Hey, how’s your July going? We’re on to episode 13, which was originally recorded last year before the holidays and has minimal edits! Apologies for the ongoing long spells of silence; that’s what happens when I get busy with teaching painting classes at local libraries in my area AND working full time. I always plan to not go so long between episodes again, but you know how life can be! Also I still need to figure out balancing in my edits, and once I figure out how to do that on Soundtrap, it’s on! So please know that I do appreciate any feedback you share with me!This podcast episode features guest speaker and library marketer Sara DeVries, Community Relations Manager at Herrick District Library in Holland, Michigan, my home state, and I am really grateful to her for taking time out of her busy schedule to talk:Thank you again to Sara for being a guest on LM4LM!Have feedback for me? In our seventh episode, I met with fellow Michigander and local TLN Library friend, Jeff Milo. My apologies for the lateness in which I am posting this; we recorded a few weeks ago and my library has been incredibly busy with preparing our next quarter's print newsletter, among other things. I've been exhausted!
Jeff Milo has been working in libraries for more than half his life. Jeff started creating content for the Ferndale Library's social media accounts within his first month on the job and more than a decade later, he's still finding inventive and engaging ways to inform & excite people about their library, its services, and its many resources. Like literally any library staffer, Jeff wears lots of hats--he helps coordinate programming for adults, heads the library's Art & Exhibitions Committee, and hosts/produces the library's podcast, "A Little Too Quiet." Jeff holds a degree in journalism from Michigan State University--a degree he utilizes in his position as Ferndale's Marketing Coordinator, but when he's off the clock, he's also a reporter-at-large for 101.9 WDET FM and an infrequent contributor to the Metro Times.
This interview is more conversational and less formal than my previous ones as Jeff and I know each other from co-op meetings, conferences, and trainings we've attended!

In this episode, I interview Chris Boivin, Assistant Director of Community Relations and Marketing for the Jacksonville Library system, which has 21 locations serving a large population in Florida. Chris has spent over 7 years in this position, co-managing an exceptionally talented team, and learning a lot along the way. He shares his insight gained from running marketing campaigns, and how it's really not about what "you're" trying to get your patrons, cardholders, users, or customers (however your library labels your guests) to do, it's more about how to figure out what they like, send them that, and that is what conveys the value of your library. Chris also talks about responsive design, emails, the importance of clear CTAs (call to action), and notes that Donald Miller's book "Building a Storybrand" has had a large influence on his work.
Chris also mentions Angela Hursh's fantastic blog, Super Library Marketing, which can be read at: superlibrarymarketing.com.
Chris hosts, plans, and runs a monthly book club specifically for library marketing that meets on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/librarymarketingbookclub/
His book club hosts the authors, does Q & A, and invites you to vote on the next book they will read. Chris' book club also has a website in which he posts past meeting recordings. Visit www.librarymarketingbookclub.org to browse and signup to receive emails.
