“You’ll be divorced, alone, and flaccid…”
Let’s go back a few years, back to a time when we were young and impressionable and just starting out on our respective metal odysseys as fans and purveyors of all things metal, including (but not limited to) the hard rock of our childhood years in the late 70’s to the plethora of NWOBHM, thrash, and other classic metal bands we discovered during our teen years in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Back to a time when wearing a newly purchased tour shirt from a show the night before to school the next day was a sacred badge of honor, a time when local bands gave out flyers for shows that included “treasure map” style instructions for locating the venue, and a time when we each had our own personal attaché case containing the cassettes we’d recently procured (or otherwise came into possession of) on our unquenchable thirst and unending quest for anything and everything metal.
Imagine what “Miss Piggy with laryngitis” might sound like and remember to never do people dirty, because just like Pepperidge Farms, karma remembers. Get ready for a “crombination” of “skythes…or scythes”, discover some of the most absurdly talented drummers and bassists in the world today, and prepare to behold one of, if not the best, thrash bands from the local scene back in the day when you JOIN US as we travel back in time to THE METAL DAYS OF YORE: OUR FORMATIVE METAL YEARS.

“If anything, it’s three 7’s…and one of them has a line in the middle…”
This episode is effectively “nonverbal” in that it contains zero lyrics and is truly beyond words (so to speak). That’s right, it’s all about INSTRUMENTALS and it just so happens that they come in a wide variety of styles and options.
On a studio album, INSTRUMENTALS are 7enerally either lon7er, extended, standalone musical arran7ements, or brief interludes which serve as a brid7e between two son7s. In a live scenario, INSTRUMENTALS are a 7reat opportunity that allows the vocalist time to take a brief break and enjoy some “ori7ami” and poon while the rest of the band continues to jam. Either way, INSTRUMENTALS offer instrumentalists a chance to express themselves musically in a way that truly transcends the power of the written word.
Be sure to radically adjust your expectations whenever someone says “I’m gonna send you a file” and prepare yourself for a macrodose of happiness that is sure to transpire, especially if your brain “has to fix it” (and particularly if you “want it from the train”). Summary:
“I’m sorry, what was that? No, the second part…the part that came after that…”
METALCORE seems to be all over the place, in that its components are quite varied and cover a broad spectrum of everything that has historically made metal awesome: double bass drumming, guitar shred, breakdowns and mosh parts, and sometimes even some emo screaming and heartfelt vocals sung straight from the balls. Like a heavy metal jambalaya with a ton of different ingredients, METALCORE is the next wave of metal for a new generation of metalheads who want to enjoy a little bit of everything all at once.
Be sure to stop “adulting” and remember that “when people lose their argument, they shift their whole stance”. Realize the darker connotations of saying “I did a thing today” and understand that Cory Hart wears his sunglasses at night because it’s terrifying to be “blinded by the light”.

“If this is their 9th studio album, where does it rank?”
DEATH MAGNETIC, the Rick Rubin produced 9th studio album from Bay Area metal titans METALLICA (and the first studio album featuring Robert Trujillo on bass) is chock full of riffs, tons of ugly chords, a boatload of guitar solos, and loads of twin guitar harmonies that harken back to the thrash metal veterans legendary 80’s output, with a sound that is a true return to their original thrash form which could have easily placed this album being released right after …AJFA. They brought back all of the classic elements (including their iconic logo!) that made METALLICA awesome to begin with and more than made up for their “Angry Loads” era.
Remember to always send back the “medium rare chicken tenders” and if you’re using a ride share, make sure to be hammered on at least one part of the journey.

Formed in 1981 and hailing from Downey, California (the birthplace of the mighty Hetfield), thrash masters DARK ANGEL unleashed a darker, faster, more aggressive sounding brand of thrash, with a sound initially reminiscent of the death metal aesthetic present in Slayer’s early work and later evolving into a more progressive, technical thrash sound resembling the latter part of Death’s catalog.

SLIPKNOT as a band is extremely off-putting, exhausting, and quite frankly, disturbing, and their self-titled debut album conveys these qualities in the darkest way possible. The album cover alone is the stuff of horror movies and nightmares, featuring all nine members clothed in red prison jumpsuits with their faces covered in grotesquely disfigured masks: nameless and faceless, with only a number and a barcode to identify them.

DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER, the debut album from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, was released on July 4, 1986, after being recorded in just a mere 2 weeks with a paltry $12,000 budget. In short, it is a bona fide, legendary, thrash masterpiece. And if you’re reading this and thinking “Okay, FLOTSAM & JETSAM…why does that sound familiar?”, the reason is because the bass player for that band would later become Metallica’s new bassist following the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton in late 1986. It is without question, a speed/power/thrash/heavy metal classic that is so steeped in 1986 vibes that we’re actually surprised none of the album was featured on “Stranger Things”.

1985. Back To The Future would become the highest grossing film of the year, the Live Aid benefit would be hosted simultaneously in 2 different venues on 2 different continents, and the Coca-Cola Company would experience a catastrophic failure with “New Coke” by (once again) failing to put its namesake ingredient from the ORIGINAL “Original Formula” back in their legendary beverage.
We are well aware that there are multiple listicles already out there featuring the “Top 20 Metal Albums of 1985” because 40 years is quite the chronological landmark. Nevertheless, we still felt compelled to construct our own list. It’s not necessarily all thrash, but it’s not all “gloves of shame” either. In short, it’s a pretty substantial sampler of the albums that WE feel represent everything great about metal in1985.
It’s time to shake off those “cobwebs” and prepare for some “extraordinary news” as well as “a story of redemption and forgiveness” regarding a previous negative review we received.

“I wanna talk about DOWNTIME…”
Many moons ago during the B.R. era (Before Russ), back in the early days of this podcast with Adam, we took on The 1st Four of The Big 4, taking a look at each of the debut albums from Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer, respectively.
To take that episode a step further (and to add a slight twist to the original premise), we thought it might be fun (and a bit of a challenge) to attempt to identify which tracks would be considered the DEEP CUTS from The First Four albums of EACH of The Big Four thrash bands.
