We've got another stand-alone analysis for you today, Honeys.
Our work in question for the day is Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas of 1556. To get ourselves into the royal mindset, we're taking it back to 17th-century Spain and diving into the relationships between Diego Velazquez and the Spanish royal family. The painting itself will give us clues into the artist's role in their lives and his status at court in general, so expect to hear a bit about each character seen here. We will also going to look at court painters and the tradition of court painting a little more broadly.

We understand how this could sounds pretty dry, BUT the terms we have chosen for your today are just funky and therefore memorable, or effectively tricky enough in practice, to be worth talking about.

What better topic for a Spooky Special than a Surrealist, Honeys?
At least that's the thought behind our newest episode, investigating the life, career, and artworks of Remedios Varo. One of the most popularly-obscure yet incredibly impactful Spanish artists of the 20th century, Varo constantly challenged other Surrealists as well as herself to create emotionally compelling and symbolically-loaded artworks that resonate through to today.

You know I love a good alliteration, Honeys, and this episode's title not only scratches that itch but tells you everything.
In today's discussion of art history, we zoom in on the late 19th and early 20th centuries to talk about Primitivism and its baby brother, Cubism. We'll take a look at how "primitive" evolved as a term, shifting with its times to reference other cultures and places in the world instead of Europeans' own past cultures. We'll look at how it inspired several other movements and many of the trends of modernism, but most importantly, we'll reveal the artists behind some of Primitivism's most enduring and most recognizable tropes to take you on a comprehensive journey through the worlds of pure imagination created by Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, and more.
You'll also finally learn why I say "ew" every time I say Gauguin! Spoiler alert: he's problematic.

Though Van Gogh is one of the most famous male artists of all time, he never would have become a household name without the efforts of one very special woman: Johanna Bonger van Gogh, his sister-in-law. Inheriting Vincent's artworks and letters to her husband after both passed away, she decided she had inherited her husband's mission to make his brother famous as well. Jo ensured Vincent's legacy, and now we will do our part to ensure hers.
