  • Since 1979, C-SPAN has been providing unfiltered access into the inner workings of American democracy. Until recently though, the network was funded entirely by the cable industry and had never attempted to fundraise from private donors.

However, the disruption produced by cord cutting necessitated innovation and late last year C-SPAN launched a development program to generate support from the channel's loyal audience which values their unfiltered, unbiased approach politics.

C-SPAN's first ever Development Director, Molly Connors, joins Dan to share her story and go behind the scenes to discuss what it's been like to launch a fundraising program for legacy brand.

Topics covered in this fascinating chat include:

    - Molly's origin story in fundraising, how her new position at C-SPAN brought her career full circle, and how helping to launch a digital program for PBS prepared her for the position

    - C-SPAN's three critical donor cohorts and how Molly and her team identified them

    - What is the value proposition that drives those cohorts to give and the importance of unique value propositions for different groups of donors

    - TONS OF TACTICAL INSIGHTS, including C-SPAN's channel and engagement strategy and clever hacks for increasing DAF and digital giving (Hint: You'll want to add your postal address to all of your donation pages after listening to this interview)

    - The value of donor stories and helpful tips on how to solicit them

    - C-SPAN's surprising success on TikTok and reaching younger donors

    Plus, so much more...

This interview is a great listen for fundraisers and non-profit leaders who enjoy founding stories as well any fundraising professional who is interested in tactical hacks for audience development, donor engagement, content strategy, and so much more.

Fundraisers who have been able to successfully start a program from the ground up have a rare and invaluable perspective which is why we are so grateful to Molly for sharing her time and wisdom.

We really enjoyed this conversation and, got a ton of value out of it, and believe you will too.

Thanks as always for listening to the Dynamic Non-Profits Podcast and enjoy the show!

  • Fundraising thought leader Dave Raley drops by the show for a casual chat about innovation...more specifically what's holding innovation back in the nonprofit sector.

Much deeper than a philosophical discussion, Dave and Dan dig into innovation tactics and shifts which can benefit nonprofits of all sizes (some of which require little to no overhead to implement).

Dave also touches on the role of leadership and why understanding your "working genius" type holds the key to driving a culture of innovation.

Dan also asks Dave how his background in direct mail influences his approach to innovation and they have a brief side car discussion about strategies and techniques which overlap between direct mail, email, and other channels.

This is a fun and valuable listen for fundraisers and nonprofit leaders who are passionate about driving innovation or who are interested in taking stock about the state of innovation inside their own organization.

  • We cover a lot of ground on the Dynamic Nonprofits Podcast, but some of our favorite discussions are when we deep dive into tactics and practical tips that can help transform your fundraising program.

If you're an email fundraiser, or just a fundraiser who shares our passion for A/B testing, you'll love Dan's conversation with email GURU Jay Schwedelson.

Jay's combination of passion, candor, and practicality make for an entertaining discussion that will provide you with pages full of tips that can transform your organization's approach to email (some of which are surprisingly simple and counterintuitive).

    Topics Discussed Include:

    - Why open rates still matter and how to improve them with emojis

    - Breaking News: Why opt-outs are actually a GOOD thing

    - Optimal send times (Spoiler: They're not on the hour)

    - Why your call to action is leaving donations on the table

    - Shockingly simple advice for how to make sure your email newsletter is opened and read

Plus, so much more including how Jay's direct mail background informs his perspective on email and why Linked In Newsletters are the next great frontier for donor engagement.

It's a conversation that is as entertaining as it is informative (Dan and Jay even talk a little bit about reality TV towards the end). If you do walk away with some helpful advice, we hope you'll pay it forward by rating and reviewing the Dynamic Nonprofits Podcast on your platform of choice (but especially Apple Podcasts). • There are a lot of books about fundraising, but one in particular has driven conversation within the nonprofit sector this year - The Generosity Crisis.

Co-Author Nathan Chappell joins Dan to look back on a year of The Generosity Crisis and what he's learned from '10,000 conversations' since the book's release.

They discuss what's driving the crisis and focus on solutions for solving it, some of which are surprisingly human and practical. Nathan also talks about radical connection techniques that nonprofits can borrow from commercial brands (who borrowed them from us first) and shares his inspiring fundraising industry origin story.

Dan's conversation with Nathan is the perfect compliment for those who have read the book and for those who want to quickly catch up on year's worth of conversations about it.

The Dynamic Nonprofits Podcast is the industry's first and only podcast dedicated to breaking down silos within the nonprofit sector. If you get value from today's interview, please rate and review Dynamic Nonprofits and subscribe to the pod so you can hear fresh releases first.

  • There's a trust crisis in America. According to Gallup, trust is down in institutions ranging from government, to the media, schools, and just about everything in between.

Unfortunately, non-profit organizations aren't immune from this decline in trust. In fact, the Edelman Trust Barometer shows that non-profits are now trusted less than businesses for the first time in 40 years.

The trust crisis has real world implications for non-profits and the beneficiaries they serve as demonstrated by RKD Group's new study "Non-Profit Marketer's Guide to Trust". Their findings show a direct relationship between a donor's level of trust and their willingness to give AND maximize contributions over their lifetime.

Amanda Wasson, RKD Group's Executive Vice President of Client Services, joins the show to deconstruct this pressing research. We deep dive into RKD's findings and, as importantly, walk through actionable steps non-profits can take to build and enhance trust with their donors.

