Wait a minute…the Diet Detox gals are promoting a diet?? When the “diet” in question is all about hitting your minimum nutritional requirements during pregnancy, the answer is YES! We both used the Brewer diet during our second pregnancies and were able to avoid so many of the complications that plagued our first pregnancies. By encouraging pregnant women to eat plenty of protein, calories and salt, the Brewer diet supports the mother’s blood volume expansion of 40%-60 that needs to happen during every pregnancy. Join us today as we talk about the physiology of blood expansion, the importance of protein in pregnancy, the crucial role of salt in a pregnant woman’s diet, unrestricted weight gain and much more!

If you’ve ever been on a diet and hit a weight loss “plateau”, eventually regained all the weight you lost or feel like your body fought your dieting efforts, the set point theory will help you understand why! It turns out that our bodies know exactly what they’re doing when they resist weight loss – the set point theory hypothesizes that every human has a weight range that their body functions best at. Trying to push your body below its lowest set point range is met with great resistance. Join us today as we discuss the evidence for the set point theory and its implications for intuitive eating, dieting and pursuing health no matter your current size!

We talk a LOT about intuitive eating on this podcast, but it can actually be a little hard to explain and learn how to do if you're not used to it! Although intuition is extremely personal and you are ultimately the only one who knows what your body needs, it can be helpful to hear others' explanations of what eating intuitively looks like. Join us as we discuss the 10 Intuitive Eating principles from Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, authors of Intuitive Eating. We hope you find these guidelines helpful in your journey to learning how to listen to your body!

We are thrilled to have our first-ever guest interview this week on the podcast! Joining us is Dr. Andrea Moore, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist, a Nutritional Therapist, and a Life Coach.
Andrea's entire career path used to be based on trying to fix everything she felt was wrong with her- from chronic pain, bloating, gas, post-concussive syndrome, brain fog, anxiety, depression, PMS, and ADD.....all by the age of 26! However, she refused to accept these as her norm. But, trying to get better and healthy felt exhausting, restricting, and impossible.
While it took her years of exhausting work, she learned crucial lessons and skills that now allow her to help remove the mental load and burden off others on their journey to living a life that is not restricted by pain.
She has devoted her life to helping others heal from chronic pain and understand the function of pain in our lives. Is pain useful? How does the body recognize and process pain? What is the deal with chronic pain? How could understanding pain help you work through fear around food? We discuss all of these topics and more. Whether you suffer from chronic or intermittent pain, this episode is full of encouraging and insightful information! -
If BMI isn't an accurate way to determine health (and it's not) and weight isn't an accurate way to determine health (and it's not) then what measurements should we be using to find out if we're healthy or not? Join us today as we discuss everything from "feeling healthy", to subjective observations (like sleep, fertility and mood), to objective blood work tests that you can use to evaluate your health. We also are reminded of the fact that we're all going to die someday regardless of how healthy we are, so we shouldn't be overly stressed about healthiness anyway!

So we know all the science behind the utter failure of dieting. We understand that neither food nor body size have any inherent morality. We believe the truth that cutting calories and over-exercising causes more harm to the body and mind than it is worth… BUT what do you do when you still have the desire to lose weight?
On today’s episode we discuss the awkward truth that even anti-diet, intuitive eaters still sometimes feel the desire to do something to lose weight. What do you do when those thoughts come up? What if you have a medical issue that is causing the weight gain? How do you know if you should intervene or continue to trust your body? The issue of body size is not always as black and white as we wish it would be. While we certainly do not have all the answers, in this episode we discuss what helps us when “I want to lose weight” thoughts come up in our own minds and how we work to maintain a peaceful relationship with our bodies and food! -
How do you handle reintroducing foods that you're scared to eat?
Whether it's the fear of sugar causing weight gain or gluten causing gastric distress or whatever other foods are currently considered "bad", stressing about food almost always causes problems! Join us today as we share our experiences with our own fear foods over the years, how we (successfully!) reintroduced foods that used to make us sick or scared (or both) and as we dive into the reasons why stressing over food is bad for digestion, absorption and long-term health. When we stop fearing and obsessing over certain foods, we take back our power and peace of mind around food in general! -

Any parent of a toddler can tell you that one of the most difficult aspects of raising a little one is FOOD! Whether they're refusing to eat for what seems like days, or insisting on only boxed macaroni and cheese for every meal, or eating you out of house and home, it can feel pretty overwhelming to navigate food with a toddler! On today's episode we have some tips and tricks for raising a child to eat intuitively. Although we are far from perfect mothers, we have learned a lot during the past few years as we've raised our own children to eat to appetite and would like to pass on what has worked for us. Hopefully you will be equipped and inspired to give your child a great start in food freedom that will serve them the rest of their life!

Low energy, thyroid issues, insomnia, irregular periods....many people suffer from a combination of these issues and go from doctor to doctor to find help, yet cannot figure out the root cause. We're here to say that it could be as simple as the fact that you might not be eating enough! If your body doesn't have the raw energy to run properly, it cannot sustain all systems optimally and has to "cut back" in various ways - causing things like sleep issues, hormone irregularities and digestive issues to name a few. In this episode we discuss signs that you might not be eating enough, and (if you resonate with any of these issues) encourage you to try thoroughly fueling your body! The potential benefits in your life and overall health could be significant!

We talk a lot about eating and food freedom on this podcast, but what about exercise? Usually exercise and food go hand in hand in the health world, and unfortunately also in diet culture. Most people with restrictive eating habits also engage in compulsive exercise - using workouts to punish or control their bodies. But it doesn't have to be this way! Believe it or not there is such a thing as intuitive exercise as well as intuitive eating, and today we chat about what healthy exercise looks like. For both of us, the exercise program T-Tapp has been a lifesaver and has fit in seamlessly with our intuitive and gentle approach to health. This episode is not sponsored by T-Tapp - we are both just such big fans that we can't say enough good things about it!

Despite loads of "Biblical diets", Christian detoxes, pressures from the pulpit to be "disciplined" with food, and snooty comments in the church buffet line about the contents of your plate, the New Testament does not actually promote rigidly controlled eating habits or thinness as the ideal body type. In fact, Paul has some strong words for food morality - "doctrines of demons" anyone? There are a few popular verses and Biblical concepts that Christians pull out of context to support restrictive eating and keep diet culture strong in the church. In this episode, we go through each one and see what God has to say to us about food, body size and appearance!
