  • This episode of #CoffeeProtocolPodcast we talk about Jaseem and his journey towards winning the Title of “Indian Barista Champion -2023", but also about struggles, anxiety, pressure and stress during the coffee championship. We talk about coffee culture and the start of Jaseem's dream to win the title.

We also talk about Blue Tokai Coffee, Santosh from Thirdwave, Mithilesh the preceding Champion, Suhas, Sandra, Hrishikesh, Bhavnish of Coffee Genetics, James Hoffman, Lance Handricks and of course National Barista championship, and WBC.

    Ninedotcoffee-

A name you would have heard or come across if you follow Indian coffee championships and competitions. If not let me introduce you to this jack ass of an amazing person.

Jaseem Abbas, a curious mallu who resides in Bengaluru. As the stereotypes go he does work in “tech stuff”, he owns and runs a company that makes money for him, so he can spend a large portion of it on coffee machines.

Yes, he is a home brewer, who got so into coffee, that he started making machines that could be fit into his home machine. (Did I mention he is a geek), his love for coffee and brewing got him into the world of coffee competition. Started with AeroPress competition and then attempting his hand in National Barista Championship in 2021. In his first year of trial, he didn’t even qualify through his first round, because of technical reasons (he didn’t make 3 sets of drinks in 15 mins) but did an amazing job of how much ever he did.

Then he came back the next year and ended up Winning the championship. A home brewer winning a Barista Championship was unheard of, but he did it, and did it how.

  • Madhu Agro !

This amazing, mother-daughter Duo ! who are not just planters and now getting into Roasting, they are fierce and borderline crazy daredevils  of life!

Nirmala (75 years) and  her daughter Rajshree take cafe of their Coffee farm in Koraput  in Odhissa, a region that is growing coffee for some time now but only started to get some attention in the recent past. The farm has mostly (if not only) tribal workers helping at the farm. Some of the stories they shared was shocking, beautiful and some hilariously crazy.

Nirmala ji and Rajshree both talk about their incredible journey towards doing what they are doing, its nothing but inspirational. Nirmala ji doesn’t act her age at all, its Scaringly Awesome! Rajshree who has worked in so many different places and different industries to come and join the farm was nothing but daring move.

Together they are amazing duo who are beyond crazy “kind”, dedicated, hands on and just pure awesome people. I was glad I could experience a bit of working with them and knowing them. I wish the best to them always.

Also If you are in coffee (and even if you are not, just listen to this pure bliss-full episode)

  • Hello everyone, and welcome back, to Season 4 of our Coffee Protocol Podcast. First of all, lots of love to everyone that we are here. Its been a bumpy ride, (but so are all the adventurous rides ).

A lil while ago I had gone to attend this Food & Beverage Expo called as "Ahaar" in Delhi, at Pragati Maidan, apparently the biggest of such sort that happens in India. Coffee is a big deal here, as lot of coffee and roasting machine and coffee equipment suppliers, roasters, consultants and syrup and packaging companies and lot many (associated to running a cafe) come to this Expo.

I thought it would be nice to go meet some of the coffee folks and ask them a very genuine and "super non-original" but important question of what they would think is the biggest change that will take place in the coffee industry.

I got some really interesting answers ( not questionable "interesting" that we use to describe a weird cup of coffee, after the owner asks how the coffee was) but genuinely interesting as these were some opinions that came from the people from the coffee industry.

Please do give your feedback on this... and yes do share your thoughts on what other stories would you be interested in the coming episodes ( while I plan some crazy ones too )

    lots of love

  • Tasing can be as simple or as complicated as you can make it ! Yes it isn't difficult to start with, but yes some practice will make you get into the groove and make it interesting for yourself. Coffee Cupping is getting quite famous and also trendy, but then the roots of the same is based on something we basically don't mention in current days (or seldom do). Also even you are not a certified taster (or professional) you can still taste coffees and be pretty good at it. The key is very simple/basic. Listen to the episode to know more. Keeping in the vibe of this espresso edition, it's a very small episode but packed with a lot of information. Do check it out, and while in the podcast list, check the others out too.

