  • In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak talks to Curt Covington, Senior Director of Managed Accounts at AgAmerica, who shares his extensive insights into the state of American agriculture. With over four decades of experience in agricultural banking and a rich background in teaching ag finance, Covington provided a comprehensive overview of the industry's current landscape and future challenges.

Covington's journey began in California's Central Valley, where his family farmed nut crops, vineyards, and cotton. He transitioned to agricultural banking in 1979, influenced by his father's advice on the critical role of bankers and landlords in farming. His career saw him hold significant positions at Rabobank, Bank of the West, and Farmer Mac. Currently, at AgAmerica, he leads the Client Success Group, helping clients achieve greater success through strategic lending and expertise.

Covington discusses the implications of the recently released State of American Agriculture report. One of the critical points was the decline in the number of U.S. farms, now below 2 million for the first time. This decline is not just a statistical concern but a pressing issue affecting the backbone of rural America. The reduction in family farms impacts funding for essential services like hospitals, schools, and emergency services in rural communities.

Several factors contribute to the 14% decline in U.S. farms and the 8% reduction in farmland since 1997. Urban encroachment and the graying of rural America play significant roles. Many farmers, with an average age between 58 and 64, lack successors to take over their operations. The high cost of farming, including soaring input costs and land prices, further exacerbates the issue.

Despite the decrease in the number of farms, the average farm size has increased by 7% since 2002. This trend towards larger farms brings both benefits and challenges. Larger operations can achieve greater efficiency, leveraging advanced technology and equipment to reduce costs. However, smaller farms struggle to keep up, especially given that farmers do not set commodity prices, leading to unpredictable profitability.

Succession planning remains a significant challenge for multi-generational farms. Only 23% of family farms have a succession plan in place. Covington highlighted the importance of strategic planning and decision-making in ensuring the continuity of farming operations. The reluctance of older generations to hand over control and the complexities of family dynamics often hinder effective succession planning.

Curt Covington's insight sheds light on the pressing issues facing American agriculture. He underscores the need for strategic planning, efficient resource management, and support for family farms to sustain the backbone of rural America.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the evaluation of a new Orondis premix formulation, applied in transplant water for black shank control and phytotoxicity.

Throughout the growing season, farmers must manage pests and diseases, which can significantly impact yield and quality. Regular monitoring and the use of recommended agricultural practices help mitigate these risks. As the plants mature, the leaves are harvested in stages, starting from the bottom and moving upwards.

The tobacco growing industry in the Southeast continues to thrive, thanks to the dedication and expertise of professionals like Dr. J Michael Moore. Through educational programs, research, and community initiatives, the industry is not only preserving its rich heritage but also embracing innovation to meet the challenges of modern agriculture. As farmers adopt new practices and technologies, the future of flue-cured tobacco in the region looks promising.

  • This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology.

From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.

  • Today, we are joined by Amanda Freund, a third-generation farmer from East Canaan, Connecticut. Together with her father, Matt, Amanda manages their company called CowPots, where the family manufactures biodegradable containers using the dairy farm’s digested and composted manure.

Amanda's connection to compost goes back to her 8th-grade science fair project, where she compared different carbon sources in compost piles. She also served as an agriculture volunteer with the Peace Corps in Zambia from 2010-2012, where she trained farmers on building and maintaining compost piles. Today, she oversees production schedules, marketing, and distribution of their value-added compost products nationwide.

CowPots uses pulp molding equipment to manufacture biodegradable, plantable containers from digested and composted cow manure. Currently offering 15 styles ranging in size from 3" to 17", CowPots began as a way for the family to manage their nutrients better and has grown into a profitable business that provides growers and gardeners with an American-made, renewable, and recycled alternative to plastic and peat pots.

Apart from CowPots, Amanda maintains the website and social media for another farm business, Freund's Farm Market and Bakery. In her free time, she enjoys dabbling in beekeeping and walking the crop fields with her dog, Brie.

Join us as we dive into Amanda's journey and how CowPots is revolutionizing the industry!
