series since it was readily available to us. Employing the same tactics as the first one, "Glass Onion" paints a perfect picture of what was going on during the early pandemic (which made so much sense considering they filmed it during peak pandemic) and it presents a brutally honest of what it's like to be a billionaire with all the money in the world with absolutely no sense of what consequences their actions will cause. What's enjoyable about these movies besides the ensemble cast, Benoit's detective skills paired with his Southern accent, and how basically every single clue is presented to make us try to figure out what's really going on is that things aren't always what they seem: Director Rian Johnson knows how to craft a complicated murder mystery and simplify it at the end, making us slap our forehead and exclaim "wow." This week, we tried Michelob Ultra Seltzers, clocking it at a light 4% ABV; these were tasty and refreshing and very easy drinking.

A murder mystery/whodunnit with an ensemble cast and a plot twist that challenges your idea of what should happen in a murder mystery. This week on the BCC Podcast, Beto chose "Knives Out", a movie he believes to be one of the best movies released in recent years. This was a fun and entertaining change of pace from the last few movies with darker themes although it does present a picture of the state of current events of the last few years that were too obvious to not take note of. We paired this episode with Nütrl, a vodka seltzer made with fruit juice. It was a nice and refreshing change of pace from the whiskey we had last episode and it had a really good taste. Stay tuned and up to date with episode releases on our IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical!

"I just can't beat it"; these are the words of the main character, Lee, who has experienced a terrible loss and can't bare to be in his hometown where the tragedy occurred. Milo chose this weeks movie and after holiday delays (Happy Holidays btw), the fellas were finally able to talk about one of the few grounded movies on our list of movies we've talked about. A story about grief, loss, growth, and ultimately, redemption, "Manchester by the Sea" follows Lee as he makes his way through another loss in his life and has to take on a challenge, one that we believe was meant to give him purpose, another shot at being happy. This all sounds so ambiguous, but even in the movie, the tragedy isn't presented until an hour in and we don't want to ruin the chance for you to experience the first of finding out what happened. As we enter the new year, we continue planning more projects to enhance your experience of listening to our podcast and we hope you stick around for what's in store!

“Jawohl!” On this weeks episode, we talked about the horrors of war and the reality of being a young man on the forefronts of a world war. However, we looked at it from the perspective of their Germans, something not typically done when it comes to movies about war. We all had a lot to say, more than some of us even expected and given the grim reality of the film, we enjoyed talking about it and similar to the joyful, small moments in the movie, we were able to let loose and take the moment in. Because our alcohol connoisseur was sick this week, the boys just sipped on a classic: Modelo. IG: @buzzedcandidandcritical