Espresso Shot Edition - is a collection a few tiny (micro /nano / pico ) podcast with lot of information, and doesn't need a lot of time to listen to.

    Coffee Protocol Podcast - #podcast #coffee #Information #education #tastingcoffee #coffeecupping

  • Under the edition of Espresso Shots, another information packed small micro - nano - pico - episode about Coffee & People. How the both are always connected and go a long way back in history, in present and also will go in future.

    listen, enjoy and share!

    lots of Love

  • Did a few Espresso Shot Series some time back. That means, Short, sweet, packed with a lot of flavours (information) and yummy (just like the espresso I served during my National Barista Championship Finals - recently :D )

Mini Coffee Episodes... to get through quickly but with loads of information.

    Hope you like them.

  • Kathyayini Muddaiah & Rakhee Vishwanath, are the two amazing young ladies that power up @unakki_Coffee_Collective. So here is the scene, Kathyayini, Rakhee and I were in the Car, on our way to @bluetokai Koramangla, (with @itsonlycoffeebaby)  this was for the public cupping of the new harvest from producers doing specialty coffee processing for the first time. While we were in the car, we had recorded this episode. So it honestly seems like a really nice, honest conversation between us, in the car. If you plug into your earphones close your eyes, you can technically seat next to me in the passenger seat while we indulge in this really amazing conversation. Coffee, people, age, work, ethics, quality, struggles, fun, opportunities, gender, generations, work, respect, love, marriage, family, support, coffee processing, specialty coffee, Indian Coffee and more coffee was the topic for the conversation.
    we did discuss and mention about @kerehaklu @baarbara @asif @bluetokai @jameshoffman @kolliberri @pranathi @aeropress @anaikadu @hippla @nesar @lynn  and more.
A lil about Unakki Coffee Collective :
    Unakki
A Coffee collective community, from Joldal - Palya, Chikmagalur dist. 3700ft - 5000ft
Aim - to recognise the hard work that goes in coffee farms & help them get recognition
We started exploring the specialty market very recently from 2020. We aspire to start a revolution in specialty coffee from our region. We focus on improving the quality of our sourced coffee by focussing on all the stages post harvest processing.
Formed by two women Kathyayini and Rakhee with backgrounds of Architecture and Software, the idea was always to celebrate good coffee.
"UNAKKI" is derived from a "den of snakes" which has been in our region for more than 400 years. It is worshiped by villagers as it has withheld all the natural calamities and stayed still.

  • A Family residing in the city, move into a Coffee farm and started making some really good coffee.

Meet the family behind ĀnaiKādu Nisha , Kurian, Anaika & Bella. How their life came to a crossroad, that led them to the world of coffee, and eventually into #specialtycoffee.

New into this side of coffee, processing coffees for the first time, from being not sure enough to being nervous on how the community would react to the coffee, to actually selling all their specialty processed coffee (sooner than they expected). This is an incredible story of how a (relatively small) coffee farm holder churned some good coffee out. Also getting some really commendable #specialtyrobusta, which is what they primarily grow.

This podcast is extremely special and unique as it is one episode but there are two parts to the episode, the first half before they got into processing specialty coffee, whereas the other half is post finishing the season and selling all their coffees. I wanted to do an episode like this so that you all (and me) could hear to both parts of the story.

We talk about corporate life, farm life, how did they went about starting their journey into specialty Coffee, the capital needed, the challenges involved in doing specialty coffee for the first time, cost incurred, if there is any profit at all in doing coffee or specialty coffee.

We also spoke about, Harshita from EarthSong Cafe, Prasanna (ex - Harley), Pranoy, Blue Tokai, and more.

    The artwork from ĀnaiKādu

The Ānai Kādu artwork has been turning a lot of heads and rightly so. Everything from the logo to the hand-drawn detailed images accompanying the postcards for each of the processes were done by Kurian and Nisha’s good friend and artist and textile designer, Meera Naidu

  • I have had the pleasure of meeting a few women coffee producers, but meeting someone who runs the entire coffee farm and managing its work, and getting her on my podcast was the first for me. Meet Pranathi Shetty, she currently owns and runs "Kolli Berri" coffee farm by herself along with her mother-in-law.

