  • On this episode I speak with Production Designer Helen Jarvis about the amazing limited series Shögun. The series is a massive undertaking with intense research, diving into historical texts, paintings, and archival material. She discusses that the goal is to not just recreate 17th-century Japan in the “Shoin-Zukuri” style but also make it visually compelling for a modern audience. Filmed on location in Vancouver, Shögun enlisted expert consultants from Japan to work with the Canadian crew in what became a seamless collaboration between Eastern and Western talents in service of telling a truly authentic Japanese story.
Committed to being authentic to the era, the sets, locations, décor, props and construction builds for Shögun were designed to make the viewer - and cast - believe they stepped into 1600 feudal Japan.
Helen describes how the sets were spread across two expansive exterior backlots, a remote mountainside location and two massive sound stages, which housed all the interiors of Osaka Castle, gardens, a Catholic mission and parts of the imposing ship the Erasmus. This series is a gorgeous design accomplishment and all episodes are now streaming on Hulu.

  • On this episode, I speak with Production Designer Mark Ricker and Set Decorator Cherish Hale.
FX's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is an eight episode limited series based on the best-selling book “Capote‘s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era" by Lawrence Leamer. (A book I devoured over last summer). The sets that Mark and Cherish create are lush, glamorous and enchanting. They previously collaborated on “Escape from Dennemora” and the Netflix series “Halston” and again their latest work is simply stunning. I’m a huge fan of Mark's work. I must have watched “Julie & Julia” a million times! Cherish has been a Set Decorator for more than 25 years and has Emmy, ADG and SDSA nominations and we both went to the same college! Small world!

  • Welcome to Season 7 of Decorating Pages Podcast! Can't believe it's been two months since the last podcast. The episode is recaps the Design award season of the Emmys, ADG and SDSA awards. I talk about the coming season of the podcast and working since the WGA/SAG strike ended. Excited to have upcoming interviews to share and also continuing with the Design Film Study this year. This episode features Production Designer James Philpott, who is behind Hulu's newest murder mystery series, “Death And Other Details”, starring Mandy Patinkin. The show's main set is an enormous cruise ship in the Art Deco style. We talk about giving the cabins different looks with the different personalities of the characters, transforming the spaces to save stage space, shooting the actual basements of the stages as the bows of the ship, and using color as clues in the story.

  • In this episode I speak with Set Decorator, Larry Dias and Production Designer, Paul Austerberry. They talk about the intricate process of creating the musical film version of the beloved book “The Color Purple”. From selecting locations in Georgia and building sets in a swamp and a waterfall to antiquing and creating his own prop house of period dressing. We also discuss not just the color purple but the significance of color and palette, specifically the use of the color red as a symbol of Shug's passion and its impact on Sealy's perspective. This film dives deeper into some of the other minor characters which gives the opportunity to see one of my favorite sets of the film, Shug’s house. Loved hearing their creative process and how that brought the film to the screen.
