  • Rick Koenig embarked on a remarkable journey when he began martial arts training at 4. Growing up in New Jersey, Rick had a unique upbringing, as their father owned pizzerias, where they actively participated in running and working.

In later years, Rick transitioned into the security world, working at nightclubs in Philadelphia and New Jersey. During this time, Rick had the opportunity to cross paths with notable figures like Paul Wight II and provided security for legendary individuals such as Mike Tyson and Dennis Rodman.

However, life took a challenging turn as Rick found himself entangled in "mob connections," leading him down a troubling path that ultimately resulted in imprisonment alongside his father in the maximum-state security prisons of the Department of Corrections in New Jersey.

Upon Rick's release, he exhibited resilience and determination by purchasing and owning MMA facilities while pursuing a career as a professional fighter in the late 1980s. In 2009, Rick relocated to Branson, Missouri, and opened his MMA school.

In martial arts, Rick played a significant role in training law enforcement personnel and even became a member of the 1% Biker's Club, showcasing his commitment to the craft.

Life dealt Rick further challenges as he faced separation and the heart-wrenching disappearance of his oldest son for two years. Although his son was eventually found, his son's passing under suspicious circumstances cast a shadow of doubt and conspiracy theories.

Rick courageously confronted his struggles with alcohol addiction, triumphing over this formidable adversary. Today, Rick has transitioned into his full-time role at his gym, dedicating his energy to training others and serving as an inspiration, leader, and mentor. His journey is a testament to resilience, personal growth, and the unwavering pursuit of a better future.

  • Mr Lawrence Warry was a student from my early years as a young martial arts teacher. Specific individuals enter your school, and they immediately make a significant impact on everyone within your school, usually without even knowing the impact they’ve made. Lawrence Warry is one of those students who had a significant impact on my school because of his courtesy, humility, and willingness always to do what was asked of him. I loved when he was in class because he was one of those students that made me a better teacher.

It was an absolute pleasure to talk with him about the old days and where his martial arts journey has taken him.

I feel very blessed to have been part of his journey.

  • Master Mark Hutton is one of those people I love to chat with. He doesn't mince words and shoots straight from the hip; he is just the kind of person I like. Master Hutton is known throughout TKD circles as an inspirational character who practices what he preaches, which is another thing I like about him. I was pleased to catch up with him and chat about all things TKD and why returning to some of the old ways will be necessary. Chatting to him it is clear that he loves to help people and that is the sign of a true martial artist. if you ever get to speak with him, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. However, beware as he tells it like it is.

  • Rebecca Hanser is a director, writer, producer, and actress based in London for screen, stage, and mocap. She is known for the feature films Portal to the Abyss (2024), Parasitus (2021), Blade of the Assassin (2021) and the short films Third Life Crisis (2023), the award-winning Ghosted (2022) and A Tribute to Frida (2021).

At an early age, she already loved films and says she learned English by "simply watching a lot of movies". The acting bug only kicked in at a much later age as she developed a passion for writing. She pursued an impressive academic career before giving in to acting. She studied International Business Management at The Hague University (BSc) and Anthropology and Journalism (MA) at the renowned Leiden University. Surviving college through jobs in modelling and hospitality, she says that studying allowed her to travel the world. As a result, she speaks several languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, and French, as well as her native Dutch and English.

She started growing more interested in acting, and after several successful Dutch film projects like Poolshoogte (2014), she moved to London to train at the prestigious Drama Centre London to obtain her third master's degree in screen acting (MA). The classes mixed actor students with director students, giving her a taste of work behind the camera. She joined theatre company The People's Company as an in-house cast member during this period. She was featured in one of their biggest productions, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (2019), as fairy queen Titania in collaboration with the Southwark Playhouse. She performed on stage and toured the UK with the Extreme Improv Comedy Club, directed by David Pustansky. Around this time, she also became passionate about Flamenco dance, which led to the short documentary Andalusia (2018). The latest stage performance was for the show "Pigs" produced by SweinHaus and took place at the Cockpit Theatre in London.

  • Duncan Perry commenced his martial arts journeys in the 1970s. He’s very modest and a nice guy. Although I don't know him well, I suspect he's an excellent, caring teacher.

Like many of us who started back then, he gained inspiration from watching the kung fu series on TV.

He started Lau Gar Kung Fu with Sifu Frank Linch as a youngster in the brutal days of martial arts. His Karate journey began in Castleford, and he's been part of the Mushin Kai legacy built by Alfie Lewis. Mr Perry has participated in several martial arts disciplines but is still excited about what the arts can do for others. We chatted about his love for Disney and psychology. That seems like a strange combination, but it works for him.

He was warm, and I felt like I’d known him for years.

  • Mike Ilderton is a lovely gentleman who has practised several Japanese arts. He is the oldest martial artist with whom I have spoken.  He has a genuine love for the traditional side of his art, which reflects the time he has spent in practice and the era in which he started his journey.

Mike Sensei is an inspiration to all of us who love and practice martial arts. It’s great to speak with someone who has made it his way of life for so long.

  • It's great doing this podcast because I get to chat with many different kinds of people from all combat backgrounds. My guest on this one was a nice guy who was introduced to me through a mutual friend. I have to say, I enjoyed our conversation. Lee has had experience with several different martial arts. At one point in his journey, he turned to swimming and weight training to get his physical fix. Lee also has a real passion for nunchaku and has developed his system of combat nunchaku. Check out the link below to see more about his system.