I met her a year ago (virtually) for a prospective work that we planned to do, but sadly that couldn't happen, but I was pleased to meet her IRL for the first time too last year. I knew i wanted to get her on this podcast at some point, to get her take and share her story. She is a 'Bombay' girl studied business and worked in the banking industry for 11 years but now she owns and runs a 'huge' Coffee plantation and a gas station' in Chikmaglur, India. The story of this transformational journey itself is pretty awesome. But what is more amazing, is the story in the details, of how things were, are and hopefully will be in this sort of 'Man dominated' Coffee growers' world. Everything that has happened 'the good, the bad and the weirdly ugly', most of that is shared by Pranathi in this podcast episode.

For me this episode is nothing but pure inspiration, and the heart touching stories and experiences Pranathi shares is just pure bliss. Nothing is easy, but also nothing is impossible. This episode is exactly that, conveyed through the conversation.

Listen up this episode and see how it is to be a Single Woman, Running a Coffee plantation in the south of India, all by herself and the constant support she receives from her mother-in-law is nothing short of a motivational movie.

Hope you enjoy this episode as much as I have enjoyed making it, the starting of the episode has a background sound of Pranathi taking roll calls and doing the daily weighing of the coffees (in the absence of her writer the day I was there).

  • HO! HO! HO!  Ep 9 is OUT!

This latest episode is an amazing conversation with Raghunath from Aramse Coffee. We had thought of doing something together for a long time, and then after a loooong time, we recorded this episode. This episode got recorded sometime back and finally I was able to release it today, which happens to be Christmas. So this fits perfectly as a podcast you can listen to while on your holiday break. Trust me when I say this is a fun episode, busting a lot myths, talking about James Hoffman, the mighty Indian Filter coffee !, other brands too. Decolonising the flavor wheel was a topic we both got a little deep into, which was fun. It was a fun (laughter filled) episode automatically.

If you already know about Aramse Coffee, you might have seen their amazing videos on youtube (if not - stop reading this, go and watch that first and follow them there too), we talk about social media, and specifically the behind the scenes of the shoots, what it takes to get that perfect shop of espresso or a drip of coffee into the cup and so on. I believe they have one of the finest videos online, and its not just the beautiful video, but the way them explain things, which is nothing but pure awesomeness - if you see their video on the coffee prices, you would know what I mean

I initially thought the episode was a bit long, but upon listening to it a few times (over editing), I am just enjoying it and I feel that you all will enjoy it too.

    we also talk about:

    @flairespresso

    @Bloomcoffee

  • All the way from NAGALAND!

I have been holding off to edit this episode for a very long time. Gor a lot of reasons; 1. This episode is clsoe to my heart, the experience that i had in Nagaland with @atsi @dili & @lichan was beyond amazing. I did not record the podcast with Dili and Atsi (yet), but I do want to share their unique and amazing stories too.

This Episode is about @lichan and everything behind @etecoffee based in Kohima, Nagaland. If you have not been there, trust me on it and just go! You will not be disappointed or regret it EVER. Everything about Nagaland, the people, the hospitality, the roads, the natural beauty, food, drinks (including water bottle shops :D) is just beautiful and warm.

And if you have seen the instagram handle of Ete, you would agree its one of the coolest coffee places on social media (and real). If you have not , go and check it right away.

In this podcast we discuss a lot about what went behind starting ETE and how a Roasting business started from roasting in a kadhai (tawa pan). What all roles does Lichan play in running this beautiful business and what were the sacrifices behind. I hope you will like this episode. While recording this episode, it was quite late in the night - around 11 Pm, and by Nagaland standards, that was way Past the normal Deadline.

Find out what an amazingly talented, beautiful, dedicated and gem of a person Lichan is and some really hearty stories that he shares, cause thats Justice A CUP !

Cafe is situated at Billy Graham Rd, Kohima, Nagaland 797001

  • Round Table Coffee Bakch*D (talk)

One of my dreams was to do this, a podcast session (multiple over a year), where multiple people from different walks of life talk about coffee (casually), and a total free (non interview format) conversation.