The non-profit sector can't wish the trust gap away, but we do have the tools the close it. Take your first step towards closing the trust gap with donors by listening to this interview with Amanda Wasson.

  • Why do Americans give?
It's the question which drives our fundraising strategies and holds the keys to improving our relationships with donors.
Classy's Michelle Boggs joins the show to answer that foundational question and much more as Michelle and Dan deep dive into Classy's annual "Why America Gives" report. Topics discussed include:
    - The history of "Why America Gives" and what makes it unique among a sea of industry reports and data
    - The different ways Americans are looking to give back to nonprofits (hint: It's about more than donating money)
    - Passive donors versus loyal donors. What's the difference and why each are critical to maximizing your program's impact
    - Donors' resilience in the face of economic headwinds and how donors budget giving into their annual spending plans
    - Reasons why some donors increased giving in 2022
    - How to build loyalty through multi-channel engagement
    - Generational differences in giving and the important role younger donors (and even non-donors) play in building a successful program

  • How much is the right amount to ask donors for?

Michael Gorriarán, President @ Arjuna Solutions, joins the show to answer this fundamental question. Dan and Michael discuss how Arjuna applies behavioral economics to determine the optimal ask amount for creating long-term relationships with donors which maximizes their lifetime value potential.

    Topics Discussed Also Include:

    - How behavioral economics also help non-profits determine when and often to mail individual donors (important in an era of inflation and declining response rates)

    - Why behavioral economic modeling takes a clearer picture of donors than transactional data or wealth screening alone

    - The importance of optimizing ask amounts across channels (Did you know that asking donors for different amounts on and offline can hurt LTV?)

    - How to break down barriers and silos which prevent cross-channel collaboration from happening (a favorite topic of discussion on Dynamic Non-Profits!)

    - Budgeting solutions that can make non-profits more nimble

    - Plus, so much more!

Michael also shares his family history in philanthropy and the lessons he learned working at Microsoft that can increase the impact of the non-profit sector.

  • Fundraising through gaming and livestreaming has become a multi-billion dollar revenue channel by marrying tried and true peer to peer fundraising psychology with modern technology, but it remains a mystery to many experienced fundraisers and a medium which is labeled with misconceptions by those who don't game themselves.

Think your donors don't game? Think again, studies show that there are over 200 million gamers in the U.S. alone many of whom are in their prime earning and giving years (those millennials who grew up playing Tetris on NES now own homes and have families of their own - And many still game in their free time).

Gaming and Livestream fundraisers present non-profits with a unique opportunity to engage valuable donors who may not be reachable through traditional direct response channels, but knowing where to begin can seem daunting.

That's why I was thrilled to invite April Stallings onto the show. April is Gaming and Influencer Community Manager for Make-A-Wish International. A lifelong gamer herself, April helps to cultivate a community of gamers, content creators, and influencers who are eager to raise funds from their followers and get more wishes granted for children.

In this eye-opening discussion, April covers:

    - Who games and why it's a valuable channel for non-profits of all types to explore (April helps bust some serious gaming myths)

    - How to recruit content creators and influencers who are willing and able to raise money for your cause

    - The importance of cultivating relationships with those creators and not looking for one-offs

    - Her methods for vetting potential creators and why influencers with smaller followings can be the most effective fundraisers

    - Some tips for non-profits with files built from traditional direct response channels to find and engage gamers who are already donors

    - Why gaming is just part of streaming and the growth of chat streams

    Plus, much more...

Our conversation with April will be a fun listen for gamers and a valuable one for fundraisers who want to know first steps for starting a program of their own. However, it will be equally valuable for traditional direct response fundraisers who are seeking to broaden their knowledge about one of the fastest growing channels in the industry.

If you do get value out of our interview with April, please pay it forward by rating and reviewing the Dynamic Non-Profits Podcast and subscribing to the show. • When it comes to caging donor data, time and accuracy are money and delays and poor data hygiene can cost non-profits a lot in revenue and delayed decision making.

The importance of lockbox and caging services have come to the forefront for many organizations since the start of the pandemic, but the mechanics of these vital services remain a blind spot for many seasoned fundraisers.

Since 2005, Engage USA has been striving to provide clients with "obsessively accurate data" through the use of innovative technology, transparency, personalization, and a never ending mission to change expectations about data quality in the non-profit space.

Their founder, Dennis Hoffman, joins the show to give DNP listeners an education in Caging-101 and talk about the role cagers can play in breaking down data and strategy silos.

    Topics Discussed Include:

    - How Dennis' experience as a direct mail fundraiser inspired his pursuit to perfect non-profit data hygiene

    - A 101 overview of how caging and lockbox services work (including, "Why do they call it caging anyway?")

    - The role technology has played in creating faster, more accurate caging

    - Data which cagers can help capture (in addition to donation) that can help streamline and integrate fundraising (For example: Did you know cagers can help retain and catalog survey responses and comment mail?)

    - How cagers can help nonprofits take advantage of emerging payment methods such as e-wallets

    - The answer to the TRIVIA QUESTION: What percentage of donations are still made via check? (Listen through the entire interview for an answer which may surprise you)

    - Plus, much more

If fundraising is a V8 engine, caging is the oil which keeps it going. Enjoy my conversation with Dennis Hoffman as we shine a light on a part of the industry which is sometime unsung but is always absolutely vital to the success and optimization of nonprofit fundraising.
