On this week’s episode we chat about reaching 10,000 downloads (thanks for listening) and a weekend of gigging. George had a double dip weekend playing a theatre in Bracknell with 80s Hi-Fi and a wedding the following day and Ben tested his new hybrid set up at a wedding in Bristol but how did it go? Hit play to find out. Enjoy!

Thanks for joining us! There’s lots of great stuff on this week's show including the busiest gig day in May, WhatsApp playing with fire and Ben finally gets his ears moulded. We also talk about how busy Zildjian have been so far this year with not only the return of the Z Customs but this week they seemed to hint that they’re entering the world of the e-kit (and not for the first time it would seem). George talks about drum focused songs and Ben had his heart broken by those he trusts the most. Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Drum and Drummer! This week we’re chatting about George’s recent gig with Lennon Taylor where he used his new Gretsch Catalina with a slightly unusual cymbal set up. Ben also talks in detail about his new kit; the Roland VAD504! Having played it at two wedding gigs already, is this the future of live drumming? He’s also paired it with a full set of Yamaha Crosstown hardware to make transport easier (and save his ailing back). There’s also some tennis beef brewing as George preps for his grudge match with a previous guest. Enjoy!

As long time customers of Graham Russell Drums we were delighted to sit down and chat with Graham about how he turned buying a few second hand kits into the UK’s largest drum store and what makes them so good at what they do. We also talk about customer satisfaction, keeping stock levels high and trends in the drum industry. Enjoy!

It’s just the two of us this week and time for a good catch up. We have some correspondence to get through and George has been practising using the disappearing click method (although we can’t agree on what it actually is). We also chat about limb dynamics, working with a previous guest in the studio and Ben’s been up to London filming some new function band promo. Enjoy!

This week we are joined by the legendary Mat Hector. As well as a stellar career drumming for the likes of Iggy Pop, Marc Almond and Razorlight he now spends some of his time producing artists and session recording from his studio built during Covid. We talk about the meticulous approach to accurately playing Lust For Life, matching Iggy’s energy on stage, the art of groove and the ‘disappearing click’ practice technique. We also find out what it's like to record a drum sample pack after Mat played every sample for the ‘Fields Of Rock’ expansion pack for Superior Drummer. Enjoy!

This week we are joined by the amazing Georgia Challinor. We caught up with Georgia not long after she returned home from touring with Enter Shikari as the band’s drum tech. We find about life on the road and expanding her career from playing to also being a tech and playback engineer. We also chat about the similar experiences we all shared being a drummer at school, pay systems for touring and owning a snare drum used by Paramore. Enjoy!

Protesting at his new found fame, Hercules delayed the start of this week’s episode by doing a poo on the carpet and George’s recycling has finally been collected. It’s all going on! Once we’d calmed down George tells us more about his recent gig in London with Mackenzie including learning songs at short notice and dealing with playback. Meanwhile Ben had his hearing test at Boots. Listen to find out the results. Enjoy!

This week we are joined by the awesome Ollie Woods. Ollie is quickly gaining notoriety on Instagram due to his transcriptions of famous drum solos. Not only does he meticulously transcribe note for note he also takes on the challenge of learning how to play the solo as well! We talk about how it started, the process of transcribing and the issues that can arise with all the different kit variations. Ollie has also studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, been a finalist in the Young Drummer of the Year and is currently completing a PhD in metric modulation. There’s also a nice surprise when we ask about his favourite delivery company. Enjoy!

After our best intro ever, we were joined by Dave Eyre to chat all about drumming case stalwarts Hardcase! Started in 1992 by Amber Plastics in Chesterfield with a desire to expand their use of rotational moulding technology market research pointed towards the music industry and in particular drums. Now a separate company and run by Dave they continue to be a global brand in the drum case business. We talk about the history of the product, new features driven by both users and drum/cymbal makers and the production process from start to finish. We also quiz Dave on any unsuccessful innovations, how they test the cases and why full lining is only available on certain models. Enjoy!

This week’s episode was recorded face to face as George has been recording a new drum video at Ben’s studio. We talk about the day in the studio and the drum gear we used (including ANOTHER new snare drum). George has also got new skins for his Gretsch Catalina and been to see friends play with Deaf Havana and You Me At Six. We also talk about Snareweights and a run in with the Irish police! Enjoy!

This week we are talking about ear safety and who better to talk to than Jono Heale from ACS; one of the leading brands in hearing protection and in-ear monitors. Having been a professional bass player for 15 years Jono unfortunately developed tinnitus which completely changed his life. We talk about the impact that had on him and his career, the positive changes in attitude towards hearing protection, how loud drums are, listening exposure time and what you can do to protect yourself and how ACS can help. This is a great listen for all musicians and consumers of music. Enjoy!

This week we are joined by the magnificent ‘Deano Machine’ aka Dean Llewellyn. Dean is an exceptional guitarist and plays in the band Barbara with previous guest Lawrie Miller. He is also friends with and gigs regularly with George so we thought we’d get a guitarist's point of view about drums and drummers. He regaled us with tales about gigs in hair salons, the weird world of joinmyband.com, ‘the lick’ and much more. With an upcoming tour supporting Paul Weller we talk about pressure, drum volume on stage and he flips the script and asks us what we want from guitarists. Enjoy!

It’s a bumper episode this week with plenty of drum chat. We both went to a 30th birthday party / jam night and George played at Icebreaker festival where hair extensions and guitar heads don’t mix. Our wallets have suffered as we’ve both been shopping for new drum gear with Ben getting a new stool, kick pedal, hi hat stand and crash and George picking up a second hand Gretsch Catalina kit. We also chat about Evans and Remo skins and the equivalent models they offer while George has been learning to make pizzas. Enjoy!

This week we are joined by Jack Hicklin! After studying at BIMM, Jack put drums on the back burner as he spent the following few years coaching tennis. Now with a renewed passion for drumming he’s prioritising his music career with regular gigs in both the covers and original circuits. We find out if there’s any similarities between high level tennis and high level drumming, the challenges of re-entering the drumming scene, not hearing back after auditions and most importantly how fast his tennis serve is. Enjoy!

To clean or not to clean, that is the question. On this week’s episode we are talking about cymbal cleaning and why you should or maybe more importantly why you shouldn’t be doing it. Also Ben’s new hi hats get put under the microphone in the studio and we learn about the magic (or science) behind Bar Keepers Friend. Enjoy!

Hello! This week Ben finally buckled under the weight of public opinion and started watching The Traitors but has ruined his sleep schedule in the process. George has been on his croissant making course and played an 80th birthday party under difficult sound restrictions including a rhythmically challenged clapper. We also take a look at practice routines, the books George has been using to keep those drumsticks under control and breaking through plateaus. Enjoy!

It’s been cold so Ben’s got his big coat on. George regales us of his triumphant pub quiz antics and we take a look at the Zildjian 400th anniversary snare drum which comes with a hefty price tag. We’ve had some more kit pics in and one of us is off on a croissant making course. Enjoy!

Happy New Year! On this first episode of 2024 we caught up on what we did over Xmas including Ben’s trip to New York and George’s busy working week. We also chat about our goals for 2024 in more detail, read out a lovely listener message, grabbing some new hi-hats from the Big Apple, and a night out including getting smashed, watching The Darkness and going to a casino with Hugh Grant (well, someone who looked like him). Enjoy!