This is Raw, unedited, no script, just honest and (almost) free conversations between people who are a coffee consumer at heart first and friends (Second). I wanted to call it Round Table Coffee Bakchod, cause of one main reason, to make it sound not serious, i think we have taken Coffee too seriously, and thats what the first half of the name suggests 'Round Table' (a corporate -serious kind of affair) but then the last part coffee bakchod, means some conversation which is light hearted (not too serious).

Idea was to take serious topics (or important topics) and have a friendly conversation over it. We will have may be one episode, once in a while and have one base topic, but thats it, conversations are not restricted or monitored. This episode is about the first experience of specialty coffee/ first equipment into specialty coffee and our understanding around it. Cause "First Time is always Special" so people say, but honestly it comes special, once you understand things and have a connect with it. (yes still talking about coffee ;).

Got Some amazing bunch of people in this episode, one from the law background, one form medical research, one from tech, one from software, one a marketing specialist and yours truly. Hope you will enjoy this unedited and raw conversation, as much as we did while we recorded it ( a while ago).

The episode is live on all the major podcast hosting website/apps (link in the bio as well) - #CoffeeProtocolPodcast

Lots of Love & like always - Lets make Coffee Simple !

  • Bloom Coffee Roasters !!
Damn, this episode has been long overdue! I had so much fun recording this episode and i thought that since it requires less edits (cause Sharang said so in the episode) i would get this episode out quickly. But.... ( i am not going to share my sad story) .... I am happy that this is up. Cant thank Sharang enough to take time out to do this on behalf of Shivansh and Tejasvi. These people are awesome, these people are REAL. Musician, to studying construction, to photography to architecture, to having their own Take out, these 3 people have done a lot and somehow got into to Coffee. (good for us). Incidentally they had just took part in the @Aeropress Championship at @qbf and were heading home ... (in that road trip of 5 hours)  sorry 5 and a half cause @Tejasvi was driving, during that trip is when the company was conceptualised and how (listen to the entire explanation in the episode). We discuss, @timwildelboe, @jimseven, coffees from @msp @papakuchicoffee and of @bluetokai and @savorworks and lot more, if you are looking for some fun and honest conversation, tune into this latest episode of the Coffee Protocol Podcast.

    Little about Bloom:
Before anything else we at Bloom Coffee Roasters are lovers of delicious coffee. As great as Speciality coffee is, it can often be a little unapproachable if not intimidating,  especially to those unfamiliar with It. We want to make it a little bit more fun, approachable, and available to everyone, while sourcing and roasting some of the best, most delicious coffees that India produces. The perception of coffee being a bitter beverage, made just to wake you up is changing! We want to make you experience just how delicious, and flavourful great coffee can be. When we say speciality coffee is for everyone, we mean everyone involved in the supply chain of coffee, from the planter to the person who brews and enjoys a delicious cup. When we’re able to achieve this, we get closer to making speciality coffee truly sustainable (Environmental, economic, social) for everyone!

    little about Sharang Sharma:
I’m a singer/songwriter turned coffee roaster. I’m passionate about trying to roast delicious, sustainable and traceable coffees. I have a band with my parents called the Red Brick House where we play songs/poems written by the mystics, Indian as well as other writers and poets. I have been roasting coffee for about 2 years now, and I feel that just like music you can never really know how to roast coffee, you learn something everyday, and try and improve yourself everyday.

  •  I was not sure, how I would have structured this interview:-  a) Because I was not sure how to Approach a brand like theirs, b) they have been interviewed like a thousand times, and what else could i get from them than those interviewers with years of experience, c) but I knew I had to get him on the podcast, because it is one of those stories which I feel a lot of people would be curious about. So i decided i will not go with any script at all ( like most interviews)  I am glad that after knowing for a while now, I could get him on this podcast to share stuff that is incredibly valuable, if you ever wondered what a crash course in business and marketing would be like, this is it. Along with the amazing story of Sleepy owl of course.  I enjoyed a lot speaking with Arman, and if you are planning to listen to this episode, trust me sit down with a pen and paper to make some notes. We talk about the starting days of Sleepy Owl to future plans, to the core team to exploring options, the logo and the name to the controversial advert on social media. Its all in there, plus a lot of informational guidance through the eyes of an Entrepreneur ( I hope I spelt it right)  So go ahead, read it, enjoy it, and also Share it : )

    A little about Arman:

Arman Sood was always interested in entrepreneurship since his college days. In his 2nd year of Law School, he started an e-commerce startup, along with a friend, retailing Bar & Party Accessories.

