  • It’s real. The comedown. That feeling you get, the low, the low-level depression, that feeling of loneliness or emptiness after a big moment- that key speech you gave, that show you played, that big, huge conversation you’ve been preparing for. Dia and Baby A discuss their own comedown experiences and Dia shares a 5-step framework for dealing with your own:

    Caring for your comedown:

    Take time, take care. Be tender with yourself. Don’t just power through. It’s a big letdown after using all the adrenaline you needed to do that big thing. Now rest and take care. Go for a walk? Take a nap? Debrief with a friend who can show you the tenderness you need. Reflect on what worked. And then? Lock that in. Once you’ve recovered a bit but are still feeling that soft glow of the moment (even if it’s bittersweet) take a look and reflect on what worked about what you did on stage, in that meeting, in that conversation. When you presented yourself, your art, your ideas in a way that landed some or all of it well, take a few minutes to notice what you did that worked, why you think it works and if you’d like to have that be something you do every time you get in front of an audience that matters. Forgive yourself for what didn’t work. Nothing is ever as perfect as you want it to be. So, take a moment to forgive what didn’t work. That moment you interrupted, that time you stumbled. That punchline you missed. Let it go. Let yourself off the hook. Find someone to debrief. Phone a friend, a colleague, a parent or your favorite aunt. Having a nice debrief with someone who is willing to talk about what you did in front of that room honestly but with care and compassion- ready to just listen if you need it or provide calibrated feedback is critical to getting your feet back on the ground on your way out of a comedown. See it in the continuum of all of the big moments. Notice that what you did in that performance, is ephemeral and lives in the context of your full leadership life, your full body of work, your full career or business. This may shrink that feeling of “win/lose”, that critical communications or presentation moments can have. When you put it on the continuum of your steps to a goal- it can fade into a larger fabric of your life, leadership and aspirations. In that context you can shrink the power of that ONE moment, let it fade into the scene of your life and it can loosen its grip a bit and ease you out of the comedown and back into everyday life.

  • Every 6 or 7 years, there’s a new adventure. Something to shake things up, take a new perspective, and something that drives a new creative expression and is an opportunity for a new exploration.

    13 years ago, it was developing the craft of coaching
even though I’d been coaching already for years.

    6 years ago, it was Auctioneering school- a fun adventure that didn’t mean much but ended up being the spark that led to the book. Ask Like an Auctioneer: How To Ask For More and Get It.

    Now? After feeling ill at ease with the framing I took to set impact goals for the business I run, I realized- my goals are all wrong, and it’s time to shift perspective, dig into a new craft and look at it all with a fresh take tied to the craft of the written word. I realize, it’s time to lead with who I am. And that is developing my writing voice.

    So, for the next period of time, we’ll have guests on the show here and there, but episode 58 marks the beginning of bringing my own journey of running my life, my impact, and my work on terms that truly reflect who I am.

    I’m starting by diving right into the fire by attending a week-long writing retreat with a small cohort of writers and a guide, right at the foot of Glacier National Park.

    My words will get ripped. My craft will show itself as non-existent. Even though I’ve already written a book- I am a published author- I can legitimately say I’m starting at the beginning. And it feels great to be a beginner.

  • Jim Cook is on the pod for this episode. I’ve heard him talk about his role as a CFO in a way that goes beyond the numbers- into the territory of culture in organization and teams.     Pitfall #1: Assuming that how you feel about something matters so much that you're obligated to communicate that every time.     Pitfall #2: Believing that your voice is the only voice that matters. Dia encourages leaders to curate and elevate the voices of others, allowing for a more distributed impact.     Pitfall #3: Thinking that what you say has to be catchy, funny, or entertaining. Dia emphasizes the need for clarity and confidence in your storytelling, vision, and strategies. She advises against prioritizing entertainment over providing answers, clarity, and reasons to believe, while still allowing for moments of fun and engagement.

    Summary of Common Pitfalls When Asking for More:

    Pitfall #1: Deciding in advance what others will say yes or no to: Avoid the trap of assuming you know the outcome of your ask. By embracing uncertainty and testing the boundaries, you open yourself up to the possibility of receiving more than you anticipated.

    Pitfall #2: Waiting for ordained negotiation moments to ask for anything at all: Don't limit your asks to specific negotiation situations. Recognize that you can ask for what you need at any time, even outside formal negotiations. Utilize the Ask Plan framework to identify strategic asks that align with your goals.

    Pitfall #3: Thinking that if you ask big and get a "no", the conversation is over: Instead of viewing a "no" as a definitive end, see it as an opportunity to start a new dialogue. A "no'' can lead to exploring alternative possibilities and deepening relationships. Embrace the power of persistence and adaptability in your ask.

  • So, we started this podcast as The Dia Bondi Show, a big podcast for women with goals.

    Why? Because I had launched Project: Ask Like an Auctioneer with the mission for 1 million women to ask for more and get it but
it wasn’t enough. We reimagined the show and re-titled it to be Lead With Who You Are.

    Why? Because my philosophy in my work and in my professional development in the domain of communication and leadership, is that you are your most powerful when you lead with who you are. It’s proven out over and over again in my 20 years of helping Senior leaders, VC backed founders and ambitious professionals speak powerfully when it matters most.

    And that includes all I teach in my upcoming book, Ask Like an Auctioneer: Asking Big Means Speaking Powerfully and in alignment with who you are and what you want, but what do I MEAN when I say ask like an auctioneer?

    Today, I’m sharing with you the audio recording of a short virtual talk I gave recently and by the end, you’ll know exactly what I mean and HOW to do it and apply it to the goals you may have today. You’re going to hear me speak directly to the chat window that was open during my talk, and you’re going to hear prompts that are meant for the audience in the session, but you can use them too.

  • In this episode, Dia talks about the importance of using your voice as a strike point for your leadership, especially during "whiplash moments."

    Dia begins by discussing the many "whiplash moments" that leaders, founders, and their teams have experienced in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns, layoffs, product pivots, and bank failures. These critical moments present opportunities for leaders to activate their people, teams, and cultures, or to deteriorate and disassemble them.

    Dia suggests that leaders approach these critical moments with communication, written or spoken, that rings true. She encourages leaders to move from "noise" to "impact" by starting with the Impact/Outcome framework, which establishes the intention for the communication moment. By asking what impact they are trying to have and what outcome they are trying to create, leaders can hold themselves and the communication accountable and ensure that they are moving towards the desired outcome.

    Dia also recommends anticipating questions and inventorying the 5 or 6 questions that the audience has about the topic being addressed. By recognizing the audience's questions and anxieties, leaders can inform the content they share, the degree of detail in their answers, and the communications plan after the initial letter or live communication gathering.

    Finally, Dia advises leaders to decide what to address and in what detail, as well as what questions to leave unanswered for now and what to do about them. This is where leaders can start to develop their position or point of view and communicate it effectively to their audience.

    Overall, this episode emphasizes the importance of using your voice as a strike point for your leadership and how to approach critical moments with communication that is impactful and true to who you are.
