Elizabeth Yarnell - Board-Certified Naturopath, Author, and Speaker
Welcome back to another week of the Dairy-Free State podcast. To round out 2020, I have quite a few excited guests ahead. This week's guest was so interesting to me! Elizabeth Yarnell is a naturopath, author, and speaker who created the patented (literally!) infusion cooking. So if you're interested in learning more from someone who avoids processed foods and shares her method of Dutch Oven cooking in a cookbook, Elizabeth is definitely someone to check out.

Josh: A newbie to the dairy-free world (and my dear friend) chats with me
Hey, everyone. I know I keep saying this but the pandemic has really been a trip for me. I've been busier than ever in my personal and professional life. Honestly, I feel very fortunate that things are working in that direction and not the other way around. But because of that, the podcast and other personal projects have definitely suffered. So that's why it took me so very long to get these episodes out. I was finally able to buckle down and publish these, so you'll see these come out through the end of the year, with "Season 1" ending at the end of the year.
I will be on the lookout for future guests and more topics. I'm interested to hear what you've taken out of this podcast, so if you have notes about things you've liked or things you'd like to hear more about, please let me know! I may include some solo recordings as well in 2021.
This was a really fun episode to record because I got to do it with a friend! Josh is dairy-free and diabetic and was at the very beginning of his dairy-free journey when we recorded this (which was at the end of May 2020 - see, I told you I'm running so very behind!) We talk about the wonders of milk alternatives, including macadamia milk! And, of course, the new trendy standard, oat milk. An update on the vanilla hemp milk: Yes, it was very good in smoothies.

Welcome to another episode of Dairy-Free State! This week's guest is Annie Wegner LeFort. Annie was a pastry chef around the same time she realized she needed to go gluten-free. What a torturous thing to be surrounded by temptation as you're changing your diet!

Jess Marie Larrain
Thank you for joining me for another episode! It's taken me a while to get these episodes up and running, but I really wanted to make sure I did my guests justice and took the time I needed to summarize our interviews properly. But, I'm back up and running with 7 new episodes for you, which you'll see come out in the following weeks! I'm so happy to introduce you to my guest for this week, Jess Marie Larrain. We had such a great talk about her journey to veganism, along with the obstacles along the way, and how early she knew that changing her diet was the right choice for her (her IG handle isn't @oldsoulopenheart for nothing!)
We all have to measure our needs on an individual level and listen to our bodies, but great guides along the way can also be the boost we need. For Jess Marie, The Vegan Starter Kit was an invaluable resource. One thing led to another from there, and she found social media accounts to follow, more research to do, and more products to look into. Much of her motivation to go vegan came from her commitment to all eight limbs of yoga, and she is a yoga and Qigong teacher specializing in practices for trauma and addiction recovery.

Vanessa Opal June - A Modern Aesthete
I have been excited about publishing this podcast for a long time! I interviewed Vanessa Opal June in late May, and we had a great talk about such a wide variety of interesting topics. I've been so anxious to share it with you all.
Vanessa said some things to me during our time together that have been rolling around in my head ever since, especially on the topic of self-care. She is studying for a Master's Degree in Art Therapy, and engages in all kinds of forms of creative self-care with her clients - painting with one, crochet with another - it all depends on the individual and what feels like care to them. (By the way, if you want to learn more about what creative method best suits you for self-care, take the quiz on her homepage.)
During the podcast, we talked about our similar food upbringings, where we've been finding food during the pandemic, her work as a therapeutic chef, and her yogic meditation and intuitive art services.

Episode 4: Jalisa
Jalisa became a vegetarian in 2017 in full after watching some documentaries. This kind of trajectory probably sounds familiar to so many of us. After watching Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead; What the Health; and Cowspiracy; Jalisa was inspired to give vegetarianism a go. However, it wasn't until she saw a documentary that made the connection between a plant-based diet and faith that she felt everything come full circle.
We talk about what Jalisa eats on her plant-based diet, her experiences with friends, and family, the questions she's sick of answering, and the importance of representation in vegetarianism, veganism, and plant-based diets.

Episode 1 of my Brand-New Podcast!
I can't believe it's taken me so long to get this podcast off the ground, but now that it is, I can't wait to keep going! I have had this idea rolling around in my head for a while now, and Mary was the perfect first guest to have on the show.
For years, I have thought about making a separate site to talk about chronic pain and chronic health issues. It always felt like a different side of myself - something that didn't quite belong on Dairy-Free State. But after talking with lots of people about how often the choices they make with their diets intersect with how they're managing their various health conditions, I had the realization that it's all connected for so many of us.
I kept trying to compartmentalize parts of my life, even though they flowed into each other behind the scenes every day. Putting chronic health topics front and center on Dairy-Free State feels more appropriate than ever.
Mary and I had an awesome conversation in March, before we had both been on self-quarantine for a while. Since then, she's really kept me inspired with cute mask photos, updates on her garden, and of course, delicious and inspiring meals almost every day. If you're looking for someone who has a curious and adventurous approach to food, look no further!