After college, Arman joined Embibe, a leading tech start-up, where he worked as a Marketing & Communications Evangelist, and gained a deeper understanding of the day-to-day operations and functions of a business.

An entrepreneur at heart, Arman quickly understood the need to make real coffee available at home in the most convenient format, once he studied the coffee market in India and realised the gap that existed. Pioneering the new coffee movement in India, Arman got together with his friends – Ajai Thandi and Ashwajeet Singh, and launched Sleepy Owl Coffee in 2016. At Sleepy Owl, Arman manages Operations, Supply Chain, and Institutional Sales, and ensures that customers are happy and caffeinated at all times.

    About Sleepy Owl Coffee

The inception of Sleepy Owl can be traced back to three friends - Arman Sood, Ashwajeet Singh and Ajai Thandi, who despite their love for coffee, couldn't find a good cup when they needed it. Hence, they decided to brew their own and invented a product they loved. Today, the brand stands 5 years strong with a compelling product portfolio that includes Cold Brew Packs, Hot Brew Bags, Ready-To-Drink Cold Brew Bottles, Brew Box, Whole Beans and Ground Coffee. All of these are made with real coffee beans that have been sourced directly from the farms of Chikmagalur in Karnataka. Sleepy Owl has also eliminated the use of plastic in its packaging, and now uses 100% recyclable packaging which is sustainable.

Sleepy Owl's products can be found in over 1300+ general and modern retails stores across Delhi NCR and Mumbai with additional presence across the corporate and HORECA sector. The brand also ships pan-India through its online presence on www.sleepyowl.co, Amazon India, and BigBasket.

  • Ever thought of living life away from the City (FOR REAL). How would that be, this is exactly what Harshita and Her Husband thought like a decade ago, and finally after really hitting the toll of the City life and the fast paced & Hectic Work cycles they finally made the switch to live in the middle of nowhere. Technically, its in the Pench Reserve Forest, but still it is far away from the "City" life. Now living a life far away in the middle of a forest is not as easy as it sounds, I am sure a lot of us would have thought of doing the exact same thing, at some point or the other. You wont exactly know if it is the life meant for you, or not until you try it, and trust me staying there for a few days is NOT TRYING.

And in the middle of this Huge life Changing shift, guess what, Coffee did play an important role in the life of Harshita. We got in touch earlier this year, while i was travelling from Bangalore to Gurgaon on my motorbike. She got in touch and asked if I would like to visit her cafĂ© (yes there is a cafe that is in the middle of this FOREST, serving Specialty Coffee - including and not only @bluetokai coffee) and I was like, Hell yes would love to do that.

That's how we met and I feel so blessed to have met her and have connected with her. That's when I decided, more people should listen to her story.

    Harshita introduces herself as -

'A mum of two, looking to create a sustainable, slower and flavorful life. My work must reflect my ideologies.

EARTH SONG is a sustainable, souvenir shop, showcasing handcrafted goods from the region and also a café that calls for you to stop the hustle, wait patiently for your coffee and enjoy the simple pleasures.

  • **Correction in the podcast - Cold water fish is categorized as lowest acid producing food. As Cat was eliminating acid producing foods from her diet, for a period, she started from highest acid producing meats to lowest, resulting in fish being the last one she eliminated before being vegetarian."

I don’t think a lot of us think about things like what is the PH value of the food we are consuming, how alkaline or acidic is the next meal that we are going to consume? Well Not until its to a point that physical ailments starts to appear. We are always told to eat and drink healthy, but well how do we know where to start or with what to start? Does healthy Food means – organic food? And isn’t all Organic food always expensive? And How Does coffee play a role in something like this which is so health centric topic, does Coffee have attributes to affect our health too? Many more questions like these are answered in the Latest Episode – Episode 3 of Season 2, of Coffee Protocol Podcast.

