Dr. Steve wants to make sure Alex isn't "forcing" his feelings for the sake of this podcast. Alex has been beating himself up a lot lately and it's something he struggles to keep at bay. Also, did one of Alex's therapists quit on him?

Alex is very curious about something Dr. Steve mentioned - the "standard deviations" of therapy. Basically, who gets to decide what is "normal" or "abnormal" in therapy? How does that affect patients like Alex? They then go back to some wedding talk, as well as some learnings from Alex's EMDR.

(sorry about the glitch, we fixed it!) Alex is about to get married to his lovely fiancée Haley, but some sad things are happening along the way. Relationships are blossoming and some are dying. Literally. Who's a friend and who's not? And how do we handle the death of someone we didn't necessarily get along with? These questions and more.

Alex is flying solo this episode - why? Because he's made a startling revelation. He's been seeing FOUR different therapists lately. Is that too much? He reflects on what it's taught him about Therapy.

Alex is thinking about his future and thinking about the future of this podcast. Dr. Steve suggests a very interesting theory - a therapy hiatus. This is a new concept to Alex, but one that very well might catch on...

As long as there have been humans there have been sons who need to hash things out with their dad. Alex is no different, and Dr. Steve thinks Alex might be stalling instead of getting on with it. Easy for you to say, Dr. Steve!!!

Alex had his first EMDR session and it was intense. He walks Dr. Steve through it and they discuss some of the shame Alex feels for being an anxious person. A lot of deep origin work. Dr. Steve shares a poignant quote - "we are as sick as our secrets." It kind of begs the question - why do we hide the things that cause us to feel pain?

Alex comes back from his semi-annual road trip feeling a bit critical of the way that he sounds on this podcast. Listening to yourself will do that. It doesn't help that Alex has had 4 therapy sessions in one week. So he recounts all of that and what it's taught him about his propensity to analyze things.

A few weeks ago Alex learned that Dr. Steve is a Mormon. Alex is not particularly religious (and watched South Park growing up), so he feels a bit weird having a therapist who is religious. In this episode, Alex talks about wanting to more about Dr. Steve's religion and how it influences him. Dr. Steve asks "why is it important for you to know?" And thus, the session unfolds.

Alex has (good) updates for Dr. Steve and things are starting to feel a bit like normal. A recent EMDR session has Alex thinking about what the source of his stress might be/have been. Finally, a question for Dr. Steve leads to a bit of a cliffhanger.

We pick up right where we left off last week. Alex digs his heels in about why this podcast is helpful for him (and not a source of stress.) Dr. Steve listens and poses an interesting question - does stimulus play a role in Alex's stress? Could the source of his stress also be a byproduct of what he loves doing? Classic heady stuff from Dr. Steve.

From mysterious chronic pain, to a ton of work, Alex is dealing things that are causing him to feel stressed out. So much so that even Dr. Steve knew something was wrong. They discuss it, and it leads to Dr. Steve asking the age-old question - "should you be doing this podcast right now?" Sorry Dr. Steve, you're not getting off the hook that easy!!

In this episode of My Therapist and I, Alex finally musters up the courage to ask Dr. Steve a question he's been meaning to ask. It leads to an interesting discussion on the patient-therapist relationship, what it means to be open and honest, and finally why Alex harbors some fear surrounding asking therapists questions.

Alex and Dr. Steve take some time to review the last 30 sessions together. Alex shares what he's learned through their work together, as well as his ideas for the future of the podcast. It leads to them discussion a subject that Alex finds particularly challenging: acceptance vs. mastery. BUT he's optimistic that the acceptance will come with time.