If you want to get into nunchaku, you can't go far wrong with chatting with Lee; he's a nice and approachable guy.

  • I came across Team Tizick many years ago through a mutual friend. I found them very eager and keen to learn, and they also seemed passionate about passing Taekwon-Do on to others. They currently run and manage their dojang with classes that appeal to all ages. They are incredibly active in all areas of martial arts and, judging by their Facebook posts, are very busy supporting their students on the tournament circuit.

It was good to catch up with them and discuss their journey.

  • Danny Dowling is an unusual guest because he no longer does martial arts. However, he did pursue his journey from childhood to his older years. That journey saw him reach the highest levels of competition and eventually become part of the GB Taekwondo squad.  Danny talks about the reality of being a GB competitor who must keep performing to retain his funding. It’s very tough at the top, and Danny outlines precisely how tough it is. Although he no longer does martial arts, he puts that time and passion into pushing weights and becoming a great sparky.

I hope that Danny will one day restart his martial journey, as I believe he has so much to offer to the combative community.

I'm sure that Danny and I will talk again in the future.

  • The Dark Master catches up with his friend, Grandmaster Don Dalton, for another chat.

Under the Presidency of Grandmaster Master Don Dalton, the rise of ITF UNION has been meteoric. In over six years, the organisation has propelled itself into the forefront of the art with astounding growth made during that time. ITF UNION is now in more than 60 countries, with new members constantly joining.

GM Dalton began his training under the watchful eye of Master Patrick McCarthy in Tralee in the South West of Ireland. After Master McCarthy emigrated to teach in London in 1985, GM Dalton began training under the Irish Taekwon-Do Pioneer Grandmaster Norman Creedon in Cork City.

I love chatting with GM Dalton as he is the kind of person GMs should be. He is warm and friendly, and he loves music too.

  • First and foremost, Master David Sheppard is a lovely person. Like many martial arts teachers I know, he’s passionate about giving his students all the help and support they need and much more. He’s one of those guys who continually goes the extra mile.

I first saw Master Sheppard many years ago when he was a young lad making his way up the ranks as a competitor. At that time, he had a unique fighting style that I tried to copy without success. I can honestly say that Master David Sheppard was the first person I saw use a front-leg machine gun sidekick with such precision and accuracy that it blew my mind.  I believe his machine gun kick has been copied by many but equalled by none.  I talk about his famous sidekick and other things martial arts related.

It was lovely to catch up with him and confirm that he hasn’t changed and is still lovely.

  • Mr Tom Wynne Is a martial artist I admired back then. I liked his fighting style because he always made his fighting do the talking. Although our paths never crossed in the competition arena, I admired him as a skilled competitor. He could walk the walk as a technical fighter, but if you wanted to mix it up and get rough and tough, he was happy to oblige.

I got another chance to talk with Mr Tom Wynne, AKA 'the Bootman.'

This episode discusses the martial mindset and what it takes to develop a strong fighting spirit. Tom has competed at all levels and has had considerable success.

I'm grateful that Tom has given up his time to share his insights into the martial mindset.

  • Mark Payne - His journey of a thousand miles

Mark Payne is the first non-martial artist I've talked with on my podcast. However, that doesn't diminish his message in any way. His message is one that all of us must notice; it's the message of looking after your health. It's also the message that it's never too late to regain your health, to live and perform at a higher level.

Although Mark has not been a martial artist himself, he has been around martial arts people for many years. He's supported his son in his martial arts passion and continues to do so.

I have always found Mark easy to talk to, and he always greets me with a smile; I'm guessing he now has lots to smile about and be grateful for. After listening to his story, I'm sure you'll agree that even though he has never done martial arts before, his challenge has built him a level of indomitable spirit equal to any martial arts practitioner.

I wish Mark all the best for the future. I'm grateful to have him in my PUMA martial arts family.

I hope you enjoy our chat.

  • Master Alfie Lewis and the Martial Mindset

My second chat with the one and only Master Alfie Lewis. The founder and chief instructor of Mushin Kai freestyle.  We talk about developing a martial arts mindset.

I challenge anyone to find another person who is close to the level of passion that Master Alfie Lewis has for martial arts. Not just his love and knowledge of his art but his extensive knowledge of other martial arts too

Master Alfie Lewis now devotes his time to channelling his infectious personality into his students and their personal development. If you've never had the pleasure of seeing him fight, listen to his rapid-fire speech, and you'll get a flavour of what it was like to face him.

As I said in my last post, I’m sure you can feel the warmth and respect I have for him.

I hope you enjoy the second of my talks with Master Alfie Lewis.

Phil Whitlock and the Martial Mindset

I caught up with Mr Phil Whitlock to discuss the pros and cons of a martial arts mindset. Phil has competed in martial arts from a very young age. He competed at all levels and was known to have a powerful martial mindset. I coached and watched Phil at age 14 compete in the junior world championships in Argentina in 2002. It was a very intimidating atmosphere, and I feared he would not hold his nerve. How wrong I was. Even though he came up against a much physically stronger opponent, he gave a great showing and his mindset was tested to its limits. He passed that test with flying colours.

It was great chatting with him, and I hope you take some points from his wise words. I hope to have many more chats with him.

I hope you enjoy our chat.