This week on our Podcast, we have Catherine of @Howl&Kodama, who talks about food & health. Farmer – Consumer Relationship, how did she start her journey towards healthier food and determining what is healthy, how she got into Coffee, and what is her goal with Coffee, also how did the name – Howl & Kodama came into being and a lot more. I got introduced to Catherine by Dina (of @sapabakery) if you are in mysore ever - you cant miss this place (you should not)

Catherine Ganapathy of @howlandkodama is a foods trader, based in Mysore, Karnataka. • Coffee Protocol Podcast- Season 2 - Ep. 2: Photography and Coffee ----- an interesting combination isn't it? We are filled with photographs and videos all over social media of Coffees and cafes, and we go .... that is so beautiful or it looks so delicious. But do we wonder who took that picture or video? Do we wonder how difficult it could be to get that ONE PERFECT SHOT? Often with the arrival of smarter phone, we take it for granted that an expensive camera phone or a camera kit will just do the job and take good pics. It might be right, but what about conceptualization of a shot, working on behind the scene to create a vibe ? What about professionals who do that for a living? Photographers and videographers do make COFFEE look pretty darn Sexy. You see that everyday and pretty much everywhere.

For this episode we spoke to Saipoornima , aka @sashaokayplease, who is a chai lover, but has done a lot more professionals shoots for cafes and coffees for various brands. She speaks about how she got into photography, and what mistakes she made, but also a lot about those jargons we hear around photography that was - "wow", she also shares some tips and tricks to use your phone to the maximum and click really good pics even at home. She also gives a lil bite about " #sasharants" and more, do listen the episode and let us know how do you feel about it?

She runs a business called  @Whiteplatestories which is a food photography company and they recently launched a prop page on their website. Selling affordable and pinteresty props and backdrops to enhance your food photography if you might be interested. They have artisanal handmade boards, coffee glasses, vinyl backdrops & more under the brand of @foodpropsindia and @choppedandcarved. If you wish to get in touch with her for work, you can DM her on Instagram. (She prefers Texting over a Call - just FYI) ;)

  • What could be in common when we speak about coffee with a Dentist. ? What some of us might not know is that Drinking Coffee causes teeth stain, (Discoloration), along with that what other impact does coffee and other food & beverages have on our dental hygiene. What are things that we can do to prevent hampering the aesthetics and the health of our teeth and palate in general. How Bad breath resulting from Coffee, tea and other things can be prevented or taken care of.
Along with that some really weird questions like, does one dentist go to another dentist, or how often should we be brushing our teeth and when exactly is the right time to Brush our teeth, and some more interesting details related to Oral Health.
Do join into the episode and let us know if you think this was useful.

  • I always wanted to do something that had more than 1 season, and here I am happy doing it. This is the last episode of the 1st season, and as suggested by most of you (on the social media) we did a Q&A session. Got the questions from all of you as well, some really cool and some really intriguing ones too and also some controversial ones too. I enjoyed recording and editing it. I hope you have similar questions and would be happy to listen to the questions others have asked (i have negated the repeated questions ).

I am so happy to have come here 20 episodes ... its a lot of handwork getting more content made and get it across over #Podcast but its totally worth it, especially every time someone drops by and says, "thank you for that episode, it helped me". Thank you everyone for supporting this podcast so far. I cant wait to share what is on in the Second season of The Coffee Protocol Podcast :)

lots of love to everyone out there. hope you have a better days coming to you.

  • “Long way up”

An interesting trip and an interesting episode for a reason you might not be able to guess...

Truly a long way up ( and longer in terms of the time spend) riding from #bangalore to #gurgaon on the @theroyalenfieldhimalayan :)

This podcast episode is basically a lil sneak peek into the ride that I had the beautiful roads , the very amazing people I met and of course #coffees on the way , I had some kickass pour overs but also some #instant that I didn’t hate !

Lots of stories and a lil suggestions to everyone who might listen to this episode (towards the end), a bit about why I ride and mostly about the experiences and moments.
After all what is life?? A bunch of stories stitched together , some worth sharing some worth remembering.

So listen to this latest episode of #coffeeprotocolpodcast and lemme know if you do relate to what I have said.
