Today’s episode is all about fireplaces and comes from a listener question we received, which asks “With regard to the cast concrete mantel that is often discussed, could you confirm whether this is just the top shelf of the fireplace, or the whole of the fireplace? And is it pre-colored, painted, stained, or left concrete gray?” Listen as we go into detail about the various aspects of a fireplace and getting the best design, making the right choices along your design journey.

“If you do the custom fire box, you need yourself a nice big chimney to allow the fire power, oxygen, all of the ventilation. The bigger the fire box, the bigger the chimney, the more chimney pots. This is gonna give your house a really awesome, estate-like look, and it really does have to vent out the chimney.” 17:30

We wanted to do this episode this week after a listener of ours asked “I’m a design obsessed homeowner in Denver planning to finish my basement in the next couple of years. An episode on basements would be amazing! Space planning, choosing finishes, features to include, etc.” We live in the West where we do a lot of basements, so with all our experience and expertise, we have a lot to say about this subject. We have a list of 6 things we’ve done in basements that we found successful and beautiful, so join us today to find out what those are and what we have to say!

“Guest rooms for downstairs, so your guests can be on another level. I know my parents love having all of this extra space for us kids to come home, there’s furnaces and cooling for different levels and they really only have to turn on the heat or AC on those levels when we come home.” 38:05

So this year we're doing something a little different. We’re taking our holiday episode and our listener questions episode and merging them together into one. We pulled everyone on our instagram feeds and this is what we got back. We got a ton and some we won't be able to answer, but we’re going to be answering a lot of them. You can also find a lot of answers to some of these questions last year/in our previous episodes.

“I also love the amber oil. They sell it at Ulta when you’re leaving the checkout, they also have it on Amazon. It’s the one perfume that I’ll wear. It’s 20 dollars, it rolls on, and it’s the one I get complimented on the most.” 34:00

In this episode we talk about the trend of the year, which we saw coming down Runway for sure in 2024 and some in 2023, and it’s called the Color Drench. This episode will unpack what this is and where to do it, how to do it, how we’re doing it, and we’re gonna share 5 projects that have been shot. We’ve been practicing this for probably the last 9 years and we didn’t know what it was called back then, but now we do and it’s awesome.

“As color drenching goes well beyond the simple accent wall like a monochromatic fantasy, the trend is all about a full-on single hue explosion across all surface levels in a room. In addition to the walls and ceilings, many objects and insulations such as window treatments and light fixtures get the same color treatment. However, a single color treatment doesn’t mean monotony. When color drenching a room, many designers opt to play around with the paints’ finish, mixing them both gloss and matte across a variety of textures such as wood or plaster to create greater interest.” 13:10

This is episode 3 in a 3 part series of us talking about wallpapers. This week we talk about the textured wallpapers and the grasscloths. There is a special place for grasscloths and however you want to think about it in your mind and apply it to your home, or multiple homes if you have them, we’re going to talk about that today.

“This is Rachel Parcel’s closet and the backs of her closet wall, every bay, is hit with this Osborn and Little Paper, and it’s silvered and has a wave to it. It is really dimensional and I don’t know how else to describe it, it’s almost leaf-like, but it looks like it bends in the back of her closet.” 10:35

This is episode 2 in a 3 part series of us talking about wallpapers. Today we talk about patterns and what the most common things we see are, like the paisley pattern you saw everywhere back in the 90s, and then we also discuss murals and go over visuals, which you can totally go see yourself if you watch us on our YouTube channel.

“You can’t just measure the square footage and think like, OK that equals the amount of square footage that’s in this roll, especially with the pattern because there is a calculation of how much waste you need, dependent on the pattern. He can even give me a fast number because it depends on the pattern and the space and each time it’s different. Just know that you’re gonna have a lot of waste, but if you want it installed correctly, it’s part of the game to make sure it matches correctly.” 36:05

We have a really fantastic set of episodes for you guys. This is episode 1 of a series of wallpaper episodes after we were working in the craftings segment of the podcast and realized there are so many ideas, thoughts, and things to unpack about wallpapers, so we’re breaking this up into 3 episodes: Murals, Patterns, and Textures. Those of you who have been wanting to get into the wallpaper scene are going to love this episode because we’re going to be sharing our favorite resources, including thoughts from our favorite wallpaper installer. We’re going to be sharing projects and showing the different types of papers to help you illustrate this, which you’ll be able to see over on our YouTube channel.

“We would put our paint deck down on that sample from Gracie to choose the exact shade of blue to paint the moldings if you wanted that color to continue, if you were doing moldings with it. In the case of Rachel’s she has white moldings, but she also has white floral trees in this scene, so that looks really great. And then in Isla Rose’s bedroom, she has a white field, so we did white crown and base in this room.” 18:15

In this episode we talk about one of the coolest projects we’ve ever done. We get a lot of inquiries from our listeners asking why we don’t talk about our own projects more, so today we decided to dive right in and give you a peek into what we have been working on at Alice Lane. This Capitol Heights project we’re doing is just happening to hit newsstands here in Utah and is getting published in Utah Style and Design, and it’s a project we are so excited about and proud of.

“She just wanted a space where she could just sit, and there was no TV in there, but she could write letters, have a conversation, so we did this beautiful pullup table up to the sofa, and then there’s a lot of seating. You have a sofa, 2 beautiful chairs. It feels very much like a his and hers moment on the chairs, and then we have this beautiful mohair daybed kinda splitting the area with an antique rug.” 30:27

Today is gonna be the funniest podcast because we got a funny question from one of their listeners who wrote in and asked “Throughout your many years of working on residential projects, how do you see family portraits fitting into your interior design?” We have since discovered that we have some pretty strong opinions on this. We all grew up in a time when mothers only decorated in family photos and didn’t bother so much with other decorations. So in light of that, we will be sharing with you our strong opinions we have on this specific topic today.

“I also really think that things are pretty if they’re in a slim wood frame, or in a beautiful silver frame, or like a ‘gilver.’ Golds are fickle, they kind of come and go, but that’s what I love about the crystal. It’s just so everlasting and it does disappear and will get along with the other ones if you’re really gonna layer it up.” 29:20

We feel like most people love Fall time the most out of the 4 seasons because it’s just the perfect place for temperature, for gathering, it gets a little darker, the nights are more crisp, you can sleep with your window cracked, and it’s just a very romantic time. The smells, the sounds, the sights, everything just feels richer, and even the fashion with all the layers you can pull on, people can really dress in the Fall. In this episode we talk about our favorite Fall updates. We each have our things we do for our homes and also for ourselves to signal the change of the seasons, so we hope you can tune in and gain some great insights into what you could do for your own home.
