Often, we are our own harshest critics. We criticise, judge and tell ourselves the most negative thoughts and feelings.
Self-limiting beliefs are judgments or opinions about our strengths and capabilities that prevent us from achieving our goals and being successful in our lives. They are toxic to our mental health and our own worst enemy.

Stress can affect the quality of our close relationships. When life and environments get stressful our partners may feel we are not invested in the relationship. This can lead to interfering with or worsening our relationship.
Stressful situations such as financial, ill health, family dynamics, and work pressures are often the intruders in the relationships that may cause dissatisfaction.

Parents inevitably come to parenting counselling for many varied reasons. Parents may come to counselling through an event that has an evident and significant effect on their child. In other instances, the cause of your child’s change in mood, behaviour, and social or academic functioning is not evident.
Becoming a parent of a child and knowing how to parent are two different things. Most parenting does not come naturally, and there is no such thing as the “perfect parent”. We all make mistakes, so engaging in parenting counselling may be the best decision you will make for yourself, your child and your family.

We often hear about authenticity in the media, about people being real or not. What is being authentic and is it a big deal if we are not authentic, is that going to be a problem?
A big question, one we may grapple with on many occasions and why do we often conceal our authenticity and not be true to ourselves?

Anxiety may cause a serious inability to function to our highest capacity. The intense worry and fear about everyday situations can elevate our heart rate, breathe more rapidly, perspire, and feel shaky, or tremble and we have a sense of impending danger or panic.
Anxiety can be a normal feeling in stressful situations such as taking an exam, meeting new people or public speaking. However, anxiety becomes an issue when anxious feelings become excessive, all-consuming and interfere with sleep patterns.

Most people have experienced sleep struggles sometime in their lives. Insomnia is a disorder characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or getting adequate restorative sleep, these can negatively affect our health and wellbeing.
We often do not realise how important the health benefits of a good night's sleep are for us. Many important health-related things are being performed as we sleep such as our brain forming memories and processing the day’s events as well as pruning the information in our brain it no longer needs, making room for things it does need. Our body performs tissue growth and repair, allowing healing and restoration to occur.

Traumatic experiences can overwhelm your neurological system, the nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord and a complex network of nerves. When your neurological system is overwhelmed, it can lead to heightened sensitivity affecting your ability to manage life experiences, emotions and actions for many years after trauma.
So what is the window of tolerance you may be asking?
The window of tolerance developed by Dan Siegal, a clinical professor of Psychiatry describes the window of tolerance as the best state of ‘arousal’ or stimulation in which we can function and thrive in everyday life.

Shame is a powerful and complex emotion that can have profound consequences on our mental and emotional wellbeing and can significantly impact our quality of life. Shame tends to deeply ingrain itself in our sense of self.
Our sense of self is the perception we have of ourselves, the characteristics and traits that define us as individuals. When we lose our sense of self a gap is formed, a space in our identity. We may question who we are, and the inner critic's volume is turned up which may result in increased anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence, feelings of being a failure and loneliness.

In this podcast, I highlight a therapeutic approach called the Emotional Freedom Technique EFT, also known as tapping.
Life can be stressful and in these challenging times, the need for emotional resilience is paramount. When our emotional and physical systems are challenged and possibly compromised, we may feel out of balance, physically ill and overwhelmed with emotional turmoil.
Unprocessed emotional and physical sensations remain in our bodies. Our nervous system stays on high alert to protect us from perceived threats. These perceived threats are stored in the emotional centres of our brains. These are activated whenever a similar situation presents itself and reminds you of past experiences, memories and feelings.
Tapping may help you become a better you.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, we experienced the Winter Solstice on Friday the 21st of June, the shortest day and longest night of the year; days grow colder and the nights longer.
The arrival of the solstice and the change of season may bring us different sensory feelings that may remind us of past experiences, activating our responses in unexpected ways. Less sunlight and warmth have been found to affect our moods and emotions.
People often refer to their mood and emotion changes as the winter blues. The reduced level of sunlight in winter may disrupt our body’s internal clock and our levels of serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) and melatonin that affects sleep and moods.
Listen to the podcast for some tips and strategies if you are feeling uneasy in the cold winter days. -
All behaviour is communication. It is how we act or behave in a situation or under certain conditions. We all communicate through our behaviour in different ways depending on the context. When observing behaviour it is beneficial to remember that we need to look beyond the surface of what the person is doing. Behaviour communication involves the interaction between the person, their specific situation, their environment, and the other people around them. There is always a reason for the way we behave.
