In PA school we learned the first treatment to almost every disease is lifestyle modifications. But why do we wait until a patient receives a diagnosis instead of being proactive about starting lifestyle modifications earlier? How do we actually help patients follow through with making effective lifestyle modifications? What do we do if we know we need to make changes in our own lifestyles?
My guest today is here to answer these questions and more! Dr. Jennifer Harrington is a PA with 25 years of experience and has held pivotal roles in professional leadership, advocacy, and PA education. She worked in rural medicine for many years and is now a PA program director, following her passion for education. She also runs her own non-profit, Called to Serve, organizing medical missions trips.
Dr. Harrington shares how she was able to prevent burnout by creating routines and habits that focus on nutrition and quality self care. In order to effectively carry out her several roles and responsibilities, Dr. Harrington discusses how she learned the importance of taking care of herself so that she can better take care of others.
Do you want to learn the keys of how to become a happier and healthier PA? Tune into today’s episode to learn what you can start implementing today!

75% of American adults are overweight or obese. With that statistic, we will definitely treat overweight or obese patients, regardless of our specialties. But how do we discuss weight with our patients? Many PAs feels nervous about discussing a patient’s weight and don’t know how to approach what can be a very sensitive and emotionally-charged topic.
That’s why I have Elena Sullivan on the podcast today to lead a masterclass in talking about obesity with compassion. Elena has been working as a PA in obesity and lifestyle medicine for 4 years. She shares how to focus on longitudinal whole person care with our patients. Elena defines weight bias and stigma, and how we can identify our own biases in order to best care for our patients.
I learned so much from my conversation with Elena on the best ways to discuss obesity, weight loss and health with my patients, and also how to apply these tools to my own life. But my biggest takeaway from Elena’s masterclass on obesity? Elena believes that the biggest weight one can lose is that of others’ opinions and criticism of our own selves.

When was the last time you slowed down enough to evaluate how things are going in your life? Are you actually enjoying the journey? Are you headed towards a destination filled with what you value? Do you remember why you became a PA in the first place?
Tune in to today’s episode for a refreshing conversation with my friend, Adrian Banning. Adrian is a PA and Associate Professor at Delaware Valley University.
Adrian and I discuss how to overcome hustle culture so that work is not the center of your life, but what you do to help create the life you want.
Adrian also discusses the importance of lifestyle medicine and how we can encourage patients (and ourselves) to change their habits in order to create healthier lives. Adrian also teaches us how to use information mastery to effectively analyze and utilize evidence-based medicine.
At the end of the day, we’re all humans taking care of other humans. Let’s try and find the best way to care for others that also shows compassion to ourselves. We can be proud to be PAs and be excellent at what we do, but we don’t need to let our careers define who we are.

Are you a PA feeling trapped in the traditional healthcare model, longing for more control over your time and career? You're not alone. In today’s episode, I sit down with Michael Rubio, a dermatology PA turned healthtech innovator, who shares his journey from burnout to breakthrough.
In our interview, Michael reveals how he leveraged technology to create a new healthcare delivery model that benefits both PAs and patients. He discusses:
The three main issues he identified in traditional practice
How he developed a platform that allows PAs to practice with more flexibility, often from home.
The surprising demand for direct-to-patient care models, even in systems with "free" healthcare.
Michael's insights open up a world of possibilities for PAs seeking more autonomy and financial growth. He shares how his model allows for:
Flexible work hours and locations
Increased earning potential through direct patient care
Opportunities for practice ownership and entrepreneurship
A more satisfying way to deliver patient care
But this isn't just about improving life for PAs. Michael explains how this model also enhances the patient experience by providing more convenient, accessible, and timely care. It's a win-win situation that could reshape the future of healthcare delivery.
If you're a PA who's ever dreamed of having more control over your schedule, the ability to work from anywhere, or the opportunity to build your own practice, this episode is a must-listen. Michael's journey proves that it's possible to create a fulfilling career that aligns with your personal goals and values. This episode could be the inspiration you need to take the first step towards your own professional transformation.
Don't miss out on this eye-opening conversation. Listen now and discover how you can create more freedom and ownership in your PA career. The future of healthcare is changing, and PAs have the opportunity to lead the way.
